    I'm thinking of doing the crossing next year in an 18 ft Searay bowrider, I've taken it in the lake alot and the ocean once but never a 22 Mile trip

      Make sure to read the swells, have a plan to stay over night if the swells change, have a radio for harbor patrol, insurance for tow, and a gps unit. It can be dangerous. I surf so can read swells really well.

    Awesome 👍, I’m planning on spending 3 days in Catalina in August, I have a Yamaha ar190 No problem going there and back? Overnight parking? Everyone keeps telling me it’s too small lol

      Yea it's fun, but make sure to check surfline for swells and wind forecast. I surf a lot so I can read the oceans well. The pacific is no joke. Also I had a radio for calling harbour master, GPS, US boat tow, and made a plan to stay incase the weather turned. You can get mooring but they not always available. We used a heavy duty off shore anchor cause we couldn't get one. The ride back was wet. Read more about mooring here. Most important thing is to read the swells and wind forecast. Have fun! www.visitcatalinaisland.com/things-to-do/two-harbors/boating/mooring-info-and-rules/

    I have been wanting to go to Catalina. How long did it take to get there, doing what speed? I’m wanting to take this trip and head out from sunset aquatic boat launch in Huntington Beach. I have a 2021ar240 I’m pretty sure it will do just fine. I love your video🤘🏼thanks

      I did about 35-40 and took me about 45 minutes or so we stopped a few times to check out the oil rigs too. Have fun, and check the swell report on surfline or magic seaweed before going.

    Nice vid,looks you guys had a great time,what's your advise on boating there want to try it.where did you launch out of.is it easy too moor and chill on land

      @TreasureGeo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just by the questions your asking I wouldn't advise going till you have better skills. I also wouldn't try that crossing in a boat smaller than 21'.

      @@TreasureGeo Can you describe what kind of skills you are referring to? I also have a boat (no sea experience) and I welcome any kind of advise.

    • @TreasureGeo
      @TreasureGeo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fbflys Well, first and foremost is safety. I worked SAR in this area and around all the islands to the coast. Things go side ways real fast and you should be able to tackle as many situations as possible. Basic boating skills will get you by but also know how to handle less than ideal boating weather. The wind and sea can go from good to shitty real quick and can swamp a boat in the crossing real fast. Have a vhf radio, chart plotter, make sure you check current and future weather condition, first aid kit, flares, extra water and food. I have done numerous searches for countless days for people who have gotten lost and or stranded afloat at sea in this short 22 mile trip. Heading out early in the morning is favorable for this area most days, but afternoon the winds pic up and so do the swells and that can make for a miserable ride back to the mainland. If you plan on going go early stay the night and return early morning. I've been out there in a 82ft CG cutter in over 15ft seas, yes in that channel and it sucks. As for mooring or anchoring out there, there is much information on the Catalina island web site, you can also contact the harbor master in Avalon for details.

      @fbflys 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TreasureGeo Thank you so much for the info. With so much traffic going to/from the island, that people get lost. Aren't there any boat caravans or clubs that provide some sort of training/mentoring to novice boaters?
      Best regards.

      @@fbflys Look up US Coast Guard auxillary, they are volunteer civilians that work with the USCG and I believe they offer classes in boating and can provide you with great info. Let me know when you want to go out and if I'm available I'll cross with you in my boat.

    was the ride back rough? I have been thinking of doing this trip with my boat.

    • @kevpwhite
      @kevpwhite  8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It was rough but not too bad! I couldn't floor it. I had to go about 20MPH made the trip twice as long. I suggest reading up on swells and swell periods before you decide. Also, remember that the afternoon is a lot worst than the morning, so if it gets really bad, have a plan to stay on the island. Don't forget to have a radio if you go solo, no service in the middle.

      @@kevpwhite how sketchy is it with an open bow? Do you take on much water?

    • @getstuk87
      @getstuk87 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevpwhite also, they need to make a waterproof cover for the front bows so it's not an issue!

    • @kevpwhite
      @kevpwhite  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yea the boat was soaked. The ride out is smooth, so no issues there. Coming back is rough. Sometimes you can luck out and get a smooth ride back and forth. They have a cover you have to get buttons installed on the bow though. It is more like a tarp.

    I have a stingray 180lx as well. im going to make the trip this summer . With your video im sure it’s possible.
    Did you put your trim down and ride your bow high to avoid the splashes ? Usually at 10 mph you can do it with the rpm a bit higher then usual but your bow is up there avoiding the splashing waves. Any suggestions?

    • @rafidonikian3375
      @rafidonikian3375 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep me in mind too if you want a caravan of boats . Im in !

    • @kevpwhite

      I read the ocean swells on surfline before I went. I left early to get a flat ocean, the way back was rough. I did it with two boats. I would be down, but I sold my boat. I am looking at ski's right now. I would suggest going with a buddy, check your bilge pump works, have a radio for harbor master, GPS cause clouds can screw you up, and make sure to have a plan to stay on the island if it gets bad. When the water was choppy I had to use my trim and cruise slow with the nose up. Having a open bow is not the best for this trip not to mention the small free board the stingray's have. It's doable, I have done it 4-5 times in that boat, but I always took those precautions. Good luck!

    How long is the trip from where you departed.

    • @kevpwhite
      @kevpwhite  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's about 30-40 minutes from Long Beach. Make sure to take all safety precautions; have a radio, GPS, check the weather, have US tow, and have a plan to stay overnight if the weather turns on you. Without GPS and if their is thick cover you can easily miss the island. I surf so I can ready ocean swells really well. My next boat will be a ocean boat when I start crossing again. I sold that boat about a year ago.
