Adults seem like they couldn't give a damn about teenage development though. I mean if it was really for the next generation, I think it is worth it to change the whole new education system for teenagers. Sadly, that doesn't seem like so
It isn't that we don't care. It's just that we've all gone through it too and the human brain makes problems you already dealt with seem much smaller in retrospect. There's something about being on the other side and knowing the kids will get through it and generally be OK that makes you forget how it felt at the time. All the problems were new, it was (hopefully) the first time you were having to bear responsibilities and hardships, and you had nothing to compare it with so it felt like the worst thing you'd ever gone through. It was! I still think it's a bad idea to ask teenagers to make big life decisions but that doesn't have the same impact to me now either. I failed my exams, didn't go to university, and have a successful career in the sciences. And when you've gone through bullying, abuse, mental health issues, and so on, and you've got through it, survived, and now you're fine, you do tend to feel that other people will also be fine one day. But it does, unfortunately, make you easily forget that right now they're not. It's too easy to make that oversight and not everyone is self-aware enough, or has gone through situations bad enough, to catch themselves doing it. In essence I think the reason there hasn't been a big overhaul in the education system is a combination of two factors. First: pupils currently at school would have a massive upheaval in the way they're taught. If it doesn't work out, that's potentially an entire generation whose education was interrupted for nothing. Second: by and large we all got through the current system ourselves, so we're inclined not to feel strongly about changing it any more. It's that problems-in-retrospect principle at work again, we turned out OK so it's hard now to feel that it's too broken or unfair. I'm only talking with experience in the English school system of course. I know other countries have pretty different and/or less standardised education systems so it may well be much more dysfunctional or more of a postcode lottery than it is here.
@@e.s.r5809 As mentioned in the video, sleep is when growth occurs. A person who is 5'8 (to simplify the science for the sake of example) never knows that s/he could have been 6'2 with perfect circumstances. Likewise, there is no guarantee that those survived aren't worse for not having the right sleep schedule, or other elements. You mentioned failing your exams, and still having a successful career. For everyone who was successful, there is more that weren't successful. While having a degree isn't a guarantee of anything, it increases the odds for that aforementioned successful career. Even though Bill Gates dropped out of college, most college dropouts are less successful that their non-dropout peers. Likewise, while you were successful regardless of your failing exams, that doesn't mean that that is the best odds to take. Likewise, survival doesn't always mean optimal operation. Yeah, we survived the education system, but does that mean that we are doing as well as we could be? Perhaps changing the system could create circumstances that maximize the net benefit. While a higher grade in high school doesn't guarantee anything, that can have ripple effects throughout the rest of one's life.
Yes!! Schools should also incorporate learning that is appropriate for their age and development. For example kinder, should focus on developing social, emotional, and cognitive development; rather than giving them a desk with a pencil. Teachers ask why can’t they sit still? Because they need to active and actively involved with play based learning. Maybe if schools focused on emotions then they can learn new ways to deal with life events.
@Ted Hubert Pagnanawon Crusio That's a good way of putting it. Teens, myself included then, do some measure of stupid stuff but with a brazen boldness.
@@MissBunny850 They were teenagers but went through things we didn't because they aren't in the same generations as us and they forgot they were there because they either forgot or they aren't thinking about it because of how busy or stressed they are especially in a society like this now
School: Sleep is very important for your brain School: Here have four hours of homework School: And wake up at 6 AM School: You're in huge trouble if you're late School: or if you don't finish your homework School: Sleep is very important for your brain
When I was a teenager we had a 9 p.m. no sound whatsoever rule in my house, except for dad and his television set. He would fall asleep watching the news and I would be in my bedroom until midnight or maybe 1am just laying there barely hearing the TV, but I couldn't sleep. I think teenagers, now, are not necessarily distracted and kept awake by technology, but being entertained and learning instead of just laying there staring at a dark ceiling. Teenage life (2018) is far better than what we had.
Mine was a more military "lights out" which if I were to use a desk lamp and a towel/blanket to block the bottom door gap. I hated it because I felt like my dad was a hypocrite who didn't lead by example. I was aware that he would oftentimes wake up to watch HBO or Cinemax with a snack.
Mine was lights out, no sound, in bed, etc. I became very good at moving around the house silently and in the dark. Or left the house entirely. Not that I necessarily recommend that. But I wasn't going to be sleeping anyway. Might as well go outside and watch the stars.
