I think the reason I like this album so much is because of the catchy pop sounds to it. It has a cool mix of folk, pop, and rock. I hate it when my two besties say it sounds like elevator music😒 The chain is so much fun! The end of it gives me goosebumps each time I listen to it

Once you get to know Fleetwood Mac, you will get to know how good this album really is, and how the fact the band was literally broken and nobody was speaking to each other when this was made

  • @alexdixon4856

The context that allowed me to love this album is to see it as the quintessential breakup album.
The two couples in the band at the time (Buckingham/Nicks & McVie/McVie) were both in the midst of splitting up during the sessions for this album and the music documents that.
It has the optimism and excitement of new beginnings (Don't Stop, You Make Loving Fun), the sadness of endings (Gold Dust Woman, Oh Daddy) and the push and pull between the acceptance, bargaining, longing and bitterness of both (The Chain, Songbird).
The album is beautiful to me not in spite of its simplicity but because of it, it takes complicated and sometimes contradictory emotions and distills them into simple perfect capsules of pop songwriting.
Hope in a couple of listens when you've sat with it a little you'll vibe with it a little more.
Sending good vibes to you and your family in the midst of the loss of your job. Love your content, keep up the good work!

    "Mom rock" LOL
I didn't expect you to react to this album. I remember listening to 'Rumours' for the very first time three or four years algo, and I was like "It's OK... but it won't change My Life".
In 2018 I had a crush with another bearded pal who broke My Heart, and... well... I don't know why, but I checked out this album again... and You know? "The Chain" became my favourite Fleetwood Mac song. It was my most played song on Spotify, indeed. Since then I started to get along with 'Rumours' and Fleetwood Mac themselves.
This is absolutely a "Break Up" album. When you know the context of its recording, maybe you'll get its vibe and it'll grow on you as it did to me.
Fleetwood Mac started as a blues band. In fact, it was formed in UK in the middle 60's. Their lead guitarist, Peter Green, left the band after struggling with a sort of mental issue. So Fleetwood Mac was about to split up until Mick Fleetwood (drummer/founding member) met American duo Lindsay Buckingham (guitar/vocals) and Stevie Nicks (vocals) and invited them to join him and the rest of the band.
That's how Fleetwood Mac went from British blues to American soft rock. The blues version of the band wrote "Black Magic Woman" (yes, Santana's version is a cover).
The pop rock era of Fleetwood Mac is their most successful thanks to their self-titled 10th album and 'Rumours'. Some conservative fans of 60's Fleetwood Mac think the British-American version it's just another band.
In fact, Peter Green passed away a couple weeks ago.
To be honest, I'd been reluctant to explore Fleetwood Mac stuff for years, as I'm not a huge fan of soft rock, but I hooked up with 'Rumours' and that's how I showed interest in further stuff by FM.
I know well this album sounds quite old-fashioned, but there's no doubt it has a special vibe. No wonder this "americanised" version of Fleetwood Mac remains relevant.
There's an indie tribute album to Fleetwood Mac featuring HAIM, Tame Impala, Washed Out, MGMT, The Kills and others. It was released in 2012, Guess so.

Hey Alex if you’re going to do more “commonly accepted “( didn’t want the use the term “‘mainstream”))classic albums how bout:
Astral Weeks/ Moondance : Van Morrison
Abbey Road/ white album/ revolver: Beatles
Blood on the Tracks/ Highway 61 /blonde on blonde: Dylan
    Horses: Patti Smith
The Band/ music from the big pink : The Band
    Love: Forever Changes
    Primal Scream: Screamadelica
    Carole King: Tapestry
    Nick Drake: Pink Moon
    Wings: Band on the Run
    Beach Boys: Pet Sounds
George Harrison: All things must pass
Exile on Main Street/ sticky fingers: Stones
    John Lennon: Plastic Ono Band
    Just for starters...
I’ve purposely left off heavy rock ( Hendrix/who/zeppelin) , soul / funk/ jazz/ “fusion”( Marvin Gaye / Stevie wonder/ miles Davis/ steely Dan) and punk ( pistols/ clash etc) as I know they’re not your cup of hot chocolate so listed some of the more “ songwritery “ and trad rock types( except Primal Scream) ....👍

I have nothing to say about Rumours other than I get why a lot of people love it.
It's interesting to hear your thoughts on some of these heavy-hitters that were made before you were born.
The best thing I like so far is that you don't feel pressured to praise albums such as this and Dark Side of the Moon, even though they are accepted as classics. The whole point is that this is YOUR reaction and you cannot be wrong about your opinion. It may change over time, but your thoughts are the focus of all this.
I've also noticed that you often like tracks that you have heard before, so familiarity with a song is definitely important for you. You don't tend to rant about the merits of a song on your first listen.

There's another side to the year 1977. Sex Pistols Nevermind The Bullocks dropped at the beginning of the year, The Clash's 1st album, Television Marquee Moon, David Bowie Low and the edgy but palatable My Aim Is True from Elvis Costello. Music was changing and becoming more aggressive - which is closer to my heart. But like you said, nothing wrong with this album

I can appreciate this album more now. It’s a well crafted pop rock album and I especially like the harder rocking tunes.
When it was released it was the epitome , a long with bands like The Eagles, of mainstream rock. I hated this music at the time, over played and over produced,Probably pushed me in the direction punk , post punk and new wave.

LOL. dead end job and lotto tickets. This is certainly not an album I'd ever thought you would do. It is of another time. This is the year long haired rock met the snarl of early punk. This is my senior year in high school, but by then the Ramones, Blondie and Television had come out. Yes, Mom rock. If it weren't for Lindsey Buckingham, they would have continued to make soft blues rock, without any umph. Lindsey's arrangements are what give the other songwriters tunes any small amount of edge. Don't Stop was so popular, but I'm with you on the smooth/bland opinion. Heck, Clinton used it for his presidential theme song.
What happened next is the album many fans hated, but in the long run was the album that was more relevant. That album is Tusk. Lindsey chopped his hippie locks, had dove into Talking Heads, Devo, etc. and tried to push the rest of them out of their comfort zone. Camper Van Beethoven did the entire album as a cover piece. Most folks will give Tusk, the double album of erratic, all over the place, cocaine fueled madness, as the mark of FM greatness. The album didn't sell well, so they returned to pure soft bliss pop. Try a listen
