Lexus Engine Replacement

- Here's how to replace an engine on a Lexus ES350 or Toyota Camry with the 3.5L V6 engine!
The engine in this vehicle likely skipped timing and caused the valves and pistons to collide. Bent valves will cause a loss of compression and require an engine rebuild. In this video, the engine was swapped out for another used engine.
Key items for an engine replacement include the removal of the axle, suspension, exhaust, flex plate bolts and bell housing bolts from underneath. Inside the engine bay, all the wires and hoses are disconnected, air box, battery tray, radiator and engine mounts removed. A Toyota 2GR 3.5L engine (with the transaxle assembly) can be lifted out the top of the engine bay in the sedans, but may not clear the windshield cowl in the Sienna, Highlander or RX350.
Stay tuned for the full engine teardown and analysis of the failed engine!

"While we're in there" is sometimes almost as costly, if not more so, as the planned repair. Gotta love car repair.
Exactly!
I was glad the timing cover or rear seals weren't leaking on the new engine. Just dropped it right in
@@speedkar99 question is for ho much time they ain't leaking yet?
10000%✓✓
@speedkar99 Great video sir! I was curious as to how long it actually took you to get the engine out ? Also what lift point did you use on the drivers side? I'm actually thinking about tackling this job on my sons 08. The heater core busted and my son overheated the engine. I've already done the heater core and evap so far in this process.
I'm not doing the work and when I saw the engine out, I started panicking thinking how on earth does someone know how to put everything back together and not have a fistful of bolts left over at the end. Great work!
If you have experience, no big deal, you recognize most of the stuff, for the more complex, take a photo. If you are not experienced, then photos, videos and labeled boxes for the fasteners and parts are your best friends.
I've done lots of jobs. I still draw on a blue shop towel with a sharpie to list out which bolts go where & how many there are, plus which electrical connectors I need to remember to re-attach. I almost never need it, but I think I only remember where stuff goes because I write it down.
The bolts that don't thread back into their spot get labelled and go into a box.
My experience with cars helped alot though.
Take all the cardboard boxes the parts came in, break them down into one flat board each. Now take a sharpie, write down which portion/component of the car you’re doing, and shove the bolts you’ve taken out through the cardboard. Label them as you go, and arrange the bolts in the order they came out.
the brownish or goldish colors are the easiest to maintain. similar color as the dust...you dont have to wash it as much as the other colors
Exactly!!!!! Grandpa Gold for the win!!!
Yeah but it's not appealing to me. Silver or gray would be better than gold.
GIrlfriend has an '07 Camry with this motor, I actually love the 2gr. Sounds great, efficient, and the power output is awesome. I'm a Honda guy but definitely grew a soft spot for that car.
It sure has decent power!
U make it look so easy! I think it's a beautiful car! U should have NO PROBLEM selling it. Detailing it really was icing on the cake! U are very thorough in your work replacing suspension parts while in there. 👍✊🖖🇺🇸
Thanks! I hope I can enjoy it for a bit before selling.
Yep.great job doné,.
I'm Just patiently wàiting for the 2GR series teardown, just like you have instructed 💯💪🏼
Coming soon! I have 30 days to return the core...
I am just in awe of your talent. Just thinking about remembering where all of those pieces go back together during re-install hurts my head. Great job!
When you work on cars you have a general idea of where things go...the bolts I put back where they came from, a few I labeled and a few you just know where they go
Man, you really know your stuff. Another great video, making it look easy!
It wasn't easy, just alot of pieces to put together.
I've owned a car with that engine for 4 years and obsessively done research on it to be proactive (Timing Cover Leak, VVTi rattle, weak water pump etc) but this is the first time I'm ever seeing this kind of failure. Their timing chains are beefy as hell. Great video as usual!
I opened the engine. It wasn't the chain that slipped, it's the gear's bolts that backed off, causing it to disconnect from the camshaft.
I live in Scotland and the car models are different here compared to there, but I still enjoy watching your videos , and I find them very interesting and learn from them to. I own a skoda octavia mk2 with ea888gen2 1.8 turbo petrol engine. Here in the UK ,the government are introducing a ULEZ ( ultra low emissions zone) scheme ( I hate it ). My car is euro 5 emissions, and will comply ( at the moment). Desiel engines euro 6 or more ,petrol euro 4 or more, in order to comply with these emission zones ( at the time of writing, at the moment), in cities, including the city i live in ..