I get that you "had it worse" but the whole point of this video is for parents to understand how teenagers work, You probably have Truama from that but you don't want to do that to your kids? Awesome.
Yep. I've had people "inform" me that if I just stopped spending all day on my phone I would fall asleep when I go to bed no problem. Yeah, except that I didn't get a phone till I was 17 and have struggled to fall asleep in under a couple hours for as long as I can remember. Sadly even my parents say this, because apparently I didn't have sleep issues as a kid. You know, aside from being impossible to wake up in the morning because I'd only fallen asleep 4 hours before.
Science: We should push start times at highschools back so that students can focus more in school. School: Well, science, we get that you're important and all, but that seems like work, and we'd rather just ignore you and complain about the problem rather than actually fixing it. Science: But wouldn't this benefit teachers and staff too? I'm sure they don't want to wake up at 6am every morning. School: well yeah but these kids are fine. they wake up this early so they can learn about how important you are to the growth and development of society! Science: So how important am I to the growth of a civilization if I'm just completely ignored. School: *lectures random teen who isn't paying attention in class on how science is important* Seriously though, I love how they teach ways that they could repair their own system, and then they just flat out ignore it because tradition.
Bruh my high school usually starts at 8:45 right but last year on Tuesdays we would start at 9:15 which was cool right everyone would go and buy munchies in the morning. But this year on Tuesdays school finishes at 2:45, 25 minutes early. The schools of New Zealand are different to over there in USA.
I have teenage feelings and I am enjoying it a lot because I really like girls. Unfortunately it makes it hard for me to talk to them. I seem to always answer them with short answers because I do not want to say something stupid.
I wish school started later then I could be way more focused during the day. I hate waking up at 6 am and sometimes earlier just to go to something I hate. They should at least cut us some slack.
Hope Loves TH-cam Fact: The school timing system was and is still used from waaaaaayy back when education was a must. Kids wake up early coz thats the time they normally wake up (people way back wake up real early, especially farmer kids) den finish school at 2 PM to do help do some field/farm work. Please correct me if I'm wrong in any part!
Making people of any age wake up at times that they aren't comfortable with and then adding insult to injury by calling them lazy is inexcusable. Night owls unite!
How do I thumbs this up a million times without making a million accounts? BTW I don't think many adults watch these videos, in fact the majorities are teens and young adults. So this should be on nation news lol just to prove our point across to our parents.
you know when you decide to go to bed early and then you're awake for another 3 hours wondering if its the chemicals keeping you up or just your subconscious being rebellious when you really just want to sleep?
How about we get the U.S. government to update the school system 'cause otherwise nothing will change and we will stay with this abhorrent issue until Yellowstone destroys everything in the country
Funny how there's a whole scientific explanation to why teenagers are mostly dumb, tired and emotionally conflicted and yet adults don't even try to help or at least understand it, even tho they already experienced that and know how it feels.
That seems very strange to me, too. And I'm an adult. I feel very sympathetic because I know what it's like. I don't understand why other adults aren't that way.
+Rocko Pistachio I know, right? I think John Green summarizes it best. "Shut up and stop condescending to teenagers." My world history teacher insists on treating us like we're five, and yet we're still expected to be fully awake and prepared to work at 7:20 AM like adults. Treat us like we're five, we'll act like we're five. Treat us like adults, and we'll act like we're adults.
+Jack Conant 25: the photo is definitely a stock photo, so it's not really supposed to show real emotion and even though it's trying to be "well said". I'd say she could be used for showing shock, surprise, fear, stress. Not anger. Stock photos are often made to be more universal. You pay for one license and you can use it in a few different places to prove different points. Using image with fake emotion like THIS in a scientific research.....? Not valid. But I still think the point about misrepresenting emotions with teens is right anyway. I've been there.
+Steven Glikin it depends when big rat is on the floor then yes hands on head. it is a human thought process of where they want their feet to be during the first few seconds of that exposure. #human psychology in fear graduate! :)
All adults need to be reminded of this every day. School times must change for tweens, teens and kids. School times must allow parents to work without causing job loss, and it does cause job loss. Healthcare must also become a basic human right for this reason, it affects teachers, parents, students and society at large..
i can't agree enough with your statement that healthcare should be a basic human right. i have so many things i need to go to my doctor and probably specialists about, but i can't afford it. it ought to be a basic human right, no matter someone's socioeconomic standing.
