0:35 He hit the nail right on the head. You can get so lost in your own darkness that you start to think that there's no possible way that anybody has been where you are right now. RIP Chris Cornell
AJ Nemesis You're NEVER alone. It's all been lived through before. lt's important to never forget that. There are always people out there with the same Problems
Io he didn't think about that when he was making fun of Layne Staley's battle on stage at a concert! I've yet to forgive him for that 👟👟here's some more shoes to throw at him like the crowd did !
A. H. I'm pretty sure a guy like Axl Rose is a multimillionaire too and one thing he isn't is down to earth. It's not about being rich, there's plenty of rich assholes with no class.

Layqa S. that is really cool, I recently lost my dad, and I called quite a few people for support , but they are busy with their life right at the moment... so I just sit back
Elizabeth Octubre so sorry for that Eli, hope things get better with time, I'm sure your dad is looking down at you and making sure you're ok. It is true that "friends" tend to turn their backs on us when we most need them, but we gotta try and find other people that actually will care, the world isn't full of cold hearts yet ♡ Also there's always a way out of our suffering right? guidance from a professional in the matter, spirituality, books, and music ♡
NARKISDUDE that was a lifetime ago. I mean literally a lifetime, 23 years ago... But yeah, being a public figure and having such a long career, they are all bound to say stupid stuff every now and then. Who doesn't?
He's not really close with anyone, outside of his family. He seems to mostly keep to himself and appreciate his other hobbies, when he's not doing musical things.
Here's a different perspective for you: let someone know when they've made a typo and they'll start to double-check their messages before sending it out into the world, lest we have spelling errors everywhere.
James really seems like he's found a steady peace within himself. It's great to see him like this, especially considering the misguided and troubled angry man he was for so much of his life. He seems truly happy.
"Check in with each other." That's so important, and great advice. I'm an extreme introvert, with a tad bit of social anxiety, so it's my natural state to hide myself away from family and friends for lengths of time. I don't suffer from depression, and I generally enjoy my mostly solitary life (I have a young son, and a dog.. entertainment enough for me usually), but I totally appreciate that the people in my life "check in" with me once in awhile.
Hetfield knows depression, and it's so wonderful to see a man as 'manly' as he is talking about depression the way he is here. It's so VERY important. What a great man xxx ooo
Its been proven that people who like to correct other peoples grammar, are very insecure, and need to point out others mistakes in order to feel better about themselves.
Arent you pointing out others "mistakes"as well? Looks like you just did a self diagnosis. Impressive that you didnt show this "proof" that you claim exists. What does making shit up say about you?
I wouldn't exactly say Fell On Black Days "inspired" Until It Sleeps. It had a similar time signature or something like that. I think it's the "it's grips you so hold me, it stains you so hold me-" part of the song, that refrain was similar to the one in Fell On Black Days, or that's what it reminded them and of. So while the song was still in its demo/work in progress phase, before it was given a real title, they referred to it as FOBD as like a temporary working title. It had more to do with the song structure. I wouldn't go as far to say it was actually inspired by Fell On Black Days.
Best words I've heard Hetfield say. I hope you're all doing ok out there. Goodness knows I have my dark moments and I hope you all can get through yours. Let's all get through this together!! Thank you James!!
How can you criticize him for this? Instead of going for a cliché, like "great loss, great artist", he drew the attention to the fact that depression is a much more common problem than we think. And you might never realize how the person next to you is suffering because they won't tell you. And then one day it might be too late.
Much respect to James Hetfield - he seems like a genuinely compassionate and wise person (in addition to obviously being one of the greatest musicians and vocalists ever). Great man! So sad for the loss of Chris Cornell - another great musician who had a unique voice - terrible that he couldn't escape the darkness.
Listening to CC songs all this week makes one think that this was not anything new he was dealing with. So many of those songs address dark thoughts, internal struggles, death, religion, the afterlife, and suicide.
Just a reminder to not hold back when have something good to say to someone. You don't know everything that he or she is going through, and your positive statement or compliment might lift them up just enough to keep them from doing the dark thing they've been thinking about.
The bassist/violinist of the band I'm in at the moment, got an emergency call saying his brother had attempted suicide, by deliberately overdosed on sleeping pills and walked to a park to die, the day before Chris Cornell died. Luckily, our bandmate found him, but we were just so shocked. Give your loved ones a hug, you'll never know they need it.

James has definitely fought his share of demons. It's sad that no one recognized what was going on with Chris Cornell. From interviews I've seen, he was a very unselfish, caring and fun loving guy. It hurts to think that Chris couldn't get through this thing he was going through, and that his friends and family are no doubt suffering from this loss. So sad. Peace to you all in the name of Christ.
