When I was a kid, my parents had our house renovated. It included a one-way door that looked like a full-length mirror on the wall in the guest bathroom, but was in fact a shortcut from my parents' dressing room to the front hall. It also included an in-wall bookcase in the study that slid to the side if you pushed hard enough, to reveal a ladder to a hidden room in the peak of the roof that I got to use as my secret hideout. Nothing compared to the mansions in the video, but still pretty damn cool for a normal-ish house.
The basement of the Brucemore mansion in Cedar Rapids, IA has tin roof material in place of the ceiling. You can flip a switch and water will spray on top of the tin to create the sound of rain. Amazing.
I believe it's the House of Seven Gables that has a secret staircase near the fireplace where you can go into a secret attic room. That would be cool. I've always just wanted a secret room with lots of books there.
I'm happy you included Singer Castle on this list. One day, you should find a way to include Boldt Castle on Hart Island on a list. America's saddest love story. And just more about the Thousand Islands.
By all technicality that's only if you're counting George Washington as the first. He was not necessarily the first with most of those duties. A helpful page on the matter: www.jjmccullough.com/earlypresidents.htm
Before Washington the "Presidents" were more just Presidents of the Continental Congress and were under the control of the Congress. They were more of a moderator that kept the Congress in order. Their role was kept relatively small and had little in common with Washington and the Presidents that followed. (At least that's the common belief.) There was not an Executive Branch until the current Constitution was ratified. Under the current Constitution is when the US obtained a "President" with a defined role which included being the commander-in-chief of the military forces. Since Washington was the first President under the current Constitution and was the first Commander in Chief, that's probably why he is considered the first President. Either way, I do agree with you that people don't know and aren't taught a lot of history.
Actually, the If you want to compare the position that the President of the Continental Congress had to a position in government today, it would be much closer to the vice president. Their duties are much more similar than that of potus. If you wanted a line of succession, John Addams would be a better candidate to follow Cyrus Griffin... (and yes, I did have to Google for the last potcc, lol).
"people don't know and aren't taught a lot of history." For proof, just look around this comments section. 90% people spazzing out over the Hamilton reference and two folks (AFAIK) pointing out this very basic mistake.
It's closest to Speaker of the Senate, which just so happens to also be the VP. So it's like the Vice President except without all the executive branch duties.
The Winchester Mystery House is open for tours and well worth it if you have a little extra time in San Jose. You wouldn't think that climbing a staircase with 4" risers would be difficult, but it is. Assuming you get a good tour guide, the best part of the experience -- no matter who you are or how crazy you're friends tell you you are -- is the feeling that you are _completely sane_ afterwards.
John Green references John Quincy Adams as "the US's fourth commander in chief.". He was actually the sixth president of the United States. According to Article II, Section 2, Clause I of the Constitution, the President of the United States is commander in chief.
You can visit and get tours of the Winchester House in California. You pass it on the drive down from up north. It's way cooler than this video made it out to be.. including staircases that were stopped by ceilings, doors with walls behind them instead of rooms, and windows that don't look outside.
I'd obviously want a 50's era soda fountain next to the Garage. It'd definitely be open to the public, but I'd get endless root beer floats delivered whenever I want.
Right now I am dreaming of a home with some outdoor space, a sofa and no other people. The joys of being 24 in the 21st century. But in I do dream of one day having a kitchen with one of those little wine cellar holes.
John Quincy Adams was an American statesman who served as the SIXTH President of the United States from 1825 to 1829. James Madison, Jr. was a political theorist, American statesman, and served as the FOURTH President of the United States (1809-17).
Ever since I saw Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde at age 8, I have wanted to be a mad scientist. My dream home would have a full-on monster movie basement lab, fully outfitted with glassware, retorts, stoves, gas lines for Bunsen burners, a full chemistry set, refrigerators, incubators, etc.
Not sure about anything special for my dream house, except a restaurant style kitchen, and a bar area/game room stocked with all the good 80's video game consoles, stand up arcade machines.
Thank you for saying 'past mustard' correctly. I would be completely blown away if you were to work in the correct use of 'cut the mustard' in some future episode.
Okay... in the main questline in Skyrim... there's a bit where you open a wardrobe, then open the false back panel on it, then go down a flight of stairs into a secret room. I want something like that in my house.
When you first said Ice Cream Parlor, I was like: I know a Club in Berlin with an Ice Cream Parlor. It's a hit there too! Wanna do an episode about wierd Club/Pub accessories?
You should have mentioned George Eastman, who spend like $2 billion dollars to move half his house like one foot to the left to make one of his rooms slightly larger
Definitely secret passages. One of them must start (or end) in the library of my dream home. I'd also like a secret tunnel in the basement that leads to a secret exit deep in the forest. You know, in case I ever need to escape from an angry mob, assassins, or tax collectors. ;)
I want to build a home with speakers playing lullaby music at 8:30 pm and annoyingly loud beeps at 3:30 am. i would also like an underground bunker. there should also be a film studio. there should also be a fish tank for the bathroom roof. there should also be 6 bedrooms. it should also have clap on/off lights. finally, there should be heated floors.
What about John Travolta's house? He has his own Boeing 707 (that he flys) and a runway in his backyard!! He even had a jet way for boarding from his house to his plane lol
THE WORLD WAS WIDE ENOUGH
I LOVE YOU JOHN
That Hamilton reference has earned both a like and a share! Thank you John!
When I was a kid, my parents had our house renovated. I'd rather have that than a mansion... Besides the Winchester one.
whoever wrote in that Hamilton reference gets my seal of approval
I approve Alexander.
at 5:23, the photo of Jefferson is asking "What'd I miss?"
The basement of the Brucemore mansion in Cedar Rapids, IA has tin roof material in place of the ceiling. You can flip a switch and water will spray on top of the tin to create the sound of rain. Amazing.

