hi, would the 12-inch iso screws holding the purlins on, not compromise the waterproofing layers as its a direct link from the top to bottom for moister to travel down? actual question as I'm wanting to build an earth ship recording studio.

What are the dimensions of your gutters? Width and depth? Thanks.

As a prepper, I find that it is my duty to use the money I have to take advantage of modern advances in the world so I can live richly when SHTF. Be it the roofing you have now, or a magnet generator used to power battery banks, I will use what I can now to be considered as "Rich" when SHTF.

Do you have to worry about the silicone from where the gutters overlap leeching into the water

We install sprinklers to knock down the salt spray build up on windows..
couldnt a sprinkler or sprayer be installed? (I am asking for another way to install something that pushes the snow and ice into the tanks, instead of oil in pipes under the roof that will at some point leak into the living spaces or worse garden).
I should have said this first! Thank You for Posting such an in depth build video! I have shared it on Google Plus and Twitter and as I watch I will continue to share!

I did not build parapets on my roof. It is just a flashing detail. Check the later roof videos for more info.

where do I get the epdm rubber ? I called around local plastic supply, plastic fabricators, check home depot, Lowes, etc. Is it the Pond liner? Now the pond liner I am finding are not more than 4-6 ft in width. Most pool pond places want to install it not sell me the material. Most of them just looked at me that I am crazy. What other type of plastic material I am looking for? Same thing for poly urethane? where do I find it. Thanks

In the case of this style of Earthship the EPDM is only a hydro break from the ground surrounding the north, east and west buried walls and the roof overhang. I have seen EPDM used on the entire roof of an "undergroud" home, one that has a living roof. I imagine it wouldn't hurt the installation of EPDM directly under the metal roof but it sure would cost a pretty penny. I'm not sure though how the glycol tubes used to melt snow would be effected.

  • @delindsay90210
    @delindsay90210 12 ปีที่แล้ว

The EPDM is laid in this manner to keep GROUND water from getting to the roof structure, not rainwater. This is no different than the waterproofing that basement walls receive in new construction. If you are talking about a commercial roof (flat, or near flat) then it's a whole different story as the EPDM (usually white) is the roofing itself in some applications.

I wish you had taken time to show how you put in the parapet walls and how you made the so rain does not run down the sides of the wall on the inside.

u dont need an earthship on the beach in ecuador. but if u want to build one it can costr you anywehere from 50$ per sq ft to 250$. it all depends on how fancy u want to build

well my reason it's because I want to recicle, were am building is on the mountain side so we got sunny days and super rainy and stormy ones two.
we are growing food on the land but also it would be nice to trick some stuff that grow I'm certain weathers.
also is super cheap And is nice for the environment , I don't want to depend on water and electric service if I can have it straight from nature.

thats awesome. go for it! i mean, building from tires and bottles is great in the tropics as well. it will keep you cool. you can check out the ones that were built in choachi, colombia by alexandra posada. although that is more of a temperate climate, the structures are very similar and would work where you are at too. let us know if we can help you w anything. buena suerte

Alright lets look at this from a different angle. That overlap of EPDM on the roof top (under the standing seam metal roof, is in a location that's over the ground (large overhang), not over the structure. IF water were to breech the metal roof, and partially damage the top 1/2" CDX, then the 8" of rigid foam, it would still have to breech the felt paper directly on the roof deck prior to the Vigas. This design method is also code approved for Taos County.

The roof angles AWAY from the sun and therefore would receive a fraction of the sun's energy (especially in winter) from BiPV. Also the sheer cost compared to the 4 panels he installed is prohibitive. Now if the roof sloped towards the sun like they used to, then yes, BiPV would be fantastic.

go to ethnic markets, like Indian, chinese, arabic etc and the metal salad bowl is 10-15$. I have several at home for kitchen use. Older one were thicker aluminum, the newer one are still strong enough.

if? you have a vapor barrier around the entire house?
why would you have a big concern in the desert for water wicking into the roof beams?
I am not asking to be a dick? I am asking becuase I will be building one of these sooner than later..
the other issue I have is the roof warmer?
is it just me? or if that leaks it will destroy / pollute / cause to be replaced.. the interior ceilings and walls or where ever it seeps into?
this may sound silly.. but in south FL will install sprinklers.

Is there any natural insulation.. all that insulation used here is not very good for the environment.. we make earthship to recycle.. there should be some good natural insulation..

Sorry these are steel baskets. The stores have steel and aluminium both. If they don't have it just ask the store owner to order the steel mesh bowls for you. We had both in our homes. The baskets are very old and we cook a lot and they are still going strong

Maybe in a traditional home, not an Earthshp. Unless you have more than the 40+ years of experience that Michael Reynolds does designing these building then you might want to keep things like that comment to yourself.

epic fail man.. the rubber should have gone under the felt before the insulation layer and not under the metal roofing.
