    This is a great video with a lot of resource. I had two strokes when I was a kid. So I have balance, mobility, and I can’t see out of my right field cut vision. But I can see real well just can’t see out of the corner so I will run into things. I’m not real found of labs, golden retrievers that much. I hear rough collies is a good breed or standard poodle, or German Shepard. I have only found two rough collie places in the United States. Do you know other places that do not have no labs or golden retrievers?

    Excellent research !!! Not everyone really knows how to train a K-9 properly and according to the purpose. Early training at early age.

    How is someone going to get a dog when their disabled? People on disability don’t have money to pay for services dogs. I have a service dog that helps alert me before I have a Migraine. Now I need another and they are so expensive. Is there grants for service dogs?

    I loved your video. Could you please help me or connect me to obtain a Service dog. I’ve struggled most of my life with several disabilities. My psychiatrist diagnosed me with PTSD,
    ADHD, Fear in large groups, anxiety and paralyzing panic attacks. I know there are many people who have disabilities but please help me.

    The thing I'm concerned about, is when you get one, do You pay the $20,000-$50,000 up front? Cause I've been suggested multiple times to get one because of my anxiety and panic attacks, but the cost alone fills me with anxiety

      Some programs provide their dogs for low cost but others are more expensive
      Then some offer payment plans and others require 1/2 right off
      I owner trained my mobility service dog so I only know what other people have told me and from reading about organizations

    • @saltydinonuggies1841
      @saltydinonuggies1841 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Often times yes, but you can also owner train if you need to. That would be where you get the dog yourself and train them yourself (or with a trainer of your choice). That’s the route I’m trying to go though though it isn’t too much cheaper.

      @@saltydinonuggies1841 I rescue my dogs. Then I owner train. It costs time more than money. It takes a long time to find a suitable rescue. And then you have a 50% failure rate. I just have a person who will be willing to take the dog if it washes out. They are very willing because they get a very well trained dog and excellent pet. It is just that then you have to start the process again. Its tempting to put up with an unsuitable dog for that reason. If the shelter allows you to bring a trainer and temperament test, it reduces the risk of failure.

      I'm very blessed because I got mine through an organization that provides service dogs to disabled vets (I'm a disabled vet) and autistic children at no cost to the recipient. The dog is trained for TWO years, that's why they are so expensive. I received upwards of 200 hours training. Half at the facility and half in your home setting.

      @@SDLilly_and_SDITDaisy That's actually the problem I have. Some things like T1D are probably fairly easy, but for anxiety and panic attacks that feel as though they are a severe hindrance to my day to day life (constantly paranoid about everything, always thinking I'm gonna die, hardly eating and losing weight because of it, not being able to walk 10 feet from my house, etc. etc. etc.) , I have No idea how I would train a dog for that, so I would have to get it professionally trained

      @@Mumble8988 there are many who owner trained that deal with the same things as you. You can always use a regular well reputable trainer to help once you research what would help you. Also join a owner training service dog group many who have the same issues. An give you task ideas.

    • @amandaowens1008
      @amandaowens1008 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Sandy Stewart you can owner train and use a regular reputable trainer to help with the obedience side. Unfortunately there are not a lot of ADI programs in the US that work with owner dogs. Also can join Owner Trained Diabetic Alert Dogs on Facebook. I trained my own T1D alert dog. But really research and make sure it’s the right path for you. It takes at minimum 2 years to train a service dog.

    50k for a dog that would only live from 7 to 12 years when you will get that dog at around 2 years old, means you are only getting maybe 8 years out of that investment. Also, these animals are meant for the part of the population that can’t afford that amount. So, unless these is done by organizations and funded by a large group of people, it wouldn’t make sense. It is too cost prohibiting for the ones who need it.

  • @sdigf3167
    @sdigf3167 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    There are fewer than 80 ADI accredited organization in the entire US. Most people who are disabled live in poverty. The REASON that there are so many pets in public is directly related to organizations like yours. It may not have been you, but many organizations like yours campaigned heavily against owner trained dogs. When they lost, they went to the news and complained about all the "fake dogs" (that did not exist at the time). This taught the public how to get around the law and the hope from Facilities was that this mess would get the laws changed. This was done because organizations like yours did not want the competition. Yes, non disabled people and their pets are now a problem, but that is partly due to your bias. Being a disability advocate, I have known hundreds of owner trained dogs and the vast majority were very well trained. I have seen ADI trained dogs who did not function as well, and most puppy raisers are horrendous by harassing disabled people with owner trained dog. This bias is ableism at it's worst. This is bias plain and simple. You can NOT have a monopoly on deciding who gets a service dog. For people who want to owner train: These organizations have failures too. They easily find homes for well trained dogs. If you want to owner train, all you have to do is find someone who will take a dog that is well trained in obedience. Temperament assessment isn't that hard, There are many, many resources online. The worst is that you will put a year into a dog and then have to wash it, but you would have to wait two to five years anyway. It's a win win.

    • @saltydinonuggies1841
      @saltydinonuggies1841 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes thank you. And often owner trained dogs are more catered to their handlers needs. It all depends on what you can afford and what you need. I need one for PTSD and haven’t found many or really any organizations that supply PTSD service dogs to anyone but veterans. And any that do cost upwards of $20,000 out of pocket. It’s atrocious that service dogs aren’t covered by insurance.

    • @sdigf3167
      @sdigf3167 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@saltydinonuggies1841 It’s also discrimination that no one talks about. Non combat PTSD is more likely to occur in women. So what we have is a situation where the majority of research is done on male veterans. The majority of dogs are given to male veterans. That is a bias that needs to be addressed. PTSD is not somehow less important or severe just because a civilian or a woman has it.

      Agreed, shes hurting us.
      While i agree, many people can't train their dogs, but i was able to teach mine in 2 years,
      I agree, its a double edge sword that ends up hurting disabled more
      Tons of professional videos online, i taught everything from guide dog, touching buttons, closing doors, cpr, left or right sided weakness help, etc.
      But scent work is harder especially for blood or urine scent training,

      Owner train your dog. If you don’t have the skills, hire a private trainer. Even pet stores have good trainers for the basics. Then you can train tasks and work on your own or with a private trainer.