This is nuts...we should consider changing things, but at the same time, most manage to sort themselves out eventually. Still the timing could be better.
I really get anxious whenever the subject “what is your dream job?” comes up. Like, I still havent fully decided why are you asking me that question? Why cant you just give me more time to decide? This is a life changing choice and youre just telling me to pick a profession? It may be easy for you to pick, but i actually put more thought into what I want to do. What if the job isnt right for me and i feel upset all the time? What if it keeps me from doing what I love?
They need to stop school. Like literally what is the point? you literally learn nothing useful except basic maths and writing at a young age. which ok that's useful but after 3 years just stop let the kids have a break for 14 years and then bring on back the hard graft at o and a level
I find a large degree of disillusionment with teens, especially in the United States. For one thing, children's entertainment is unusually childish while adult entertainment is unusually violent. There doesn't exist a proper bridge for teens to follow, so many of them start doing adult things a lot younger than they really should. They grow up being innocent children, and then suddenly they are forced into an adult world. Then there are other factors: alcohol is completely prohibited until 21, and it is spoken of so frequently in anti-drug classes, which is absurd, so teens wonder why alcohol is so bad and they suddenly go crazy with it. If they were introduced to small amounts of alcohol, perhaps some wine at home, it would satisfy their curiosity without harming themselves or society at large. Then the education can be accepted at face value. Teens tend not to trust adults during this time for obvious reasons. There is also a lack of respect for the development process in the United States regarding schooling and education. Students grow up with recess and are slowly stripped of that, then are not allowed to make their own choices. Students who are not good at math will be forced to take math classes and graded by their performance, with the added stress of knowing their SAT scores will directly influence how "successful" they will be in life. These stresses coupled with raising difficulty but not maneuverability and unfair limitations as well as a general lack of representation in guiding their education makes teens compelled to speak and act out. Teens should be allowed to let their minds develop and experience the world in a safe and acceptable manner without harming themselves or anyone around them, but sadly the United States is content with trying to restrain them as much as possible, as though they are wild, vicious creatures. Every single adult was a teenager at one point in their life, but they keep calling teenagers stupid. Maybe everyone's stupid, but there are a combination of cultural factors and biological ones too that should be considered before making that judgement.
Propertyofbishco You're welcome. I only wish the development of children into teens and teens into adults could be better respected than it is. It's ironic that we currently have an obsession with youth culture and at the same time go out of our way to make development in life as difficult as possible for them.
Haha, yes! I have found this to be true as a teenager. With 4 brothers, I am the quiet, ignored girl. I study 24/7 and I want to eventually make it into Eckerd College, and all my teachers treat me like I'm stupid. And I am so respectful! I always have my hands behind my back, I only say "Yes Sir" or "Yes ma'am," and they look at me like I grew an extra head or something. Oh and my Granny hates me now, she thinks teenagers are stupid. Ugh, anyway, I'm glad I got to read your comment. :-)
Roxanne Burke I hope you are able to study something you find an interest in and achieve a job in that field afterwards. Right now, I would seriously recommend researching what fields have the best outlook and try to explore all your feasible options. It's kind of difficult to do that without knowing what exactly those different fields entail, so branch out, ask questions, and hopefully you can get your answers. Also, I don't want to say stop being disrespectful, but you should definitely have enough dignity for yourself to speak up. Contrary to the way it's handled in most cultures, respect is not something you simply build up with age: you were alive from the day you were born and capable of thought long before you could speak. Your opinion matters, it can improve the way we all live, and for that you are to be respected just as any other person should. I learned all this the hard way. I found out that older people will indeed lie and belittle my talents in order to falsely justify their position over me or control my life. My decisions to remain silent and accept that abuse did not help me to be where I deserve to be. To these people you need to stand up for yourself, otherwise they will continue belittling you and others. After feeling lost and neglected for a year, I finally found a safe environment to work in with people who care about me, and of course I do indeed care about them. I could've been a store manager or continuing my education at Ringling College had I chosen to speak up, but instead, I wound up being a cashier working at Publix. I never thought it would happen, but my life is improving so dramatically just by changing the people around me. If you didn't know, Publix was founded by a man who became a manager at 17 and decided he could build a better company at 25. Right now I'm 22 years old, so who knows what the next three years could bring? Or even the next day? Call it destiny or coincidence, but I'm glad it happened this way. It was an important lesson to learn. Don't be too modest: experience the world, be grateful for your opportunities, take life as it comes, and if it's not your fault, don't apologize for it. It's the least you can do, Roxanne, for what you have to give back. After all, nobody in the world knows what you're truly capable of right now. Today, you're "just" a teenager, but tomorrow, you can be a heroine.
