      @@njokuangela1871 hey thanks for the comment. so it all depends on what you want to do. Computer engineers can work as computer science professionals, so my attitude is to steer you there. You less you love love love the programming aspect so much and care very little about the integration of the programming and the computer hardware. CS has 283 ABET accredited programs which means you can still go an engineering route, in a way, if you want.

      @@modisaneunity4534 oh boy! do I have an update for you!
      I ended up getting into the Computer Engineering major. I basically started from scratch since my previous degree is in Music Performance. I tried getting into the master's program since I already had a bachelors, but I needed so many classes that it was basically like doing the bachelor for Computer Engineering. I am almost done with this new degree too. I am almost at senior year and will be finishing by October 2025. I would have preferred Software Engineering but my University doesn't offer that major. Computer Engineering in my uni has a veeery big chunk of Electrical Engineering courses, not that I didn't like it (Electrical Engineering) but it is certainly not 100% for me . However, I do appreciate and understand the value of the EE courses in Computer Engineering.
      One of my most pressing issues was that I was going to feel out of place because I am a few years older than most students and that I was going to have a hard time learning and studying since I come from a totally different major. It took some serious hard work while also working full-time outside of school, but it is definitely worth it. Engineering ended up being the major for me and it truly makes me feel accomplished how far I've come and how much I have been to learn and even reach the Dean's list and honor program through my whole major. I even met my current best friend by taking classes together.
      I am just a few months away from starting my Capstone project (which I am thankfully going to do with my best friend) and am also preparing myself to apply for Grad School too, still deciding if I should do a Master's or a special PhD program in engineering that lets me go straight from my bachelors to the PhD. Thanks again to Jake for this amazing video and how much he was able to help me with my decision. Hope my experience helps others too! I did a complete 180 and was totally worth it. It was incredibly scary but I promise you it is so gratifying and incredibly worth your time and sacrifice.

    Hope Jake reads this,
    I've been thinking a lot about getting a double major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. I know I could take Computer Engineering as my major. However, here are some of the reasons why I would be interested in a double major.
    1. I want to study both fields at a deeper level and not just take a couple of extra classes like in a minor. For example, understand those concepts that a Computer Scientist would not study and those that an Electrical Engineer would not study in a Computer Science major.
    2. Increase my chances of finding a job and being more competitive. I know that Electrical Engineering is flexible and could apply to jobs that a Computer Scientist could not.
    3. Avoid being unemployed. In the future, if I were not able to find a job in Electrical Engineering, I would have the option of finding a job in Computer Science and so on.
    4. Build a second source of income. I would not only want to depend on a source of income that comes only from my degree, but I would like to have at least two sources of income.
    5. Experience the best of both worlds, and if possible in the future, be able to study two masters.
    I know that when one studies a double major, it takes more time and money. However, I would care more about job security, and I think the best way is to have two bachelor's.
    In this scenario, what would be the most advisable thing to do, to study Computer Engineering or a double major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science?
    Please, can someone advise me? I feel lost

      Just do CE. there's no point in the double major. If you feel like you want to dive deeper into a certain topic, do it for your technical electives are do some projects on your own in free time.
      You will really learn when you get an internship or job, the technical skills required. In school you'll learn more of the theory.

    Loved this video. Can you do one to differentiate between Information Systems degrees and CS/CE degrees? I'm not an engineer. I have a business degree with an emphasis is information systems (MIS/BIS back in the day). I feel like employers frequently confuse titles by throwing "engineer" in there for say a systems administrator or analyst position. I hate this. I'm very careful to entertain "engineer" positions because the field and credential deserve some respect, and where it seems employers are all to willing to treat it like a prestige moniker. Administrators don't typically "graduate" to engineer based on seniority.

    • @JakeVoorhees
      @JakeVoorhees  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      yeah good call. Career positions are confusing and imo no one should be called an engineer, nor should a position be deemed that unless they truly require a full engineering degree from an ABET engineering school. I will write this video down on the list and get moving on it, thank you!

    Jake, Would love a Video on all about internships and does the type of Engineering Internship affect your career like Can you switch from HVAC to Aerospace engineering

    • @JakeVoorhees
      @JakeVoorhees  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Natasha, great question. Internships are used for two purposes. 1) To provide you another avenue to truly understand if you enjoy and are passionate about a certain career field. You don't get exposed enough to things like automotive, aerospace, biomedical, or any of the other 12ish sub-fields that we discuss in this video, "What do mechanical engineers do", so check that out th-cam.com/video/5wEteXzhtak/w-d-xo.html. It is very normal to do various internships in order to know what you like, so its fine to do HVAC then Aerospace then whatever, etc. And, 2) Once you know which direction you want to pursue in your career first, internships can be used to build your momentum towards the career niche that you want. Say you now know you want Aerospace, then you should be building relationships in that field, joining organizations in that field, doing internships there, talking more with those profs, etc.

    What is the difference between Computer systems engineering and Computer engineering?

