    Step 5: Be Audra McDonald.

As far as I know, the only time a Tony category has had a single nominee was 1995, when Sunset Boulevard was the lone contender in the Best Original Score race. It wasn't a good year for musicals.

It was the same with Best Book of a Musical.

Recently, Aaron Tveit was the sole nominee for Leading Actor in a Musical this past awards. From what I heard, If the nominee was the sole nominee, they need at least 60 percent of the votes to win. Long story short, he won!

It's ridiculous that the Tonys have retired their sound awards. The Oscars and the Emmys always reward sound designers and the Grammy Awards are all about sound since they solely revolve around music.

I always joke around with my theatre family that the way to win a Tony award is to play a gay/drag queen type of character lol they always seem to win! Obviously they're still great performers though. I can't wait for the Tony's this year!

I'm always fascinated how they pick who was a lead and who was a supporting actor. I agreed with the choice that Aaron Burr could be nominated as a lead, but you could easily make an argument otherwise. If you're asking which is lead and which is supporting, then Eliza led and Angelica supported. But if you're in the middle of the show and wondering if Philippa or Rennee has a bigger role, they're kind of even. Peggy is the supporting character in the truest sense.

I'm fascinated too! And if the Tony's ever get rid of gender-specific acting awards, I'd say Eliza and Angelica would both be supporting/featured when compared to the roles of Hamilton/Burr.

I'd never really put much thought into how Tony winners are picked before this video, which is really strange seeing as how much I love the Tony's. Great video!

This was so informative! I've always wanted to know the process. Also, if you keep using the producers in videos, why hasn't it been a show of the week yet?! Get it together, Mr. Mash!!!!

i love you, and i love , listening to you and watching you talk as yr brain ticks over, yr a complete loon, and totally brilliant. im afriad id never seen ITW before the movie, but these are just the kind of minor but potent issues that usually swamp and overrun my mind in such circumstances. so glad you allowed yourself to air them fully, i found them all fascinating and i only wish you got to do interview spots with ole steve where you could ask him about this stuff

Hey! I love your videos! Just wondering, do you know about the musical "First Date" with Zachary Levi and Krysta Rodriguez? I like it and thought it would be a good show of the week! Anyway, keep doing what you're doing man!

Both Jerome Robbins' Broadway and Fosse were collections of musical numbers from shows that had won Tony Awards, directed and choreographed by men who had won Tony Awards for many of them. Neither of these shows should have been eligible. Both won for Best Musical. And Robbins' won for directing numbers from shows that had previously earned him a few Tony Awards. The rules of eligibility are evidently not always strictly adhered to.

    Thanks for the info.
Do you think there needs to be more weight given to other awards that include more than just the 5 shows that opened in a broadway show?

What if I played a hard musical theater role? Would that be award enough?

  • @donaldoconner

Didn't Avenue Q campaign for the Tony? They did a whole joke of campaigning as if it were an election instead of an award

    • @moclarkemurray6813
      @moclarkemurray6813 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Wasn't it that which made them introduce the "no campaigning" rule in the first place? After there was so much backlash from people who thought Wicked should have won Best Musical that year? I know there was some kind of alteration to the rules because of it, and I think that was it...
