  • The six essential tools appear in a ninja manual known as the Shoninki, written by Natori Masazumi around the year 1581. A translation of the Shoninki is available in a book titled, "True Path of the Ninja" by Antony Cummins and Yoshie Minami.
The six tools are: 1. Amigasa (straw hat), 2. Kaginawa (hook rope), 3. Sekihitsu (stone pencil), 4. Kusuri (field medicine), 5. Sanjaku Tenugui (3 foot cloth), and 6. Tsuketake (fire starter), or donohi (body warmer). Hooks made by Iga Tengu

Try drawing the firesteel away from the char cloth while holding the "scraper/striker " steady next to the cloth. You will find that the sparks hit the target more readily.

Thanks. I really like how it turned out. The six tools are things I wanted for a long time. Thinking of all the reasons it was these six is intriguing.

Did you make that Yatate or buy it somewhere? I only just recently learned about such a thing and there is very little information on them in English that I could find. I'd actually like one but most of the ones I've seen are antiques while yours looks very new in comparison. I figure I'll have to make my own if I want one, that's why I ask if you made your own or if you actually managed to find somewhere that sells them.

It's from a Japanese eBay seller called Igarashi. It's from the 1800s.

Something to try ... when lighting you warmer/fire storage. Hold the steel still (in position over the device) and PULL you feresium rod toward you. This will stabalize the direction the sparks go and more efficiently light you device. REI!

Don't you mean Amigasa? A Jingasa is the "war hat" worn by Ashigaru. Not the flexible straw hats with eye holes.

Now that's some small pack right there what would it be like in the modern day to pack that minimal?

    • @gingercore69

Well, actually... Instead of the hat, you can have a baseball cap(wich is widely used to conceal the face, and is less suspicious than a strawhat) or a hoodie... instead of the pencil, a good old pen... Instead of 3feet cloth, you can have a scarf or similar stuff... For climbing, you will still need a rope and a hook... Get a small first aid box... For the fire starter... If it is for ligh, a flashlight... If it is to starr fires, a lighter...
I would recomend always having a lighter, one of those "swiss knives" that have lots of tools... A good metal pen(that also works as a weapon if needed) , a metal camping flashlight(that also work as a weapon if needed) and one of those "capes" that people use when its raining... Stuff for first aid is always a good idea... And as much rope or string as you can carry... Hook not always needed but can be useful...

gingercore69 problem with hook: it has to be small and most importantly, sturdy. You dont want to fall beacuse your hook cant hold your weight

Ninjutsu is pretty abstract at its core, so it should be thought of as an art of principles. With that in mind, I'd recommend "Iga and Koka Ninja Skills" first.
