Who cares...its a good fan compilation,i always come back hearing these nice tracks...and all before 1987 is joyful music, each in its genre interesting and beautiful ! Love it,thanks to the inventor of A dolphin at the stairs, good joy :)
Great info from Michael Faber... The title probably comes from "Dolphin dance" and "Das Mädchen aud der Treppe" that is "The girl on the stairs"...When I have a doubt or cannot recognize a title from TD (I know only some dozens of their LPs...) I use Shazam app on my smartphone !
The amateurish cover art confirms that this is a bootleg. The artwork doesn't look like it's from 1989, it looks as if it was produced on a home PC. But the tracks all date from pre-1989 and the dodgy sound quality suggests that the bootleg was made back then. Roberto Padron asked (albeit in Spanish) for a track listing -- Roberto, if you click on 37:07, you will see the track listing displayed, presumably from the back cover of the bootleg. The track listing is indeed a collection of TD singles, starting with 'Das Madchen Auf Der Treppe', a revamped version of 'White Eagle'. The trouble is, the track listing displayed here does not correspond exactly to the music we hear here on TH-cam. The track beginning at 20:03 is a version of the finale of 'Barbakane' from Tangerine Dream's 1983 Poland concert, which was revamped (with extra Fairlight CMI flourishes) as a 12 inch single called 'Warsaw In The Sun'. Starting at 27:43 is the finale of 'Tangent', again from the 1983 Poland concert, which was re-titled 'Polish Dance' for single release. According to the track listing, what should come next is 'Rare Bird', another track from the Polish concerts which was only released as a B-side of the 'Warsaw In The Sun' 12 inch. But instead, at 33:35, we're back to the 'Barbakane' finale again, with the same Fairlight flourishes as before. The track that follows, at 37:23, is unfamiliar to me. It is not any of the tracks from 'Streethawk' that the bootleg track listing says are next. This period of Tangerine Dream's evolution annoys me so I lost patience listening and skipped ahead to nearer the end of the upload to check if the excerpt of 'Cherokee Lane' advertised on the bootleg's tracklisting was there. Indeed it is, exactly as it appears on 1977's ENCORE. And yes, the final track is 'Baryll Blue', from the solo disc of the limited edition 70-80 box set. So... what is this upload? My guess is that it is indeed a bootleg (maybe a CDR rather than a factory-pressed CD?) calling itself A DOLPHIN ON THE STAIRS, whose back cover indeed has the tracklisting shown here, but that the original compilers of the bootleg got confused as to what they'd actually put on. (It's very common for bootleg track listings to be slightly or even very wrong.)
Thank you for this very helpful post. There is a very high probability this is a bootleg, but in the case of TD even their bootlegs are cataloged. You helped me in my detective work. I already mapped the tracks beginning times, i need to verify as much as possible the tracks names. To add to your knowledge, the track at 37:23 is the main theme from le parc 85 album, but a different version, it is called "Streethawk (radio edit)" or "streethawk (radio remix)", You probably didn't recognize it, because there are three versions of the single. And this version appear also in 1985 compilation called "Disc Drive". There is an even rarer version of the le parc theme called "Streethawk (Aguila De Las Calles)" that is not included here. The version of cherokee lane is indeed from encore but not as appearing here, what's appearing here is as it says an "extract", what appears in encore is the full 16 minutes version of cherokee lane, here we hear only the part with the berlin schoolish tempo. I am positive i've seen this extract in other TD releases too, i need to find which. I didn't upload the track list because there is a possibility one track is missing, i'll check it further. EVERYONE who watches this, in the future i will upload an original "Disc Drive" cassette that i have. Keep you eyes peeled!
btw, if the end of the eightees annoys you, so need to all the TD eras after the middle eightees, with slight ups here and there. As it all sounds pretty much the same from that point forward.
Speaking as one who enjoys their music but lacks any in depth knowledge of the evolution of TDs sound, I’m curious what you meant when you referred to this period annoying you. As far as I know, they only went through two phases - the abstract albums Electronic Meditations through Alpha Centurai, followed by the more conventional Phaedra which continued on until Froese’s death. If there is more variety to their progression I would be curious to learn about it.

It's funny that the title “Ride on the Ray” is actually called Dolphin Dances and can be heard as a bonus on Christopher Franke's 1991/92 solo album The London Concert.

Este pana sabe más de Tangerine Dream que lo que algún día llegó a saber Edgar Froese. ( RIP )
