One of the key things about learning the ropes is being able to practice and use them daily. I highly recommend First Class Amateur's channel on youtube because he's showing how people can use rope and knots in everyday things. Most channels are focusing on climbing, rescue, "tactical", or camping, and that doesn't really help us understand the ropes and knots like we want because we almost never do that stuff. Plus, it's just fun to practice the old ways. As FCA often says, rope can do what a ratchet strap does, but a ratchet strap can't do what a rope does. That's a very important distinction to make. Once you get a few basic knots down pat and build yourself a bag of ropes of different lengths, you'll find yourself smiling at every opportunity to use the stuff!

Why would I use the bowline instead of the figure 8 on a bight?

The bowline a good knot to use when you need to quickly tie a rope around an object and it's also easy to untie once you load it. The figure 8 on a bight is almost always preferred when you just need to make a loop in the end of a rope.

@@SixEcho isn't the figure 8 just as easy to untie after loaded? And marginally harder to tie?