    • @JakeVoorhees
      @JakeVoorhees  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Computer Engineering and Computer Systems Engineering are both subsets of Electrical/Electronics Engineering. Many universities do not even have computer engineering available. I glanced through the top four engineering schools, MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, and CalTech and none of them have computer engineering. They have electrical engineering and computer science together sometimes, which is where you can build a custom “computer engineering-like” major.
      Computer engineering integrates electronic engineering with computer sciences. Computer engineers design and develop computer systems and other technological devices.
      Computer systems engineers implement the network architects' designs, and solve the complex problems involved in the day-to-day operations of networks. They frequently test system operations, identify security risks, and research new products or processes that will improve system function.
      As you can see, the word “systems” is used within the definition of either speciality, so we’re really starting to split hairs here.
      However, there is computer hardware engineering, which the BLS reports having 71,000 employed engineers in the USA right now which is actually 5th on the list right now (1. Civil 329k, Electrical 328k, Mechanical 316k, Industrial 295k, and then Computer Hardware 71k). These engineers do not focus on the integration of their designs within greater systems.
      But in the end, I do not think any of this matters. Any electrical engineer or computer engineer can work in so many of the same jobs or roles. The differences simply come down to preferences, such as what companies and roles you want to intern for, what tech electives you take in your 3rd and 4th years, what events and job fairs you focus on, what engineering organizations/societies/clubs you want to be involved in, etc.
      Does this help and make sense? Let me know any follow up questions that you have and I will try to help you with those. Thank you!

      Being nervous taking any engineering program is completely 100% normal, but it is also so exciting. My advice is, if you still have a love for engineering but you seem to be falling out of computer, try a different field that is similiar. The beauty of engineering is how vast and numerous the fields are. You might end up not coping well with the computer program your school offers, but they might offer another degree close enough to what you wanted and it will work out better. Some degrees that are similar is computer science (programming side) robotics, electronics, electrical, mechatronics. All of these have overlapping classes but are different enough that you might find it better for your tastes. Keep at it

      I have 2 questions:
      1. Would IT and Electronics go hand in hand with each other? IT and Electronics are the only two hardware/software subjects i can pick with so far so just want to know if it's best to do both until 2022 when i can branch off into more specific subjects
      2. Which one is more important to be a Computer Hardware or Software Engineer? IT or Electronics? Google didn't really help me with an answer for this question

      @JakeVoorhees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey thanks for the comment. I know this one is confusing as I get this question often.
      Computer Engineering is actually a subset of Electronics Engineering which is within Electrical Engineering. Electrical Engineering itself is the more broad major. Many programs offer them together as “Electrical & Computer Engineering” and it's not possible to achieve an isolated CPE degree.
      Electrical Engineering includes things like power, telecommunications, signals & controls, and electronics, and computer engineering.
      Computer engineering concentrates more on programming and how the hardware and software are made built to work together. On the other hand, Electronic Engineering concentrates more on circuits, loops, communication, wireless connections, etc.
      Both of these branches will study the same fundamentals but Electrical Engineering tends to focus on power generation and distribution while Computer engineering will specialize in computer systems. In other words, software-controlled hardware and its interconnections.
      Computer Engineering does more software related work; such as code development. On the other hand, Electronic Engineering does more hardware related work; such as working on a computer modern board, circuits, wiring, and alike.
      Here are my videos on these subjects:
      “What Do Electrical Engineers Do?” th-cam.com/video/zRawKI6Qsm0/w-d-xo.html

    Hey Jake, I'm trying to teach myself microcontrollers; I have found two buds that program microcontrollers but one uses C and the other uses javascript. What are your opinions on the direction I should go?

    • @ictogon
      @ictogon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      what the fuck kind of microcontroller is programmed in javascript

    • @coderconroy
      @coderconroy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      C is by far the most prevalent. If you want to really understand them then do a project in assembly.

    • @matchamitminze
      @matchamitminze ปีที่แล้ว

      C/C++ are very prevalent, as is ASM (the exact “flavour” of which will vary). Rust is an emerging language in embedded development but is still quite immature, so you’ll find the most resources in the former three. :)

    So you did say that a network engineer is considered a computer engineer right?

    • @JakeVoorhees
      @JakeVoorhees  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for the comment. Ya network engineering is one thing computer engineers can do, among a lot of other stuff.
      Computer engineering is at the intersection of electronics engineering and computer science. So you can do any of that stuff.
      And since computer engineering is a subset of Electrical Engineering, this video is good for you too, “What Do Electrical Engineers Do” th-cam.com/video/zRawKI6Qsm0/w-d-xo.html
      And a lot of computer or EEs want to work in mechatronics eventually,
      “What Do Mechatronics Engineers Do” th-cam.com/video/4YjLZcQRLds/w-d-xo.html
      And here is a video on the high paying EE jobs, “Jobs for Electrical Engineers over $100,000” th-cam.com/video/Vi4hkCeNWs0/w-d-xo.html

      Hey thanks for the comment. CPE isn't easy, but its a great field. I ranked it really high in my latest “Engineering Degree Tier List” th-cam.com/video/nfayHVJlKgQ/w-d-xo.html.
      Make sure you watch these CPE related videos too: “Jobs for Electrical Engineers over $100,000” th-cam.com/video/Vi4hkCeNWs0/w-d-xo.html
      Also, a lot of electrical engineers wish to work in mechatronics/robotics, so check out this video “What Do Mechatronics Engineers Do?” th-cam.com/video/4YjLZcQRLds/w-d-xo.html
      And since computer engineering is a subset of electrical engineering, “What Do Computer Engineers Do?” th-cam.com/video/hiL-cTbz188/w-d-xo.html
      I hope these help. Let me know what follow up questions you have so I can help you with those. I respond to all questions. Cheers and thanks again!!