James is correct in saying that it's important for those who have or arre battling with addiction to regularly check in and be checked up on with/by family or friends. The Angle Strong app is perfect for that. You enter a life line that is a list of contacts to check in with at appointed times through out every day. And it's GPS enabled so, if you don't check in your life line list is alerted and they can find you based on your GPS location. Might not be 100% fool proof but seems to be a very useful tool.
James good call , I am James as well > lol Anyway , I see lots of people saying how could this happen ? It is so unexpected. Not really but I don't think we could put the pieces together until it was to late. there are so many signs of what he going through and it is complete darkness. I'm sure his family loved him so much but he may have felt" trapped and alone so far from home" if you are a manic depressant you probably should not be left alone. I'm just guessing , I know very little but what a tragedy and great loss. I was listening to " It Doesn't Remind Me of anything" and trying my best to sing along on the 17th ( not even close)and I had no idea he passed until 4:30 am on the 18th. Well said, James. Funny he calls it the "Grunge World" though. As I remember it, Soundgarden came out around the same time as Metallica and both were METAL bands.

well put Mr. Hetfield. we all need to be more aware of what those around us are going through. some may blame his band mates for not looking out for Chris. sometimes it's difficult to know what someone is feeling deep down in side unless they really open up.
Just learned about Chris,I'm an oldie in the UK and confess I didn't know of Chris until the Bond Film came out,I thought Chris's song was the best Bond theme ever, punchy and refreshingly different, just like Daniel Craig, the best Bond ever and will ever be.. RIP Chris..
I suffered a deep dark depression in the early 2000's, by the grace of God I didn't stay there. In the past 5 years, I have lost 2 friends to suicide. 1 guy I grew up with, and he left behind a wife & 2 kids.
Evening Darkens all of our lives Like unknown sadness spoken only through cries The ones who've gone have left their scars Now the night sky twinkles with another new star As long as we remember with our mind and our heart The loved one we lost will never be forgot High up above looking down from the sky That new star will twinkle like a wink of an eye Shining down taking the dark out of night As well as our lives for only love is the light So if we feel helpless there's no need to cry For as long as we remember that star will never die Twinkle on Chris! Much love, Anthony
Condolences to friends and family ... Rest in peace , eternal glory and Thank You for everything Mister Sir Chris Cornell Legend Legendo Angel Andjele ... God bless ... Boze molimo oprostite , pomozite i spasite ako nije problem ... Amen ... Amin ...
James is one of the nicest Rock stars on the planet. A lot of Metallica fan says St.Anger is the worst Metallica Album, I like to think that True fans embrace it as any other album... It is my favorite Metallica for one reason and one reason only, it's probably the most biographical and honest album, Metallica ever made. James went through very troubled times, alcohol addiction, rehab, almost left Metallica, Jason left, fighting with his brother from another mother, Lars... You're an inspiration James.
I love James A Lot! & Respect what he Did say! But I was expecting a few words about Chris eg Maybe On Friendship level, What type relationship they had, Words of Respect? Or Even a simple Story? Don't shoot people" Just Surprised that's all.
I wish this was just a bad dream. Along with shining stars like Sir David Attenborough, Chris Cornell was one of my "I'm not worthy" people. Angels are crying. I know I have.
Just to clear some of the comments up. James & Metallica knew both Chris and Soundgarden. They toured together for Lollapalooza & a Metallica tour. Other Seattle bands to support Metallica were Alice In Chains & The Screaming Tree's. Jerry Cantrell also supported Metallica while AIC were on hiatus before Layne's death. There was never rivalry between Metallica & AIC for proof check the intro to Enter Sandman during AIC's Unplugged performance. Metallica were actually in attendance that night. As far as Metallica & the Seattle Scene goes, Kirk Hammett was friends with Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl. Its no secret that during the mid 90's when Glam Rock was killed off, GNR committed self sabotage & thrash lost its way Metallica tried to reinvent themselves as a "Grunge" band the evidence is for all too hear on Load and Reload. They also took to wearing Guy liner something that would have seemed impossible during the Kill' em All era & MoPs. The Seattle band Metallica tried to sound most like during this period was Soundgarden. I'm a fan of both bands but Soundgarden always sought to evolve and experiment while remaining successful. Metallica however have always been forced to go back to basics after an album flopped. As far as James' attitude goes on this interview, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Hetfield is an alcoholic and he has that AA trait where hes still trying to tell the world about his again years later because he's been given the platform to speak. With alcoholics it's all about them & it's clear for all to see on Some Kind of Monster documentary. Metallica is basically an on going battle between James & Lars for the leadership of the band.
is very awesome the change of james in the time, seein videos of his interview with lars before they put out master of puppets, he not even talk xD he was an absolutely shy person that only smiles and drink beer, now is almost a philosopher of the words and obviusly the music, incredible think that teen boy made mop, rdl, ajfa, and now h..tsd, he is a master (in more of cases)
Unrelated - That's Mistress Carrie. She was really nice to me when I was home sick from school with chicken pox and called in for a request. She has my axe.