I barely get any sleep and I’m like half grown lmao. What I mean by that is my arms are super long but I’m only 5’2 I know thi because I do archery and I have a 27’’ draw length which is typical for someone 5’6” so my arms are super long compared to my body
"teens stay up to 1 am" the fuck dude i can't even stay up to like 10 PM, i get really sleepy am I supposed to stay until 1 am to show off my super puberty skills?
You are not an adult. You are not forced to work without seeing a friend. You are not forced to worry about if you can or cannot get that one thing you want. You are not worried that you may be sacked. Damn I miss my teens.
Yes but you're life is uncertain. What seems to be small silly choices to you are big for a teenager; should I study chemistry or biology. A 5 second choice like that could change their op/ SAT scores, college courses, careers and of course their whole lives. You don't even know if your work is paying off, you might not get the op or sat (depending where you live) you wanted. You may not get into the college you've saved up for. You might never get your dream job from when you were a child. Basically what I'm saying is you're going to school and working hard and you don't even know what for or how/ if it's going to benefit you in the future. Plus juggle that will all the friendship, fitting in, bf/ gf and hormones drama. It's quite a difficult experience and if you don't acknowledge that then you're experiences don't have a right to be acknowledged either.
Same. My future was always in my sight. Never cared about the emotions, cause all I saw was happiness in my future. And now I can say that I am happy now, with room for improvement
I'm going through the same thing. When I was younger I vowed that I would never change like my sisters did, but I'm such a different person now. I'm glad I'm changing too, because I love the person I'm becoming.
Take advantage of being a teen, grow and improve yourself while it's the easiest. Work on forming good habits, this is your one chance in life where you can define your future.
Tyler Wardle "Fake word" Looks like someone isn't in tune with the wonders of the English language; where everything is a word and the points don't matter.
Couldn't agree more. Right now, nobody can say exactly how much of the teenage situation is due to biology, and how much is due to the absurd environment they're forced to live in. The average adult deals with bills, careers, and other life altering decisions. Teenagers are not allowed to make these decisions for themselves, so the biggest factor in their life is... the acceptance of the peers at school.
Teens aren't a cultural group. It's only an age range that every adult has gone experienced. Societies' view of teenagers is formed by an understanding of teenagers through personal experience of being a member of that group. There can be no developed stigma, because all adults are former teens. To have a stigma against teens, we would have to have a stigma against our view of ourselves.
They probably want to believe it will be over soon, but it makes the teen feel like they're actions are insignificant in the long run, and it doesn't matter what they do.
I watched this as a teen and sent it to my parents as I am the oldest child with mental illness. I'm watching it back for the first time as a married woman and reflecting on how different I am
"Teens don't get tired until late," Me: YES!! NOW I HAVE SCIENCE TO BACK ME UP WHEN I PLAY SKYRIM UNTIL 2am!! "But playing Call of Duty doesn't help." NOOO!!
I have 7 classes, 45 mins of hw minimum each night for each class, teachers want me to study each subject 30 mins each, and get at least 8 hrs of sleep. Shit doesnt add up
Sorry for necroposting, but it does. 24 hours in a day 0.75 * 7 hours: 45 minutes of homework for each class 0.50 * 7 hours: 30 minutes of studying for each class 1 * 7 hours: 1 hour long classes, 7 hours at school daily 24-(0.75 * 7) - (0.50 * 7) - (1 * 7) = 8.25 hours left. Math is math.
6:24 I thought the expression was happiness... yeah I don't what went on in my brain at that moment. I'm just going to blame the girl's horrible acting :)
Sara Huang That’s actually NOT one of the images used in the study. Additionally, participants were presented in several images depicting the same “message” and the responses were compared to establish validity. The point is, teens often do misread the facial expressions of others, and are using their Limbic system to do so which results in a primarily emotional response.
This actually explains so much. Including why you always find teenagers in youtube comments responding something entirely different from the video itself, it's not their fault, they just interpreted the message wrong.
As a veteran of my own and my children's adolescent phases, I've always assumed a scientific explanation of those mysterious events was still decades away. But you've done it, and in my lifetime. Thank you.