If not compliant, then £12.50 charge. If don't pay charges, then fined. my car is compliant ( at the moment), so I'm keeping it( for now). I like it anyway. I'm getting the engine overhauled, to get rid of excessive oil consumption problems( poor oil control ring design on piston rings , so upgrading them )and upgrading the hydraulic timing chain tensioner. I've put it into a garage to do the work on it. I reckon 2nd hand petrol cars of that type will be in more demand now, and value will go up. So I reckon me investing money into getting its engine overhauled is worth it.
( most Desiel cars before 2015 won't comply)
I am looking forward to more of your videos 😀👍
( I remember you dismantling one of these engines in one of your earlier videos... ea888gen2 engine....though it may of been the 2litre)
( my car has aprox 107 000 miles on odometer , it burned something like a litre of oil within 200/300 miles sometimes. Because it burned so much oil the spark plugs would fowl up and misfire after about 6 weeks of being replaced. So it was time to get the oil consumption problem fixed. If the hydraulic timing chain tensioner failed it would wreck the engine...interference fit combustion chamber. So that will need upgrading to. If I were to change my car, I'd get virtuality nothing for it in return, but they would sell it ,for the same amount of money I'd paid for it 4 and half years ago, because of the increase in demand for 2nd hand petrol ulez compliant cars. The non compliant cars will be worth virtuality nothing now. I cannot afford an electric car, or a new euro 6 or 7 car, so i will keep the car I have, for now. I really like it anyway. It is great to drive. Needs oil problems and timing chain tensioner sorting out)
The powers that be are also introducing 15 minute cities ( 15 min prisons or ghettos where nobody is allowed to drive, and cannot leave the 15 min city without asking for permission . They introduced a blanket 20mph speed limits( which will actually increase pollution because engine is on longer, for less distance covered compared to 30 mph, so it's basically a lot of nonsense),in all built up areas. They are jacking up fuel and energy costs to cripple motorists and wage a war on motorists, humanity, to take away personal freedoms and to imprison and enslave humanity. They also want to impose a charge by mile system to rip us off even more. Only the rich will be able to afford personal transport
The highway code has been revised and introduced stupid new regulations , to make driving unbearably difficult, to put poeple off driving. They cut funding for road repairs so that roads deteriorate to point where they wreck car suspensions and tyres. The road drainage systems are not repaired, so flooding is a serious problem now. They systematically demonise motoring and make us out to be the bad guys for driving our own cars for our own personal freedoms.
There are allegedly protests against all of these new rules and regulations that are designed to destroy our freedoms, but unfortunately they are just a waste of time and effort. Absolutely nothing could be done to get rid of them. There are here, they are going to stay and there is nothing we can do about it. We just have to grin and bare it.
I hope things are better where you are.
Glad you enjoyed my video!
Nice looking car.
It always amazes me how you can remember where all the parts go when you reassemble.
The vacuum hoses were where I struggled a bit but a check engine light quickly reminded me where lol
Executed like a true surgeon 💪🏼💯
Thanks!
My dad and I rebuilt the Transmission in my RX300. We dropped the subframe with the transmission, why leaving the engine in the car. It wasn't too bad. We just had jackstands and a jack. Runs and drives great now. Don't want to do that again though. That was rough. It took us almost a month due to my fibromyalgia. I can only work so long per day.
I did the same on a Camry. Dropped the subframe and transmission using jacks. Not easy.
I'm still just so impressed with you.
Thanks
You really are an expert at what you do and you deserve every dollar you earn!
Thanks.
You make to look so simple, but in reality is a lot of work. Nice job 👍
It sure is alot of work. A giant puzzle
Thank you for taking the time to record this one.
You are welcome.
What a complete boss. That looked easy but i bet it was a complete nightmare. Awsome video man.
Thanks!
Was impressed with your knowledge. I like the gold color.
Thanks.
Not a fan of gold, although my gray cars are nothing to boast about either 😂
A whole lot of work surprises you did it solo
I did it myself! I'm proud and happy it's done. Lots of challenges
Understand late night by the light of the "whatever". The sacrifice of time is worth the satisfaction of a job well done. I see Murphy's Law came into being, as usual, with a large job. Kinda freaky when your seeing smoke rolling out from the lubricants used. Kinda make's that gut tighten. Surprise no "blood sacrifice or none you shared. Like all the others have said. Great job, appreciate taking us along.