#14 I was gonna make a "What'd I miss" reference only to realize John already did lol
YES HAMILTON REFERENCE
i literally thought the same exact thing!!
Yes Alexander.
I'm convinced John is trying to cram as many Hamilton references in to his videos as is humanly possible (not that I'm complaining)
7:16 I feel a Mongol montage should have played at that moment...
I'm happy you included Singer Castle on this list. One day, you should find a way to include Boldt Castle on Hart Island on a list. America's saddest love story. And just more about the Thousand Islands.
Ah, can't beat a Hamilton reference on a warm summer morning.
I'm the amazing feature in our home
THAT HAMILTON REFERENCE THOUGH!!!
john quincy adams was the 6th president, not the 4th. maybe time to rewatch some crash course us history? ;)
Hamilton references, I love you John
Gotta get in those Ham references :D
That HAM reference! How lucky we are to be alive right now...
Secret reading room hidden behind a bookcase.
I've been in the Biltmore, beautiful home
My favorite secret feature is all the Hamilton references in this episode. 👍
There is a house for sale in Barrington, IL that was built in the 1890s; it's been renovated and added onto SEVERAL times, but it still stands.
I feel so attacked, I started crying after that Hamilton reference
John Quincy Adams was the 6th "Commander in Chief" not the 4th.

love you John watching paper towns right now
Everyone is excited for the Hamilton reference, and I'm just sitting here thinking "Did you really mean the Tower Bridge?"
I would want an indoor pool and a fully stocked art room with every creative item imaginable.
In the video regarding famous homes with good features, you missed the one with fantastic detective abilities:
Sherlock Homes
I live like 25 minutes from Popular Forest and I've been there half a dozen times, so it was cool seeing that mentioned.
I love Winchester mystery house. Been there 2 times and its so interesting! the things she had them build in there are awsome

At 4:11 John says John Quincy Adams was the U.S.'s 4th Commander in Chief... he wasn't... he was the 6th. James Madison was the 4th.
John Green references John Quincy Adams as "the US's fourth commander in chief.". He was actually the sixth president of the United States. According to Article II, Section 2, Clause I of the Constitution, the President of the United States is commander in chief.
JQA = President #6

