Try a rat trap they are usually much larger trap.

Good morning Chuck Paige & Family! How about getting several house cats for the rat problem? Can't believe the delivery people had so much trouble getting the refrigerator out of the box. Good size refrigerator! Nice assembly job Chuck; kidding of course. Moving right along, I like the work pace and progress of the crew. They're good and conscientious workers. The building is constructed like a Cold War bomb shelter. Good fortune, health, fun and happiness, Stay safe

I hope when they tile the floor, at the base of the stairs the finished tile is not more than a 10mm variation. It could become a trip hazard walking upstairs. Step risers should be between 175mm to 190mm max.
See if you can lay your hands on an electric rat trap. They're battery powered & get the job done without the "clean up" of a standard snap trap. Rats & mice love peanut butter as a bait.
I would have personally gone with ceiling fans LED lightings since there will be no A/C. Oh well, you can always switch out ceiling lightings later if you guys wanted to make a change.
