- The San Francisco Cable Car is an iconic symbol of the city's transportation system and a beloved attraction for visitors. These historic cable cars have been in operation since the late 19th century and offer a unique and nostalgic way to explore the hilly streets of San Francisco.
The cable car system operates using an underground cable that runs beneath the street. The cable is continuously moving and is powered by a central powerhouse. The gripman, located inside the car, controls the movement of the car by manually grasping and releasing the moving cable with a mechanical grip device.
San Francisco's cable car network consists of three lines: the Powell-Hyde Line, the Powell-Mason Line, and the California Street Line. Each line has its own distinctive route, traversing different neighborhoods and landmarks. The lines offer scenic views of the city's iconic sights, including Lombard Street, Coit Tower, and Fisherman's Wharf.
Riding a San Francisco Cable Car is an experience in itself. Passengers can choose to either stand on the running boards outside the car or sit inside on the wooden seats. As the cable car climbs up steep hills and navigates sharp turns, riders can enjoy breathtaking views of the city's skyline and the San Francisco Bay.

Nice one. I remember decades ago riding the Powell Street Line up from Fisherman's Wharf through the fog at night, chilly and damp (and that was in August), up to the lights of the city. An experience never to be forgotten. Some of those streets on the California Street Line are the ones where Bullitt was filmed back in the '60s, although at a quicker pace.

@@ActionKid It was special. On that trip, we also drove over to Sausalito and sat up on the peak of Mt. Tamalpais watching the fog roll in from the Pacific through the Golden Gate; where we sat was in a grove of small trees and shrubs with dozens of hummingbirds flitting around us.

Going up that hill seemed to be a strain, going down was fun, lol! I don't remember the cable cars being so loud...but I was a teenager when the family took a trip to San Francisco. Thanks for the enjoyable memory AK.
They’re surprisingly loud!
I suspect a lot of the noise is just from the sheer weight of the cars! They're quite heavy. But it's not a strain...the system was built to haul the cars up the hill at (up to) 9.5 mph, and it works quite well!

This video inspired me so much that I want to make my own cable car now
16:30 to the right is the apartment building I lived in 30 years ago. I was a bit back from the street but could still hear the gears and switchbacks and "ding-ding" of the cable cars every day from dawn to late.
It was great to virtually ride the California cable car line with you. When I lived in SF, I used the Powell line a few times as it was near where I lived but never got to the California line. Besides the option of paying with a smartphone app, can one still pay for the ride the old fashioned way?
FYI Visiting the Cable Car Museum (In the Chinatown area) gives one a great overview on how the cable car functions.

I'd say it's generally less popular than the Powell lines, so yeah. You may also have better luck waiting at the Fisherman's Wharf end of the Powell lines or the Van Ness end of the California line, rather than the terminals on Market