Thanks. Satisfaction is what motivates me.
Great to see you getting a vehicle running
Me too! Thanks
The nice thing about that colour is that itdoesn't show summer dirt very much. :)
Great videos, more! :)
Yeah its a pretty clean color but suits an older personality
These guy has TALENT!!!
It's just unbolting a giant puzzle
The poor ES 350 got a new heart❤ Yeah! I love this colour
Yep it runs great now
Toronto? I didn't think you were a fellow Canadian!
Yes I'm sure you can hear the airplanes in the background of my videos from Pearson Airport
an absolute legends, thanks !!
Welcome
Great video as always! Can't wait 'till the teardown
Thanks.
That's this weekend's project
My 08 ES350 is at 330,000kms and climbing. I like that Gold/Brown color with black leather. Noice!!
Thanks.
Wow. That's amazing....you really know your stuff.....great video, keep em coming
Next up... tearing down the old engine
I saw you on the Lexus es page on Facebook. Didn’t know this was your car what a small world
Well hello!
I should cross post this there then
"Lexus Camry", tres drole! Awesome work dude
Thanks
Bravo, well done keep videos like this coming👏💪
Thank you 🙌
Love the Toyota 2GR-FKS, I have 2 vehicles powered by them
FKS has been a little spotty ...they switched to plastic valve covers and direct+port injection
@@speedkar99 I think the D4-S is a good thing, I’d prefer not to have plastic valve covers though. What issues have you experienced? I’m sure the front timing cover could still leak in really higher mileages
As always, I really appreciate the effort you put into making this video and sharing.
You are welcome.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ your work- video editing perfection!!!!
Thanks
Best video so far....
Really? Out of my 200+ videos 🤐
Awesome video, thanks. You sounded a bit surprised when it started up the first time.
I actually was. Didn't think it was gonna actually start first shot
Well done, love it. Will use it for motivation for my own small repairs to tackle lol👍
"small" repairs lol
@@speedkar99 yeah yeah I made that mistake. Aint no such thing lol. Spent the entire day fixing some rust spots on my car only to find more as I went🤦♂️
The dreaded hidden transmission bolt! Don’t you hate it!
Hated that. Costed me hours
What a great video that engine is bullet proof
Well, this engine is. The old one...not so much. I think the leak made it run out of oil.
@@speedkar99 thats true oil leaks can be deadly, we are currently doing an engine overhaul on our car as well.
You make it look easy awesome job
I liked this video, hence i'm requesting more, thank you!
More to come!
Love all these videos you put out man!
Glad you like them!
I like the color
😞
عمل جيد أحسنت بارك الله فيك
Great work speedkar! Making a pain in the but repair seem like a 12min pain in a butt!
Yeah it was a few long days but I'm happy I got it done and it perrs nicely
I'm learning so much. Thank you as always.
I learned alot here too
That color is nice. Good job!
Not a fan of the color. Drives smooth though.
Made it look easy...
It's not hard. Just a giant puzzle.
I kinda pushed to finish this within the week or so but could have taken my time, but then I'd loose interest lol
Like the kar fix videos but need more scarcasm
Sarcasm is for the review videos
so exciting!
It was satisfying to see it run
That was great man. impressiive you managed it in like 2 days.
Also. beige is. meh. BUT! you can choose to keep it and rock the beige as a statment of irony :-)
2 days on video, almost 2 weeks in real life haha
Awesome videos I really enjoy them keep them coming
Thanks
Great video!
Thanks
Very good effort. I am impressed !
Thanks
Really enjoyed this video!
Thanks
Awesome video man!!! And I honestly don't think that color on that Lexus,is all that bad!!! It COULD be WORSE (like WHITE!) Lol. Anyway,Always enjoy watching your videos!!! : >)
My wife really wants a white Lexus
LOL. Of course @@speedkar99
Big job
It sure was. But worth it.
2GR-FE is huge. This is the only video I found that it is lifted FROM TOP. Is it possible to lift it from a 2010-2015 RX350?
No. On the SUVs and vans the cowl goes over the top and makes it more tighter.
Hell yeah! Engine swap!
Yep! And teardown video coming soon to see what caused this mess
Time to put a car hoist on your Christmas list
I'd love that
Probably been said before, but you REALLY should hook up with THE CAR CARE NUT !
That would be great but he's 10 hours drive away in Chicago land
Good flip,tough job.
Hopefully I can sell it soon.
This guy would make an excellent neighbor.
