- Miniware sent me their newest addition, the TS80P soldering iron to review. Compared to the older TS80, the TS80P hasn't changed much. However, it's more powerful packing 65% more power.

Nice review! But IMO you've missed the biggest improvement, which is being able to use standard USB Power Delivery instead of the proprietary Qualcomm charging stuff. But +1 on the call for a station, or at least a reasonable stand.
That grip (shape) is the biggest win. It's the biggest, close to major issue I had with the (older) TS80

Point the tip down on the table and let the tip fall out. The quick-release is such a clever way to changing the tips and not scarfing them up with pliers when hot. I'm impressed.
Amazing review
The TS80P motherboard fits perfectly fine in the TS80 body, I have done it as I personally don't like the grip, and how it can easily pop the tips off. Would be cool if they just sell the motherboard. Only reason I got a new one was because I fried my TS80 when I was soldering a live 12v wire while using a a quickcharge 3.0 car charger connected to the car to power the iron 😁
Pretty sure you can just change the grips- I think both main bodies of the iron are the same?

All you need is a PD2.0 power bank, to be completely portable, go-anywhere soldering iron
Are the tips themselves interchangeable? Or do you need to buy a whole new element with that too that you want attached to it?
I got mine and I love it. But I'm searching for a suitable powerbank for the ts80p, and I'm super unsure which one to get. Any tips on that?
I don't think you mentioned but I assume it is PD compatible because that was a complaint I had heard about the previous version because that was a common power supply for some people but I assume it is because of the power output
The easiest way to ground the iron was shown in the video: The computer style power cable that was connected to the bench power supply: Simply use the clamp on the middle hole (ground bin).

I wonder if the separate ground lug actually makes a difference, especially as the USB-C connector has 4 dedicated ground pins
The power source it comes with doesn't have a connection to ground. And power banks don't have either, so you need to use the ground connection if you're worried about ESD.

ts80 upgraded with ralim version is what you need for rc hobbies .. if you soldering xt90 and 10awg wire for example you need ts80p or ts100.. thats my opinion about ts80 after using it since released
The stock TS80 is rated 18W (9V 2A) as mentioned in this video, but I've found that, with Ralim's firmware and at least one of my QC3 supplies, I can consistently get it to use almost 28W (at 11.8V) while heating, at least according to its display.
It would be interesting to know if the TS-80P exhibits a similar property with Ralim's firmware. If not, the TS-80P's increased power rating may not be as beneficial as it first appears, as 30W isn't much of an improvement over 28W - though of course this will depend on the power supply used and potentially other factors.
I noticed this with my Aukey PA-T11 USB mains supply, which has 6 USB-A ports, with 2 of those being QC3, and a total power rating of 60W. However it only claims to supply 1.5A at "9-12V", which is the standard QC3 current, I believe, so it absolutely isn't guaranteed to supply 28W over QC3, and this might be a quirk of my particular unit for all I know! :)
how practical is it to use this to replace a weller bench 60w solder iron on a day to day use

I think I would just make a simple ground lead from an old power cord .... Just keep the ground and get rid of the other two wires.
Everyone has old power cords around .
I wish they made heating elements little bit more snug so that I wouldn't feel like I am about to break the 3.5mm port off, that's the only thing I hate about my ts80.

@@alejandroperez5368 well then I can tell you that tip is properly inserted. I have been using this device for more than two years and have 3 tips for it. They are all the same. Manufacturing tolerance is just too much.
@@Levent_Ergun you said it was too snug. Being too snug means you are having a hard time inserting the tip because the tolerance is very low.
A high tolerance = a large gap or distance = loose.

More power, more heat are sustained heat, so in and out quickly. My pet hate is waiting for an iron to heat up. The new model appears to be hot by the time it would take me to pick up the iron, get it to the board, line everything up and solder.
For any Americans: There is an "L" in solder, it is no soder.
You forgot the CONS:
- The new hot-swap handle is sightly lose (more on some then others), and dont feet stable nor premium in the hand, the TS80 at-least had a stable handle.
- Tips working is hit or miss, theres a lot of people having issues with "No-Tip Problem".
- Overall for 70-80$ the build quality is not there, comparing to any dock based iron, its not even close, it looks pretty but thats about it.
- If you think you can plug it into any usb-c hub/power brink, you will be wrong, even tho its says it supports more options, its false information. You still need a dedicated usb-c power brink (basically the kit or very few other selected models), making this no more better then a TS100 with laptop charger.
I returned mine, may look into the TS100 as its half the price, but honestly, ill just pick up a dock station one for about 60$ and never look back. Im also disappointed in the reviewer (he is paid after all) to not to mention a single CON.
