I loved your reaction and well thought out interpretation of this great song. Thanks!⬅️
One element which is hard to catch on one's initial watch is that they had 2.5 beat boxers for this. The one you caught was Adam Rupp (Adam) who did the harmonica and drums. He gets an extra half because at some points the production layered his harmonica and drums. Normally a singer, Adam Chance (Chance) was the other beat boxer here. He was doing the jaw harp, which is dominant at the opening and ending, but present for almost the whole song.

Home Free does not use any instrument. Except when they are collaborating with other artists and then they will show you the instrument. They did use instruments in a song they wrote for a video game. But they show the instruments in the video. The first singer you saw was Austin Brown, but he has left the group to spend more time at home and raise a family 😊😊 He has been replaced by Adam Bastien the rest of the group are
    Rob Lundquist tenor 2
    Adam Chance Baritone
    Tim Foust Bass

I enjoyed your reaction. Southern blues, like all blues, is about dealing with sadness and loss. At the same time it represents the pain, it uses the vehicle of music to uplift the listener and the musician. This is why the music can be upbeat and in some blues the lyrics are purposely funny.

Home Free. With this song they've turned me into a man of constant listening.
I like how you react to the lyrics of the song. There are so many reactions out there which do not take into account the lyrics. And even of the few ones which do (at least among those I'm aware of), you were the first to remark the glint of hope at the end of the song.
If you want to go over more songs of Home Free I recommend 'Folsom Prison Blues' (there is a deep note in here that goes right down to the center of the earth) and 'Do You Hear What I Hear?' (normally, I detest christmas songs, but this performance is just gorgeous!)

Love seeing folks encountering Home Free for the first time...To all new to the group, I like to share a summary that I read on another reactors post...AND, I am Subbing due to this reaction:
The group started in 2001 by brothers Chris and Adam Rupp They won The Sing Off season 4 2013 that's where they became very popular. They are the only country A Capella ( all vocals no instruments)group but they are honestly do so so much more than just country music they can sing any genre and they do. There is no Lead singer in the group. They each ( except Adam )sing the song and who’s ever voice or voices sound right for the song gets the lead unless is a bass/ baritone song then that’s Tim or Chance. A lot of time they each have a part in the song. Fans of Home Free are known as Home Fries and are very loyal to the guys. Adam Rupp: Beatboxer Extraordinaire ( 41) can make any sound imaginable (A whole drum kit, harmonica (his Nomonica we call it )plane flyovers, trains, castanets, bugs ,birds etc).Co founder from Mankato Minnesota. Rob Lundquist :Lead tenor(beard and glasses) ( 40 )very soulful voice and master whistler from Minneapolis, Minnesota Tim Foust :Bass (had long dark hair now short with grey ) ( 42 ) 5+ octave range can go so low he blows speakers or sky high from Nederland, Texas Austin Brown: High Tenor ( Long wavy hair )( 37 ) voice of an angel from Tifton Georgia. Adam Chance(Aka Chance):Baritone/Bass ( 39 ) deep, rich voice(Does the juice harp sound in Man Of Constant Sorrow) has short dark hair short beard from Baldwin County, Alabama. Replaced Chris Rupp ( Adams Brother and co founder in 2016) They have collaborated with many singers and legends Don McLean: American Pie Oak Ridge Boys: Elvira Kenny Rodgers: Children Go Where I Send Thee (Please watch the end message) Billy Gilman: One Voice Alabama: Christmas In Dixie Mark Wills: Don’t Laugh At Me ( important message at the end ) Lee Greenwood & US Airforce Band: God Bless The USA Any many more. They have 3 amazing songwriters in the group Tim, Austin and Chance So they have a very large playlist of covers and original songs End of the Road (Boyz 2 Men cover ) When A Loves A Woman Helplessly Hoping (5 part harmony masterpiece ) Unchained Melody Butts Medley/ Remix Listen To The Music Can’t Outrun You Brothers In Arms Stargazer Trilogy( All Originals written by Austin) Give Me A Sign ( Chapter 1) Stargazer Lilies( Chapter 2) MR (Chapter 3) Skull And Bones ( original written by Chance for Ubisoft new video game Skull And Bones) Might As Well Be Me ( Original) Playing With Fire ( Original) Remember My Name (Original) Oh Pretty Woman Life Is A Highway Stand By Me Cruise I Want Crazy Christmas In LA ( Newest Release Mayday(DON’T WATCH TILL YOU ARE VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE GROUP AND THEIR RANGES ) There's not a song that you pick from their 200+ catalog that is bad I haven't found one yet. They are just funny, down to earth, humble really nice guys. They are the best A Cappella group there is IMO Sorry for the long read

The song was a hit in the American movie "O Brother, Where art thou?" The film is set in rural Mississippi in 1937, and it follows three escaped convicts searching for hidden treasure while a sheriff relentlessly pursues them. Its story is a modern satire which, while incorporating social features of the American South, is loosely based on Homer's epic Greek poem The Odyssey.

I believe this very old folk song was inspired by a letter written by a captured and perhaps wounded confederate solder during the American civil war. He was writing home to his fiancee. The Northern Railroad he speaks of the trip to a northern prison. Many wounded would not survive the trip. He is expecting death and tells his lover to find another and live a happy life. And he will reunite with her in heaven. It's a sad song indeed.

The song is attributed to Dick Burnett, who published it in 1913. Some say it's as much as 200 years older. Concensus is that it's the countries oldest breakup song. Either from Kentucky or a girl.

Actually, the song was written in 1913, and covered by many groups. The version you're referring to was popularized by a movie titled: "Oh Brother Where Art Tho"...