Is it still secret if everyone knows about it?
I'd obviously want a 50's era soda fountain next to the Garage. It'd definitely be open to the public, but I'd get endless root beer floats delivered whenever I want.
Quincy Adams was 6th...not 4th. Come on John you're better than that.
Cool features!
Hearst Castle is amazing, if you're in California, take a trip there, you wont regret it. I've never seen zebras outside of a zoo before then.
I really miss the salon. It was the greatest. So sad not to be looking upon it now.
why does it say 'gullible' in the description box??
...well I fell for it.
Well played Bee, well played.
I see what you did there
gdamnit! you win this round.
I've never felt so stupid
I screamed when he made the Hamilton reference
I think hidden rooms are awesome.
Love the Hamilton reference!!!
A room of requirements of course!
Whoa this video looked good.
Would have loved to hear about the Antilia!
JOHN I SWEAR IF YOU MAKE ONE MORE HAMILTON PUN I WILL FLY TO INDIANA AND HUG YOU
#17 Istana Nurul Iman is located in my home town... So rare to see it mentioned outside of our community! I've been in there too!
ALL THE HAMILTON REFERENCES. MY HEART HURTS.
#YayHamlet
unfortunately you dont have any pictures of most of these features
Feature to include in any house is a burglar honeytrap entry point, connected to an 'oubliette'style dungeon, natural selection at its best ^_^
John Quincy Adams is our 6th president though, not 4th.
Gillette Castle in Connecticut is a good one. Read about that online, I've toured it and it's cool.
I liked this video solely for the tree phone joke, let alone dropping a Hamilton reference. Respect Mr. Green, respect
Get that Hamilton reference, John.
*references. Hey Jefferson
YES YES YES!!!! I want really paying attention and then I heard Alexander Hamilton and I streamed. And then the references kept coming! 😢
11. Wasn't Adams the 6th commander in chief?
I would like a hidden passage behind a painting as in "Clue". As well as a hidden spiral staircase like "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken".
Right now I am dreaming of a home with some outdoor space, a sofa and no other people. The joys of being 24 in the 21st century. But in I do dream of one day having a kitchen with one of those little wine cellar holes.
"...with a library of over 14,000 books", which I could now keep on an SD card in my phone!
"Car elevator" sounds like my worst nightmare.
Noooooo, John Quincy was 6th!
John Quincy Adams was an American statesman who served as the SIXTH President of the United States from 1825 to 1829. James Madison, Jr. was a political theorist, American statesman, and served as the FOURTH President of the United States (1809-17).

"That's dark!"
I thought it was cute! :D
Killing a baby camel and making its mother watch it be buried so that it would lead people back there? Yes adorable.
Gosh... it is hard to decide. I would love to have secret passages/rooms.
John quincy adams was pres number six...
Not sure about anything special for my dream house, except a restaurant style kitchen, and a bar area/game room stocked with all the good 80's video game consoles, stand up arcade machines.
257 bathrooms-the dream!!!
Thank you for saying 'past mustard' correctly. I would be completely blown away if you were to work in the correct use of 'cut the mustard' in some future episode.
Yas Hamilton!
The world was wide enough for Aaron Burr & Alexander Hamilton!
Elvis' three T.V. sets made this list?
My modest bedroom has two sets plus a monitor and a 15" digital photo frame.
Times change.
Ya i like john green😘
Okay... in the main questline in Skyrim... there's a bit where you open a wardrobe, then open the false back panel on it, then go down a flight of stairs into a secret room.
I want something like that in my house.
hamilton references, i died.
i just wanted to watch a nice, pleasant mental floss video and now i'm crying over aaron burr again. dammit, john.
H A M I L T O N
File this under reason 24601 why I love John green
I NEED MOAR HAMILTON REFERENCES
I would definitely have a secret library that you can get to through a door in my closet.
When you first said Ice Cream Parlor, I was like: I know a Club in Berlin with an Ice Cream Parlor. It's a hit there too!
Wanna do an episode about wierd Club/Pub accessories?
Ooo. Shoot. Not even gonna lie, I freaked out at the Hamilton part.
and another Hamilton reference at the Jefferson part. "What'd I miss?" that's perfection.
@ #07 Did anyone think of the List 25 video that went up today because that was the 1st on their list.
You should have mentioned George Eastman, who spend like $2 billion dollars to move half his house like one foot to the left to make one of his rooms slightly larger
holy crap
John Quincy Adams was actually the SIXTH president, not the fourth.
Havent watched the vid yet, but monticello better be on there XD
Definitely secret passages. One of them must start (or end) in the library of my dream home. I'd also like a secret tunnel in the basement that leads to a secret exit deep in the forest. You know, in case I ever need to escape from an angry mob, assassins, or tax collectors. ;)
It feels really really weird to hear John mention Gengis Khan without an immediate cut to the Mongols clip. WE'RE THE EXCEPTION!!!!!
Secret passageway leading to the basement, where we will have our fully equipped dungeon.
Surprised they didn't mention Falling Water
I've been wanting a laundry chute. It doesn't need to be secret.
Ever since I was 5 I've wanted to live in the bolts castle in Alexandria bay ny
We needed a Mongoltage there.
secret passageways here, too
I want to build a home with speakers playing lullaby music at 8:30 pm and annoyingly loud beeps at 3:30 am. i would also like an underground bunker. there should also be a film studio. there should also be a fish tank for the bathroom roof. there should also be 6 bedrooms. it should also have clap on/off lights. finally, there should be heated floors.
Jefferson called it "Monticello" (or little mountain in Italian) never heard it be called poplar forest
Feel like I should've heard of Kykuit before.
What about John Travolta's house? He has his own Boeing 707 (that he flys) and a runway in his backyard!! He even had a jet way for boarding from his house to his plane lol
