I write Women's Fiction - the first one is called Stitches, and it takes place in a knitting salon where women form together to hand knit a wedding dress. Not a cozy, not a mystery, just a story of women in the second act of life. This is the first shop in San Diego's Heritage Park, a community of six Victorian houses that I've turned into an art colony in my head.

Debbie Macomber’s “Blossom Street” series is a great fiction read with a knitting group that meets in a yarn store. They share their lives and knitting. She has also written several knitting pattern books based on each book in the series. She had a yarn store which is now closed called “A Good Yarn Store,” which I had the privilege of visiting.

Hi! What a great idea! Two of my favorite novels are
The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs and
The Knitting Circle by Ann Hood. I enjoy listening to books (which I download from the library) when I am knitting and just repeating the same stitches. This way I can enjoy two of my favorite things. I enjoy all your podcasts, thank you.

Debbie Macomber is one of my favorite authors because of her characters and the communities she builds, especially her Blossom Street series. She began her writing career being first published by Harlequin, which of course relies on a set plot line format. This is where her character writing excellence e emerged. I found her with the first Blossom Street book which centers on women's relationships. Try a Blossom Street book, they are well worth your time.

I’d be happier to just hear about books that sounded interesting . A 288 page cosy mystery is a 5-6hour book at slowest, I don’t bother reading reviews ; once the title /author has attracted my attention I find that just reading the synopsis on the back of the book is enough most of the time

  • @LochBriarKnits
    @LochBriarKnits 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Haha - I laughed with the 3.7 stars. I will say, I had my last book released in November and within less than two hours, I had someone give it a one-star review. But apparently she does this to multiple books a day, and I'm sure there are other trolls like that out there. So, I'd go more with the written reviews that give you a broader view of the book by a person who actually read it rather than relying on the star rating.
As for book recommendations, I'm currently reading The Birth House by Ami McKay which is fabulous. It takes place in Scots Bay Nova Scotia during the 1920s and while knitting is not the key element, a group of women get together to help each other out but do so under the guise of the Occasional Knitters Society so others will think they are doing charitable work and not anything that would raise an eyebrow..

My favorite writer is Penny Reid, and she wrote a series called knitting in the city-- 7 friends with a knitting group who find love over the course of 7 amazing novels! These are not your average romance-- she talks about AI, Bitcoin, grief, and hilarious insults throughout the series. IN ADDITION, her books have spawned a smarty-pants romance universe, where authors have joined in her canon to write great books from incredible, diverse points of view. Love her!

I enjoyed this podcast, though I admit that you and I enjoy totally different genres. On the history/nonfiction genre may recommend 'No Idle Hands: The Social History of American Knitting' by Anne L Macdonald. I tend to love contemporary fiction/thrillers. I love to listen to books when I am knitting or driving. I have favorite authors. Barbara Delinsky writes interesting books, and some of them incorporate knitting. I also love to read or listen to nonfiction. I like Danielle Steel, Luanne Rice and Nora Roberts. To all readers and knitters---Enjoy both knitting and reading!

I just finished the short history of the world according to sheep. Loved it. It was absolutely fascinating, well written, and a fun paddle boat cruise thru history into how wool shaped so many aspect of even our modern lives. I will be reading it again. Highly recommend to anyone not just fiber enthusiasts. Also the audio book read by the author was most enjoyable as well. I would not call it a the deepest or most academic book but i dont think thats what it was supposed to be. It will have you going off on any number of rabbit trails.

I went through all of the Vampire knitting books and loved them. Light reading, mystery and wonderful characters. Not hard to read, very entertaining and I was surprised that I liked them so much. I listened to them on Audible after the first three books. There is a wonderful book about a knitter hiking across Scotland I think and camping and spinning wool she collects on her walking journey. The book includes patterns, photos and inspiration....someone will probably remember the exact title, it was about ten years ago that I read it.

Knitting in the City by Penny Reid - this is a series of 7 books that is FANTASTIC!! I've reread all of them at least twice. They are about a group of knitting (and crocheting) ladies that are smart and funny and great friends.

I've read all of the Vampire Knitting Club - they were cute, quick, and fun. They're not for everyone, and I probably wouldn't have read them if I wasn't a knitter and got intrigued by the title of the first one. They can be read standalone - they do a lot of recapping prior books so some time that gets a little redundant if you've been reading all of them.

Last year for my birthday one of my knitting friends gave me Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs. I've read about half of it, but I like it so far. Sometimes I can in a read frenzy where I read a lot of books, series or reread books on my kindle. Then I get in a "I don't feel like reading anything" funk. I can't be the only one who gets this way. Thanks for sharing these books. A couple seem interesting to me.

One including knitting that I read recently (with knitting as a character's hobby rather than a main plot), is Paladin's Grace by T. Kingfisher. So darling, great fantasy murder mystery romance between two strong characters. The audiobook is fabulous, and the characters are so endearing. It's speedy to read, and so worth your time. Definitely spicy, but nothing adults haven't encountered in fiction before.

