    The only snails I will allow in my tanks are Nerite snails. They keep the tanks so clean it’s amazing, plus, their eggs don’t hatch in fresh water, so if you buy 10, you’ll only have 10.

      @@LittleIowaHomestead ..I have a small tank for my Nerites, i put cuttle fish in because they need the calcium for their shells, then I just take them out and put them in my other tanks when the algae is building up. I had a 60litre tank which was just green with algae. 10 snails took just two and a half days to clean it almost completely. 🤗🇬🇧

    To get them out boil a spinach leaf for maybe 7 minutes, choose a sturdy one so you can tie a string on it for easy removal. Drop it in and within an hour it'll be covered with snails. Take them out and put the leaf back. If you have a lot of snails you can do several leaves at a time to speed things up. Repeat until there are no more snails, might have to take a day or 2 with it. Then you'll have eggs hatch out, stay calm, they don't usually start throwing eggs until about pea sized, so you have a little time, maybe 2 months to play with. Repeat the first process and get the babies out before they mature and you're done. I did this with bladder snails and it worked, every last one, you just need to be a little diligent. With my ramshorns I just sell them on craigslist, sometimes it takes a couple weeks but I always get buyers. If you keep feeding down you can keep numbers down, but if they get even a sliver of a leaf they'll throw eggs. I'm always turning my colony over and I love them. Another thing is that the bigger a ramshorn is, the more likely it is to throw eggs, so often, I let go of snails I'd like to keep in order to keep breeding down. I find that feeding your fish live foods, like daphnia or mosquito larvae is really helpful, cause there is no leftovers. Honestly I couldn't keep the colony if I couldn't turn it over. As a backup, my lfs keeps puffers and will take my snails to feed his fish, that's a last resort, but a helpful cushion if things get too crazy, I definitely overfeed my tank tho.

    You probably had a huge imbalance because I've never had rams horns go out of control like that whether it's from alge or over feeding It was causing the young to live. I've also never had them eat my live plants unless they where new plants adapting to my water or I haven't added fretz in awhile causing them to die off, the snails will know before you do when a plant is dying and eat it which actually helps the plant.. clip out all the parts they eat it will help the plant redirect energy into growing a new leaf instead of repairing the bad one
    I keep them in all my tanks I think they're great for the ecosystem

    You can periodically put a slice of cucumber, squash, or zucchini and next morning or that evening will be covered with them. They are excellent food for turtles dodos and cichlids as well as chickens. It keeps the population down and gives the ones that do stay alive in there plenty of food

      Mrs. WiseRat Cory from aquarium co-op here on TH-cam also gives some good tips on maintaining these “pest” snails because he thinks they are great for the aquarium.
      For example leaving a lettuce leaf at the top of the water somewhere before you go to sleep and when you wake up you remove the leaf and the snails that are there and you can maintain the population like that :)

    Dose with Panacur (dog dewormer). It will kill a lot of snails (over 2-3 days) but does not harm fish nor shrimp. It killed all the young snails but left some adults. Having a few adult snails is ok but too many will turn into an infestation. Panacur did not harm adult mystery snails or the Assasins(they buried themselves). It killed ALL the nerites :-(. After the die-off vacuum the gravel. The Panacur does not last in the water. I used 2 dosing sessions in each of my six tanks. Water goes milky when you add it. Dissolve crushed Panacur in treated water. 1packet in 50ml water. I used 1ml per 10g dosage via a syringe. Panacur also killed my primary targets Hydra and Planaria.

    If you feed them fresh veggies everyday, that should leave the plants alone. By the looks of it, it seems that they have bred so much that food is harder to get as there is too many after the food so they resorted to eating your plants :(

    • @LittleIowaHomestead
      @LittleIowaHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They do eat algae off of plants, it's true. Algae is their favorite. In my situation, though, there were more snails than there was algae (because they had already eaten it all). Only thing left for them to eat was my plants. Even my perfectly healthy plants. I totally wouldn't have minded them in my tank if they refused to eat healthy plant matter. When times get tough, I suppose.

    I had a 50 gallon tank for years and I loved having that tank. It was peaceful and beautiful and my fish reproduced because I took such good care of it but I never had snails. Probably because the fish I had were hearty cichlids and they had teeth!! They ate everything that wasn't another cichlid. Try getting a plecostomus, those are for your algae. They get pretty big though so start off with as small as you can find. My son had a tank as well and he had the most beautiful rainbow shark like yours. It got pretty big.

We had so many babies I was giving them away by the dozen. Love it though.