Wow.
Gotta be Brampton, Toronto, Mississauga maybe, based on the Canadian accent...
Am I right?
Yeah
As you probably hear in the videos, I'm right next to Canada's largest airport 🛩️
I knew it!!!!
Lol.
I'm in Kitchener Waterloo.
Great work.
Thanks!
An engine swap without a single swear word? Impossible.
It went fairly smoothly. The pain points were getting the transmission off and back on.
I had the exact same car but I lost it in a roll over accident 😢 mechanically it was an amazing car..if you get in an accident not so much. None of the airbags deployed
Wow !
P R O F E S S I O N A L ... You make it look very easy
Thanks.
Easy but very tedious
nice job!! replace that radiator! the upper neck is all brittle
Radiator looks like it may have been replaced. I cleaned it out really good though. Inside and out.
@@speedkar99 when the upper neck turns all brown where the hose goes on it, its brittle and will break. slide your hose back and look carefully. typically at the 10 year mark you need to start looking closely at them. they will split and break.
I always wanted to take out my old volvos engine just to clean it. I am going to find some time to do it.
Forever.
The good thing is all that oil prevented the subframe to rust out
Agreed! There isn't rust under this car at all.
sounds great!
Thanks
nice work great car for someone.
It sure would.
Very good.
Many many thanks
I remembered long time ago where you removed the engine from the corolla.
Ah yeah that was 2017
Great video. What year and how many kilometers. How much you ask for. Thanks again!
2007 ES350 with 213,000km
Send me an Instagram message if interested. Thanks
Impressive skills! I would pass on that color as well...there was so much metallic brown & beige in that era, never really did it for me.
Agreed....it's a clean color but not my type.
Man if i lived around your location i would make you my personal mechanic for my cars
Nah I'm not a mechanic. I don't work on other people's cars. Too much liability.
“Didnt break or strip any bolts… yet”
🤐🤐
Is this the same engine as a Toyota Sienna 2nd gen?
Yea from 2007 up
Just another great educative video. Can you help me have some engines from junkyard for export to Africa?
Thanks.
Contact LKQ, that's where I got mine from.
That was a lot of work. How much did the salvage engine cost to buy? You live in Toronto...we are practically neighbors.
$1800 from LKQ
@@speedkar99 That's not bad. Seems like a reasonable price
"I just gotta remove....." *YIKES ! ! !*
Good job! Love your videos.
Thanks. I like Lexus cars
yeah those gr series is on the goliath side compared to its older bro mz ...
They sure are. The MZ engines just feel more solid though..
Great Video!! Did you have to replace the steering wheel buttons? If so can you please link it?
Yes I got it from Amazon $30
Thanks!@@speedkar99
i have a question for both of you, i have a 2nd generation lexus is350 (2006-2012) and i want to install the 3rd generation lexus engine is350,(2014-2020) would this work
Fastest swap ever
Haha
I'm sure with help I could have done in a day or two
😊 👍
Notification SQUAD!!🔥🔥🔥
Hello
@@corglass hello there!✌️
Thanks!!
Hi
What caused this loud rattle? Vvti? 2grfe is an awesome motor but I’m questioning its reliability after all these videos I see. I have one In my 230k mile 07avalon, got me nervous 😢
Pistons hitting the valves. Watch my last shorts video
Do hybrid services too
⚡⚡⚡
Some engine lift hooks would have come in handy - too bad only Hyundai-Kias have those...😅
Agreed!!!
can you do more diesel engines teardowns?
Mercedes
Toyota
If I can get them...
I forgot your from Toronto
Yeah I am right near the airport as you can hear in my videos
What's the reason that the timing chain skip teeth?
So it didn't skip teeth...the gear itself lost its bolts and was freewheeling
Nice work! How many km on the clock?
213,000km
Now it feels like the universe is messing with me. Because I'm actively looking for this generation ES350 near my area 😂
Well If you're in the Toronto area and Interested let me know
@@speedkar99 unfortunately, I'm in America, close to the southern portion
Color reminds me of my grandma's 1995 Toyota Camry only darker. Different color would've been worth it
Agreed. I probably would have kept it
I still have 2 of them. Both wagon models. 94 and 95. Loved first one so much I went to CA and drove home another one. 2400 miles. People thought I was nuts. They're right. Absolutely the best grocery getter around. stayed away from the 6cyl and was best decision ever. reliable as the day is long.