Great, just great. The most important time for learning in our lives, meanwhile every single day we're forced to wake up way too early to "learn" about things that we're not genuinely, voluntarily interested in save for the fact that it helps us "pass" and get a "job". I knew something was wrong, I feel it every day. I'm losing my intelligence slowly, and it's because we go to school to spend the most vital years of our brain development on things we have no interest in, to go home and be expected to continue the process with homework, and constant never ending assignments. What should be on your mind all the time? School, school, school. This is the path that others have laid out for you, and you need to follow it. I'm not applying my mind because I'm not fucking interested, but that's not my choice, is it? They're gonna tell me what I'm interested in, and in the process I'm being shown no choice but to lose all will to be interested in anything anymore except for immediate reward and gain processes to make up for the lack of meaning in the life that has been predetermined for me. But I'm the asshole, I'm the idiot. By the time I get out of this fucking institution I'll be like everybody else, won't I? Fuck that.
No, you'll know better. And become more powerful than you can possibly imagine! But seriously though, I'm only 26 so I can only speak with marginal authority but this feeling you're having? It's not gunna go away, at least not for many years if not ever. I spend my days at work thinking the exact same thing "my brain is wasting away". But it's not, not really. It's just adapting, you have to learn all that crap in school so you can see what sticks. You may not have a choice, but you can use it wisely. My advice (not that you asked for it but here goes); do your sentence, pass the tests, ace the papers, spend the next 5-10 years just seeing what you like. Then disregard the excess and start over as an adult. You'll still be bored and frustrated as you get older for whole new reasons but all that baggage of youth slowly falls away and is replaced by shit you DO care about (having a family, changing the world around you for the better, falling in love etc.). Nothing ever changes as you get older, you just get better at it.
Dead Parade, thank you for taking the time to think out your comment before submitting it, and on top of that you were constructive and positive, it's really appreciated and respected. I'm saying it's a shame that we have to waste our valuable time on "our sentences" and that people are able to tell me what's good for me without any option. Also for people with weaker minds than our own will be seriously affected by this, and whether or not I'm able to endure my sentence unscathed is irrelevant to them coming out of it with a warped, unnatural mind. It's also a shame that this time needs to be wasted enduring instead of rising to our full potentials by our own means on our own terms. Thanks :)
So I'm 16 and the whole "use it or loose it," thing really stresses me out. Like, I feel like if I don't learn everything at once I'll never be able to learn it. (Which of course isn't true but Ahhh! emotional teenager-y brain!) Then I get stressed because there is no possible way for me to learn everything at once but I can't figure out a logical, productive way to learn a whole lot oof interesting stuff at once.
@@aletanook or they have to force themselves to control their actions because the consequences of not doing so are worse. I was a very well behaved child, like too well behaved for my age. Because I knew if I acted my age I'd get a lecture at home. And by "lecture" I mean screaming.
Teenagers need 9 hours of sleep and usually produce melatonin, which makes them sleep, at 11 pm. So here is the school grading for the school for their start times: 10:00 - A 9:00 - B 8:00 - C 7:00 - D 6:00 - F
