  • Peter thanks you, our audience, for your support, comment and stories. Wild turkeys visit the homestead and Peter begins the process of putting food down for the winter. He harvests squash, onions, peppers and carrots. He discusses food security and the practice of planting victory gardens during WWII. Before storing the carrots in the root cellar, he sorts them and stores them in peat moss (which is reused every year).
Peter then continues his construction of the outhouse by his 1700's settler's cabin. He runs into a problem fitting the door.

Thank you guys for making the videos and sharing with us. Thank your son for suggesting it! My father's family came to Virginia in the 1740's and in 1827 were pioneers in the mountains of southern West Virginia where they stayed, the original family land is still in the family. My grandparents were born in the 1880's and had 14 children live to adulthood, 11 boys 3 girls. My dad was one of the youngest, and I am the youngest grandchild born in 1979. I loved to listen to their stories, my dad and all my aunts and uncles have passed on, but in many ways until after World War II they lived in much the same way. I feel privileged to have my family's history and the stories, skills, and lessons passed down. Many folks down nowadays don't have that, I look at your channel as a way to share those skills life lessons and then history that has been lost for so many families. Because it is valuable so valuable and unfortunately so much of it has been lost. It's funny as in the last 10 or so years people start talking about homesteading gardening and canning route sellers as though these are new concepts because of that lost history that lost connection with their past. Whereas even though I was born in 1979 I was raised with much of these skills and found it strange my friends were not.

As I watched you build your outhouse, I was reminded of when I was in Viet Nam our company area was relocated in our base camp. In compensation for the inconvenience, we were built new facilities by the engineers. One new structure was a ling, narrow outhouse of sorts. But, there was a bit of miscalculation in laying it out. We ended up with 13 and a half holes. Not to worry, however. We had a young lieutenant we thought was rather half-assed. 😆

Don't believe I've commented on your videos before this. My wife and I truly enjoy your channel. I especially enjoy the historical knowledge you share. We built and lived in a log home in Missouri back in the mid to late 80's. Unlike yours, it was not built from scratch but from logs cut and hewn in Tennessee to a specific set of plans. I always had a great respect for the American and Canadian fur traders and the era in which they lived. It seemed to me the young people of today don't give that era the respect it is due. For a number of years after retirement, I tried to bring a little life to that era for our 8th graders. I'd dress the part and recount things like Coulter's run or Hugh Glass's return from near death. Have gotten a little too long in the tooth to do it now but it was enjoyable while it lasted. Anyway, thanks for the great channel and historical information.

It was a really dedicated history teacher in grade 10 that seeded my life long love of history. Like you, he put the effort into it. He some how acquired a number of WW1 uniforms and Ross rifle with firing pins removed and we filmed the battle of Vimy Ridge in the ravine behind our school. I would also area with you, that entire fir trade era is fascinating. Thanks so much for your interest.

The thing about TH-cam and our ability to actually interact with the video creators makes it seem to us viewers, as if the people we are watching are actual FRIENDS, thus we naturally share our lives and memories with 'you'. I imagine that it is somewhat different for the creators until 'you' become familiar with those responding.

i am a lazy gardener as well. i mulched heavily after planting to avoid having to hoe. i found the best way to keep carrots is to leave them in the ground. after a frost i would mulch heavily and drive a stake in the ends so i could find them in the snow. they would be firm, sweet and moist.

We did that one year but, got about a week of freezing rain followed by a lot of snow … had to use a pick axe to get them out. Your right about t the flavor though.

I absolutely adore this channel, what a find. I am super jealous of your homestead. A little tip my old carpenter father taught me for when your hammer slips of the top of the nail is to polish the head of the hammer on a piece of glasspaper. Never fails. Keep up the great work, hope that your winter months arent too harsh. Merry Christmas and a fruitful New Year.

I accidentally stumbled upon your channel today and discovered that the simple living you emulate brings the joy of life to the audience.
Your calm demeanor, appreciation of your craft, and the perfect illustration of life during the 17 century elevate your videos to the highest level among the other TH-cam videos. Thank you for providing the joy one needs in this irate life.

    Hi Cathy and Peter!
Congratulations on making it an entire year with posting your video stories and I’m proud to say that I’ve been watching for 8 of this months. I once lived in a mountain top cabin in New York’s Adirondack Mountains when I operated one of the state’s forest fire lookout towers. As a history buff re-playing many of your videos is a happy place for me as well.
My mother and grandmother often talked about their trials to survive during the Great Depression and rationing during World War II. My grandfather had a half an acre of land that he gardened for vegetables and mom often said that most of the meat on the supper table was what one of my uncles shot on the hill behind the house or the fish they would catch from the creek.
While watching your videos it struck me that nothing has really changed from the 1750s up until today. People need to eat and they must preserve what they grow or gather from the land. Sure the technology has improved by leaps and bounds, but preserving food and the way it is done is basically still the same. Yes that sounds quite simplified although the essence of the task certainly remains the same.
Thank you for your channel and for going through the tremendous effort to share your knowledge with us all.

Your right Bill, not much has changed in our needs but, so much has changed in how we acquire them. I’m a firm believer that all high school aged children should have a mandatory common sense course, even if it is a few hours in length … things like soil science, propagation etc. Thanks for your interest.

I trace one ancestor to the early 1800's. By 1830 he and his family along with several other relations lived in a log cabin or a framed dwelling (not sure which), at least ten individuals, I wonder how they managed. Watching your site helps to give me some idea, but I imagine their home was a bit bigger.

    • @TheWoodlandEscape
      @TheWoodlandEscape  ปีที่แล้ว

Historically the first homes were quite small. Straw sleeping pallets were rolled out at night and then stored away to make space for the day.

Your channel so interesting! I have seen all your films. Have you ever thinking about building a sauna? The Finns who immigrated to North America build the sauna at first... But the most of them moved in 1800 and beginning of 1900. My uncle that i have never met moved to Canada. Keep on good work. Gr. Jukka Nordman from Northern Finland

Excellent video today. I am always amazed at your wife's steady hand behind the camera. The volume was loud enough and your history lessons were very clear and enjoyable to hear. The volume on the music was perfect and I love to hear that particular music by Richard and Al, as you noted. Looking forward to the next episodes. :)
