    The thing is, if you don't have a car, you probably have no way to get to work, which means you have no job and no money to use an app to schedule a ride. When I was young, nobody hired me until I had a car. One of the questions employers ask is, "Do you have reliable transportation?" aka do you own a car? I live in a big city, you can't use public transportation in a timely manner here. You simply must have your own car. So how did I get my car? My uncle gave his old car to my mom, and I get her old car, then I got a job.

    • @tinkthestrange
      @tinkthestrange 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You should start trying to get more funds allocated to public transportation in your city. That helps everybody. Cities say they can’t expand public transportation because nobody uses it, but nobody uses it because they don’t have enough transportation, going to enough places at reasonable times

    • @SpeedDemonExpress
      @SpeedDemonExpress 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @tinkthestrange No. We have lot's of city busses and a light rail. Public transportation doesn't work well enough to be practical. I used it when I was in high school. It was awful, unreliable, and sometimes dangerous. The busses are slow, break down all the time, and you have to wait 30 mins to an hour for one to arrive and you may need to do that multiple times between routes. The rail only has one route. And if you need to go across the city it will literally take you half of the day just to go on a one-way trip with public transportation. Public transportation only works well enough in compact cities like NYC, and NYC has problems now. You simply must have a car.

    The thing that's sad is unless you have missed a prior court date. They will usually reschedule the date or if they don't reschedule the court data they will place a bench warrant out on you but have it noted that the court doesn't want this person arrested because they informed the court of the absence before hand. I know I've had to do that a couple of times.

    This reminds me of something that happened years ago. There was a guy on probation for various charges like B&E, theft, GTA, drugs, etc etc. well there was a big multi day concert festival event out of state he wanted to go to badly. So the dude stole a car and drove all the way to the event. Once he gets there he brings more attention to himself by breaking into other people's cars, tents, RVs, etc etc stealing money, drugs, food, event merchandise. I forgot what happened to the dude but I think he got kicked out of the event area and stranded out of State violating his probation big time. The reason why he was stranded because he couldn't get to the car he stole and a big group of event goers beat the crap out of that car. All the windows busted out, panels beaten in, parts ripped off, ran into by other vehicles, and flipped over on its roof. Of coarse everyone there at that time didn't know that bro guy stole that car and it belong to someone else.

    I got some speeding ticket a long time ago that for some reason I had to show up to the court due to some box the officer checked I guess. Like you said, I was dressed in my clean uniform for work, sat quietly until they called me, was honest with the judge, and he knocked it down to five over from what ever it was (probably the maximum of 20/25+.)
    That's when I learned that it isn't like a normal television court. It's more like the DMV, and they probably deal with such crap all day that they have no problem moving the respectful and polite people through quickly.

    • @nickdubil90
      @nickdubil90 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      It's pretty true. If you present well and are truthful about the small things, you usually get a good result.
      I had a particularly BAD speeding ticket in a county I don't live in but drive through regularly. I was young and dumb at the time, and I was probably going over 110mph. To be fair, it was on a large, multi-lane highway that is in the hills and was nearly empty at the time. Anyways, I get written up for ~95, or whatever the limit at the time was just underneath Reckless Driving charges. I ended up moving apartments shortly after. Never got a ticket in the mail at my new address, even though I changed it with the DMV.
      Almost 5 years later, I had an officer come into my work, a chill guy, but he let me know I had a bench warrant. I wasn't arrested, but I was essentially "served" with a new court date. I had almost forgotten about the incident, and I assumed that the original officer had just made a big show of things in order to "scare me straight" (he did, at the time he was writing the ticket, make a big show about how many stupid kids he had seen brutally killed or dismembered after driving the way I was.) I go to the new court date, dressed well and on-time.
      The public defender I met with briefly before going to the judge suggested I might be able to get the ticket quashed on the grounds of "due process", that it had taken unreasonably long to get this infraction in front of a court, and I had NOT been avoiding the court or concealing my address or information. I went with this option, and wouldn't you know, the judge considered it briefly and dismissed the ticket.
      I considered myself lucky for this outcome, and I don't drive like a maniac anymore (I'm 33).

We live about 20 miles on the other side of Pawnee and got to Stillwater all the time. We have a bet on who among us know him. And we have a winner a cousin of my babys mama know the yo-yo. If it wasn't your doing the story just won her 300 dollars. 😊😊😊

    Those "Heads Up" type phone calls make a world of difference. Being a former landlord - A simple phone call/text saying you will be late on rent makes is huge. It was the difference of me chasing you down everyday until we had answers and a plan to have rent paid or you calling and telling me you will be late and you will have it by X date. I know I didn't enjoy chasing people down but I had to by any means calls, texts, emails, calling friends and family, inspections, showing up and knocking at random times including weekends and eventually evictions. If you told me rent was going to be late, it made life so much easier for both of us.

    The person who left the truck unlocked and engine running should be charged with "Stupidity." No, the truck wasn't left running because the starter was bad. Per the news reports, it was a new truck owned by medical transportation non-profit company LifeNet Health who keep their vehicles well maintained.

    30 minute drive is likely a 4 hour walk. I wonder why he did not start walking? I understand he might not have money for a Uber, or a taxi. I wonder if he has some sort of executive function disorder, or social anxiety that kept him from calling.
    I picture people I know who would face issues with the system because they would not be able to navigate the rules and norms.