"Awkward years" or not, I still haven't forgiven the parent I knew who told their suicidal teen that they just needed to, quote, "grow into themselves" and stop "being selfish", "being a victim", and "overreacting". The kid nearly overdosed on pills one night. Stop being a victim? Are you freaking kidding me?! No. Just no. There are times when it's the teen, but there are times when the adult is the problem. Some adults need to stop crying hormones and look in the mirror. I've seen this scenario play out again and again. It sickens me every single time.
Yeah, I hate how parents, aka former teenagers, act like this. It seems like most parents forgot what it's like to be teenagers, and act almost exactly like the adults that they probably hated during their own teenage years. A vicious cycle.
I’m such an immature 17 year old. When he said Pituitary Gland, all I thought of was “this is the pituitary gland, he may be small but he has biiiig plans” “goodbye childhood....” from Gravity Falls
I wish I knew that decades ago too. Teens should be taught these things. It's incredibly important to understand why they have the reactions they have and puts it into perspective.
+Dulana Gunasena I'm gonna take a wild guess and say you live in the US. Right? Up until I was 16-17 I had never heard of parents or people like this lol. Guess it's just a Murica thing.
My almost 15 yr old daughter does drive me nuts w/all the seemingly over-reactions to stuff. I've gotten so tired of ppl saying "well, she IS a teenager". It's always sounded obnoxious & like a lame excuse. BUT, thankfully this video explained all of that & actually confirmed that it IS because she's a teenager! It looks like I need to adjust my reactions towards her. Thanks Sci Show for helping me understand my kid & these teenage yrs :)
So. How come teens throughout history were able to handle adult responsibilities and were essentially treated like adults, but now all the sudden teens are mentally incapable of doing such things? Don't you think that society could have a huge impact on the way our brains work? Teens have been told for years to keep silent because they cannot have opinions on certain matters because they don't have the life experience. Wouldn't it make sense that, in time, more people started to care less during that period of time in their lives? What if we treated teens like adults and gave them that kind of respect? It also seems like technology is really destroying our minds, while of course being extremely helpful to us. What do we do?!
throughout history humans on average had a shorter life span so taking responsibility earlier was expected, you couldn't act like a child at 16 if you would live to 33
+eli heerter I understand, but don't you think we'd have a much better youth if we expected the same from them and treated them like adults with respect and dignity? A shorter life span isn't an excuse for people wasting a good quarter of their entire lives. Much of the decisions we make at 12-18 determine who we will become later on in life and what we will be doing. We have been very effective in turning what should be men into boys, and then we expect them to change so suddenly rather than treating them as adults when they begin to think independently.
Not to mention the teenage years are when you learn all about the world, but youre not yet as jaded as adults are, so you're more willing to go out and help people, and try to make things better, before inevitably realizing your insignificance and succumbing to the pressures of society and become a carbon copy of everyone else.
@@albertjackinson ya know, its been 4 years and im not 17 anymore, but i still stand by it, aging in a world that was built to break you down into submission to larger forces via distraction on the micro scale is really awful and its hard to keep caring when there is nothing that can be done to help the state of a world so far gone
@@1ClownFreakTown And that is something I disagree with. Right now, at least in the US, there's quite a bit of movement on important areas in society. I would say, at least for myself, that legitimizes my argument things *can* change. Or maybe I also see society differently because I'm an optimistic about things. It's probably both.