I believe that 1. the bodyguard admits to walking chris back to his hotel room and "giving chris two Ativans" 2. He admits to being called by chris to come back to his telly room to "fix chriss computer"(which is the bodyguards excuse to be on chriss keyboard because HE is the one who posted the song "By Crooked Steps" and underneath wrote a lyric from the same song which read,"I am the shape of the hole in your heart" and they say that Chris posted this before he hanged himself. 3. I believe Chris trusted this guy enough to let his guard down because if u cant trust somebody who is being paid well to supposedly take a fucking scolding hot bullet for u and possibly die for u then u hired the wrong bodyguard right?? So i believe he crushed 2 or 3 extra Ativan up into a drink that he handed Chris. PLUS remember he ADMITS to handing chris 2 additional ativans that Chris was actually aware of... When he saw that Chris was fucked up, the ex-marine psychopath with trained murder skills strangled Chris in some trained professional manner. Arranged the body in the bathroom to make it look like a suicide by hanging. 4. The wife claims that Chris made a phone call to her slurring his words. I believe this call POSSIBLY was made by the bodyguard on Chriss phone to the wife to let her know it was accomplished. 5. Then the bodyguard admits to being called by the wife to check on Chris and so he kicked in TWO fucking doors to get to him. (WTF wouldnt u run downstairs as fast as possible and tell the front desk its an emergency and to open Chriss room??) In my focused visualization of human behavior in a certain situation like this one I envision 99 times out of 100 the worried party SPRINTING downstairs to the front desk and NOT kicking in the door of a fucking Rock Legends hotel room, risking some embarrassing news story or something. Im just sayin, like what if Chris was in the fucking shower?? He just rocked Detroit an hour earlier. I always shower after a sweaty ass concert. Why wouldnt he?? 6. The autopsy showed 7 broken ribs. Thats pretty fucking excessive for a healthy man to have from CPR. And the bodyguard admits to finding the body(dateline anyone? 48 hours anyone?) on the floor with "blood coming from his mouth". How does something as stretchy as an exercise resistance band cause bleeding from a hanging? How does a 6'2" man physically hang himself from a 6 and a half foot door? His knees would have literally been scraping the ground. He didnt and wouldnt leave his kids with so many unanswered questions. This is a tough loss. I just want to clear Chriss name. He didnt go out like a weak coward. He was stolen from us. This reminds me of when a crazy teenager kills their parents, and in their defense trial they claim the dad/mom was molesting him/her. So the parent not only has their one and only life ripped away, but their everlasting name is fucking smeared through the mud. This shit literally makes me ill. Its mindblowing that Chris had NO real friends who have come out in his defense. Sincerely... FUCK EM ALL. Shame on them... All i know is 90 times out of 100 the person who admits to being the last to see the victim, or the person who finds the body is almost always the killer.. and in this case the bodyguard is both of those.. Im not out to put this guy behind bars... not in the least. They cremated Chris a day before the fucking funeral out of paranoia and guilt. The case is closed. I just somehow need to help clear his name. He didnt murder himself. Period. I just fucking know... many people know. But not enough. Too many people accepted it as a suicide and moved on with their fast paced lives... Anyways sorry for rambling, but i felt compelled to... Again, Chris was stolen from us.. thank u for having eyes to see the truth when something doesnt add up...
Wtf James????? She asked a very simple and precise question, smdh, Chris had a lot of haters. I loved Metallica for a long time, but now idk, big loss of respect, when he failed to show true respect for another amazing talented musician. Damn!