    Something similar happened years ago in Vancouver BC. Guy was in court about an excessively loud car stereo while driving. The stereo was reportedly so loud that it would drown out conversations of people in offices multiple stories above the street.
    Because of how unusual the case was, and an epidemic of excessively loud car stereos at the time, news crews were on scene for when the defendant arrived at the courthouse. Police ran the license plate on the vehicle he was on camera driving as he arrived at the courthouse.
    It was a stolen vehicle.
    I think this happened in the 1990s, but please don't quote me on that.

    Nearly 50 years ago, in my local town, a man appeared in court charged with driving while disqualified. He was found guilty, fined and his ban extended. He left the court, and drove away in his car. The police officer who had given evidence against him had arrived by bicycle, but gave chase. A mile later, stuck in traffic, guy was arrested again, and walked the mile back to court, with the policeman on his bicycle, presented to the same judge, and given a short jail sentence. Caught by a policeman on a bicycle. There's shame.

    What else could be done similar to this?
    It might be apocryphal, but I once read a short anecdote about a thief burglarising a place and stealing many items, including an expensive double-breasted suit.
    He appeared in court... _in that very double-breasted suit!_

    I set up my freinds kid with a button up shirt and a tie. He was the only person in the dock appropriately dressed. The judge said, "You're the only person in the dock dressed appropriately." Sentenced him to the minimum, suspended for 6 months. He got his life together. I never got my shirt back.

    A neighboring TWP. Fire Station just had one of their EMS ambulances stolen from the Station's bay yesterday. It's a volunteer dept. and the chief got a notice when the bay door opened so he went to look. They were able to track everywhere it went before finding it abandoned. This station is less than 5 miles from my home. Police speculated that the thieves may have been looking for drugs but couldn't say for certain.

    This doesn't justify stealing a car, obviously, but you'd be surprised how difficult some courts make themselves to contact via phone. There is one in particular near me that is only open 3 days a week, doesn't even answer the phones sometimes on days it IS open, doesn't return voicemails, changes its open days every other week, oh and has court sessions on its off-days so you can't even contact them to request an adjournment because there are no people answering the phones on those days.

    And I have seen firsthand how the courts here are total aholds towards people. It's wintertime and way below 0 outside, someone calls saying they are living out of town, none of their vehicles want to start, court says you better get here. Another person in jail, jail taking those into court, he tries to go, oh your court date for what we arrested you for is tomorrow, but I have a court date today for something else, too bad. When he finally is in court the judge asks why he didn't show up that day, he tells the judge he was in jail and they wouldn't let him go to court. Judge claims they would t do that and throws another charge on him. The legal system here is corrupt, I even know someone that paid a bribe to get his charges dropped. It's all about money here, not justice.

    Regarding car theft. Hypothetically, what if a guy stranded you and your buddy at a bar, but left his car and you knew that he used a screwdriver to start his car, so you and your buddy "stole" his car and drove it back to the bar you all 3 had originally left from and where your car was parked. Is that really car theft, especially if the other guy doesn't report it? And hypothetically alcohol was involved.

    More power to the guy guess what he took properly that we taxpayers pay for and use it for something that does actually have a legitimate reason because if he didn't make it to court he's going to be screwed by the courts. It's important that I believe it's $63 a day for every day you're in jail in Oklahoma that you are billed

    The article I read said it was LIfenet Emergency Services SUPERVISOR'S truck. So, not quite the same as stealing an actual ambulance. Although, if he had taken an ambulance, he could have gotten to court faster by running lights and sirens. And yes, two seperate counties= two different courts here in Oklahoma.

    Sadly I know someone like this. When she was an addict she would steal cars a lot. She only got caught 2-3 times, but she had stolen at least 16 vehicles, and would talk about cars so casually. If she needed a ride and she had ditched her previous car, she would steal another without much thought.

    Oklahoma does not have much in the way of public transportation. The courts are very punitive to not showing up, and they'll likely tell you to figure out your own transportation. They really don't care if you can make it or not, but they'll be sure to hit you with fines and prison on the back end if you don't.

    You left out, "with intent to permanently deprive". Auto theft laws are often written to counter thefts where the vehicle is not stripped or legally stolen, but temporarily removed from the owners control or knowledge.
    If you're up on charges and have to appear, you can always get a ride, just not one you might like.

    The guy already admitted to stealing the vehicle when he told the LEO that he "borrowed" it to get to the courthouse so he can't really claim innocence.
    His claim of "borrowing" would imply that he spoke to the owner of the vehicle and received permission from the owner to take possession of the vehicle.
    None of that occurred in this case.

    I know a guy that was trying to get a divorce because he was in the military, and was getting a housing allowance from the military for his wife. She filed charges against him, and although he was telling the lawyers and court that he was in between a rock and a hard place, because the military was telling Hume that if he didn’t live the wife he would have to pay that money back. The courts and lawyers ignored this man, and he kept in trouble trying to file for divorce, he was already broke and borrowing money from people to get by. The worst part he had to attend court in a whole different state, and was running out of leave to do it, so he decided to get himself kicked out of the military until he made the situation some what manageable. Needless to say he didn’t get the best out come.