Lorissa Labudde Unless you're living in Japan, I highly doubt Japanese is more useful than being able to watch anime without captions. Spanish, German and English seem to be the trade languages and are the reason why they're promoted in schooling. I think German deserves a little more love though.
Lorissa Labudde Your "I think anyone who wants to live in the us should learn English!!" is invalid. At some point in your families history, your relatives emigrated to the US. Chances are, unless your English, that your ancestors did not speak English. Once you are in an English speaking country, you will start to pick up the language, therefore learning the language.
Pikachu Labudde Societal and lingual immersion _is_ still a modern, effective, and *present* method of learning a language. Also, just because we have the technology doesn't make it _cheap._ Many people who emigrate to the United States do so with money being a goal in mind, meaning they need it and probably can't use it on $700 software, or a computer. By the way, I can see that despite the technology we have at our use now, you're still not done learning English yet.
YES! This episode made me feel awesome that I started a musical instrument when I was a teenager, I basically can't increase in skill anymore but I pushed myself to a certain level of skill while I still had the chance to do that, just in time for adulthood.
One of the most frustrating feelings is being unjustly discredited for being "a teenager". I can have an argument against me mum in which I am totally correct. I can have science, morality, reasons, but no matter what, if my mom is already mad, she'll just boil it down to "being moody".
Nuggetzor Quote quote " against me mum in which I am totally correct." Totally correct? Are you so sure about it? Have you ever thought about your mom's intentions behind her choices? If she is indeed mad as what you say, do you respond back in the same manner? You know that emotions can cloud your thoughts; and your mom, in the heat of things, can and will spew some stuff that she will never ever mean when she is calm and collected. Have you tried waiting it out for her to actually calm down and having both parties talk to each other in a sensible, mature manner and not through petty stereotyping and shouting? Sometimes, I too find it hard to accept that I was wrong one way or another. But running away and blaming others isn't gonna help improve the situation. If you are indeed capable of storing "Morality", you must damn well be able to be patient and understanding towards others of their situation. Empathy is what I usually see lacking in most people; not just teenagers. If I made any generalizations, apologies in advance; I did not have a lot of the information I needed to actually comment on your situation. Thx for understanding :D
I've never heard a good word from my mom. She's never said "good job". Whenever I di something I was proud of instead of a compliment she would just make comments about things I could do better and stuff I suck at. She can't accept she's not right and when I finally prove I am right she thinks I'm attacking her. So if I disagree with her and start a conversation she says it's because of hormones and I'm being moody even though I'm reasonable. I dealt and still deal with some mental illnesses including anorexia which lead to other eating disorders. She blamed it all on being a teenager. She has always made a word teenager sound like an insult
@@nd2560 and some parents can just be illogical and refuse to accept they are wrong. My parents accused me of "faking being sick for attention in order to embarrass us" *after* I was diagnosed with, and I quote, "The worst case of pinkeye I've ever seen" by a doctor who had worked in pediatrics for decades.
So the "Use it or lose it" phase... That's why I'm caring about people, getting sad, having empathy or sympathy, and other related things less, and less, and less, so much less... This makes me happy.
This might mean the same thing in a less biological sense, but I think that's why identity formation is the most important thing to drive a person out of adolescence and into adulthood. The world seems more and more bleak in comparison to how it did during childhood, but when you "figure out" what you really care about and enjoy in life, those things tend to stick, and that realization makes the world stop getting bleaker.
Dash Lambda You know, I was half joking before (which should've been obvious), but now you're legitimately disturbing. Well, in the sense that I feel bad you're in this mental state, and worse that you're okay with it. But you'll grow out of it anyway, that's the whole point. Nothing I can say will make you believe that, but you will become more human as you age. Will you be a good person? That's up to you. But empathy is the highest form of human wisdom, and you will find it.