It´s sad who want to die, that´s a desease and needs to be discussed.. I have panic attacks, depression etc. But I´m Opposite, i want to live, forever, to be a fuckn wise old man and teach others how to be good. Life it´s all you have, u don´t know what you have in the other side, but don´t hurry, you will know some day.. just don´t have to be crazy to practice love, love your friends, love your wife, love what you have, have some responsibility knowing that we are one, do what you love, don´t get bored, don´t use drogs if you are not cool to do it, love yourself, try to make the person next to you happy, life it´s that! Yes, it´s hard, but you can chose. We all have sad days, but the good days it´s a victory, for me that I have depression even I was 15 years old, I must say.. life it´s done by little sad days and good days, we all have, U must know, you are not alone, we are all one.All lost it´s hard to every one of us in some way.. it´s sad, but make something sad to good, Be better with what you have learned! Before you do something with yourself think, "Who am I going to reach/afflict next to me with my attitudes?", mabye Chester was afflicted with Cornell´s attitude, Cornell didn´t wanted Chester Dead, so.. think, you can´t decide if you will get depressed or not, how? Get help, practice good things to you, go to a psychiatrist, but don´t let get worst and worst. Much love of BRASIL. Queen - Who Wants to Live Forever

He's not really close with anyone, outside of his family. He seems to mostly keep to himself and appreciate his other hobbies, when he's not doing musical things.

For what i've read, Metallica's Song "Until it Sleeps" is musicaly inspired by Black Hole Sun. I'm quite suprised he didn't call that.
I wouldn't exactly say Fell On Black Days "inspired" Until It Sleeps. It had a similar time signature or something like that. Floyd Waters I heard Load was inspired by the time Cornell blew a sticky load on papa Het's hair. Reload was about the second time it happened.

Damn James is such a cool fucking dude man! RIP CHRIS
Chris Cornell's Mix of U2 and Metallica's ONE was AMAZING.
Maybe a nice mention about Chris as a person, James?
well said. Always love Metallica's music, but to get a bit more personal with the artists takes it to the next level.
Evening Darkens all of our lives
Like unknown sadness spoken only through cries
The ones who've gone have left their scars
Now the night sky twinkles with another new star
As long as we remember with our mind and our heart
The loved one we lost will never be forgot
High up above looking down from the sky
That new star will twinkle like a wink of an eye
Shining down taking the dark out of night
As well as our lives for only love is the light
So if we feel helpless there's no need to cry
For as long as we remember that star will never die
Twinkle on Chris!
Much love,
Anthony
Beautifully said, Mr Hetfield.
James is awesome. He'll always be one of my all time favorite singers. The man is a legend.
Where's the part when he talk about Chris?
I hope james never dies
I just can't look at James the same since Sandman, dude, that was a tough time for me dude.
Does anyone know what shirt James is wearing? Looks pretty cool
I almost cried watching this
Oh, you're gonna get all of us excited for a raw interview and then cut it off literally in the middle of a sentence? GOOD TIMES THANKS.
Wow what a great message this guy rocks literally and figuratively.
Well said James. More people need to hear this.
Even though i'm a Grunge fan I have a huge respect to the James Hetfield and Mettalica.
is very awesome the change of james in the time, seein videos of his interview with lars before they put out master of puppets, he not even talk xD he was an absolutely shy person that only smiles and drink beer, now is almost a philosopher of the words and obviusly the music, incredible think that teen boy made mop, rdl, ajfa, and now h..tsd, he is a master (in more of cases)
Unrelated - That's Mistress Carrie. She was really nice to me when I was home sick from school with chicken pox and called in for a request. She has my axe.
whats with the background noise??
Thank you James for being an inspiration.
R.I.P Chirs
Point taken, remember the people that love you, and the hurt it would cause.
Darkness is so tricky, it's alluring and destructive at the same time.
Wade Guidry darkness imprisoning me all that I see absolute horror
James says what I think and feel sometimes
James H is such a intelligent and talented individual....
If I'm Not Mistaken I think Chris actually named it "Disappearing One" R.I.P.
Wtf James????? She asked a very simple and precise question, smdh, Chris had a lot of haters. I loved Metallica for a long time, but now idk, big loss of respect, when he failed to show true respect for another amazing talented musician. Damn!
The pharmaceutical industry killed Chris Cornell. Side effects of prescription meds.
Respect! Well said
Well spoken.
It´s sad who want to die,
that´s a desease and needs to be discussed..
Queen - Who Wants to Live Forever
there is no one more out of touch than James Hetfield. He checked out a long time ago.
what.?
WTF was playing in the background?
Is this guy really giving a speach about Chis Cornell, after belittling Layne Staley on stage? REALLY?!
Rest In Peace Beautiful soul
James is such a nurturing & caring guy....he's been through the mill and has come out the other side a much kinder & respectful man...love the guy!
Very poignant, heartfelt, and authentic.
I shouldn't have watch these.. Wtf. I have been a fan for Metallica and soundgarden. But his response really pissed me off.
man he knows he's way with words
I wonder if he would say the same thing about GG Allen and the punk community ....
Hetfield is very articulate. Dude fuckin' rocks