Can you please make videos for how your brain works and what changes it goes through in your 20s? Or better yet, for each decade/life period. That would be so great!!!!
That gives a nice scientific explanation as to why my brain went from being reasonably good both at math and languages to being palpably slow at math and awesome at languages around 16 when I was abusing my calculator as well as my computer.
And yet during this period we are asked to make probably some of the most important decisions of our lives...
Yup ;-;

I wish I had the reality stone for this issue

Awesome.
That isn't childhood, that's 1940s air raid vigilance. That is legit medieval nonsense.
School: *lectures random teen who isn't paying attention in class on how science is important*
Seriously though, I love how they teach ways that they could repair their own system, and then they just flat out ignore it because tradition.
Tradition, although it has its uses, should not be allowed to be a deciding factor. Tradition alone should not be a support mechanism.
actually it makes sense. elementary, middle and high school all have different start times just like jobs so it prepares you for whatever job you get.

Funny how there's a whole scientific explanation to why teenagers are mostly dumb, tired and emotionally conflicted and yet adults don't even try to help or at least understand it, even tho they already experienced that and know how it feels.

All adults need to be reminded of this every day. School times must change for tweens, teens and kids. School times must allow parents to work without causing job loss, and it does cause job loss. Healthcare must also become a basic human right for this reason, it affects teachers, parents, students and society at large..
i can't agree enough with your statement that healthcare should be a basic human right. i have so many things i need to go to my doctor and probably specialists about, but i can't afford it. it ought to be a basic human right, no matter someone's socioeconomic standing.
so while our brains aren't fully developed we are supposed to decide what to do with our life!
And expected to behave like adults whilst being treated like children.

Thank you
Propertyofbishco You're welcome.
+mrcoldman1515 What do you mean?
Teenagers: treated like children and are supposed to act like adults.

Yes but you're life is uncertain.
What seems to be small silly choices to you are big for a teenager; should I study chemistry or biology. A 5 second choice like that could change their op/ SAT scores, college courses, careers and of course their whole lives.

Dear Brain: Work harder, think better, grow faster, get stronger, hurry up because i can't stand being a teen any longer.
Take advantage of being a teen, grow and improve yourself while it's the easiest. Work on forming good habits, this is your one chance in life where you can define your future.

thanks for scaring me about that brain connection „use it or lose it” thing
If teen-hood is an important stage to use your brain ... why aren't we allowed to use our brains properly in school for critical thinking?
exactly
*adolescence

Lorissa Labudde You're thinking of boy scouts; which may not be mandatory, but it is highly suggested by the government and schools in general.

"Fake word"
Looks like someone isn't in tune with the wonders of the English language; where everything is a word and the points don't matter.
It's not what people think it is. Society has developed a stigma as well as a pretty negative view of us.
reasonably so
Very true
Preach it.
Quaxiji No you are dumb for making such an ignorant assumption.
What i dont understand is when you get upset or emotional (as a teenager) people around you just call it a phase?
They probably want to believe it will be over soon, but it makes the teen feel like they're actions are insignificant in the long run, and it doesn't matter what they do.

0.50 * 7 hours: 30 minutes of studying for each class

24-(0.75 * 7) - (0.50 * 7) - (1 * 7) = 8.25 hours left.

Turns out we aren't wasting our lives...
NO!!! THAT WILL TAKE MONTHS!
Turns out teen can think differently huh :)
Thanks :)
+john dwyer I.. am absolutely agree with you.

+eli heerter And obviously the same goes for women, but this is a big problem with young men.
|-/
+CoastaMonsta Support your first premise.
Not to mention the teenage years are when you learn all about the world, but youre not yet as jaded as adults are, so you're more willing to go out and help people, and try to make things better, before inevitably realizing your insignificance and succumbing to the pressures of society and become a carbon copy of everyone else.
That's...cynical.
Pikachu Labudde
Societal and lingual immersion _is_ still a modern, effective, and *present* method of learning a language.

One of the most frustrating feelings is being unjustly discredited for being "a teenager". I can have an argument against me mum in which I am totally correct. I can have science, morality, reasons, but no matter what, if my mom is already mad, she'll just boil it down to "being moody".
Nuggetzor Quote quote " against me mum in which I am totally correct."
Totally correct?
***** two kinds of people
Mr. Rize AG You sir have the mind and logical reasoning of a psychopathic murderer. THAT is deeply troubling. Get help.