The book that INSPIRED ME TO LEARN HOW TO KNIT was “Knitting Yarns: Writers in Knitting,” edited by Ann Hood. It is a collection of essays by published authors ( Barbara Kingsolver, Sue Grafton, and Ann Patchett, to name a few) on their experiences with knitting. Not only did it make me want to learn to knit, but it introduced me to authors, previously unknown to me, that wrote compelling prose. 10 years later, I am now an accomplished knitter and I wish I could thank these writers for their inspiration. Highly recommend.

It was a series by Hailey Edwards, with a featured character who knits (magically) that sparked my interest in learning to knit last October. 😄 I swallow a book every two or three days, frankly, and my Kindle is practically attached to my body during my waking hours. Years ago I read Mary Webb’s Precious Bane. It’s not in my “fun to read” list but it takes place in the 1800s when men did the weaving and woman did the spinning. Rural England was full of superstitions and belief in magic. I loved it enough to have read it several times.

Checking out "Three Bags Full", I first came to the typical crime with the middleaged male detective, then I found it, and saw that the original was written in German, so I will see if I can find "Schafkrimi" now ...
If a book is translated, ut is sometimes easier to find it in whatever language if you have the original title, now I found it in Swedish too, hopefully some version is available at the library, or maybe there is on ly the parrot book or the corgi one😂

I followed a recommendation in your recent podcast (“Must-Watch Knitting Content You May Have Missed”) about other podcasters whose channels you viewed and recommended. One of those channels was Rajiv Surendra’s, specifically his podcast “The Melancholic History (and Knitting Technique) of the Gansey.” It was definitely an enjoyable and educational watch. He happened to mention “Michael Pearson’s Traditional Knitting.” I checked it out of the local library expecting to see various cabling patterns, etc. What a wonderful surprise to find all sorts of knitting history. It’s a very informative book, so much so that I’m considering purchasing a copy for my personal library.

If you havent read Anne Rice vampire series i can highly recommend. Interview with a Vampire movie was awful compared to the book. All while reading Interview, i imagined Kiefer Sutherland as Lestat. When they cast Tom Cruise i was shocked and very disappointed. Also her Mayfair Witches series is even better than the Vampire series 😊

Hi, found the sheep book, in romanian,at an online antique store(there are no new editions at sale right now)and it cost me only 2 USD, can't wait to read it...of course I chose some other books too. For me, reading is the best habbit one could have before going to sleep. I liked your video...I believe I could listen to you talking about any subject❤

Another fun episode! Thank you. Three bags full looks like it would be a perfect gift for my mom. Unfortunately, it is no longer available in Ontario, Canada - unless you want to pay between $75.00 and $145.00 cad. It originally sold here for $20.00 cad. Hopefully, there will be a reprint, someday. I hope you have a lovely day.

I'm not much into reading as a form of aesthetic like the TikTok popularized it in the past few years. Just finished the Earth Tone Girl's I love books and socks knitting KAL and the way that majority of the people shared: I read that book and I give it so many stars, without pointing out anything that they will take as a thought from these books just bored me. I miss the good old literature classes where you need to know at least 3 other forms of art to be able to pick up conclusions on the main characters names meaning. And the ability to discuss for 5 minutes straight, what exactly the author is trying to tell you with the fact that she gets out with that red coat on a gloomy morning 😅.
However I'm still reading from time to time and want to highly recommend the whole Manuela Inusa's series and especially "Store for yarn and miracles". One of my all time favourite books!

I just downloaded "Arcanos Unravelled" to my Kindle. My suggestion is for musical theatre fans- "Hooked: How Crafting Saved My Life" by Sutton Foster. It's her autobiographical story about her journey to being a Broadway star and how crafting helped her handle the trials she experienced, personal and professional. I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed it. Great video!

I love reading (ebook or audiobook) while knitting but don’t think I’ve read about knitting yet! But my fave cozy read is the Monk and Robot series (2 novellas) by Becky Chambers.
I love all of their books also but they’re more stressful/less cozy for sure!

I am not a mystery fan but was wanting a fictional story about about knitting. So I tried the vampire knitting club with very low expectations. Well to my surprise I absolutely loved it. Enough to read the entire 14 book series. The books are charming with a good story and great characters. Give it a chance, you may be as surprised as I was ❤

i've been slowly working through the audiobook version of Real Men Knit by Kwana Jackson, which is a cute cozy romance revolving around a yarn store. definitely one of those "not amazing, but also not terrible" books, but it's definitely fun, lighthearted, and cute - which is why i've been listening to the audiobook in the background while i knit, and not sitting down to flip pages. 😂

Unfortunately Three Bags Full doesn't have a Kindle version in English -- only German. I'll have to see if I can find a used paperback.
A thick and interesting non-fiction book on knitting is No Idle Hands: The Social History of American Knitting by Anne J. MacDonald. I think you will find this a good read despite its long length.

My favorite knitting-oriented mysteries are by Sally Goldenbaum and Traci Hall. I’ve also found authors (but not yet read) Holly Quinn, Betty Hechtman, Lea Wait, Nancy Haddock, and Molly MacRae. (I’m still watching the episode, so maybe you’ve mentioned them, Tayler!)

I just finished (okay, I skipped to the end) the Holly Quinn book. I found the main character childish and the plot uninteresting. Luckily, it was from the library, I spent nothing to read it. It made me appreciate the first two authors I mentioned more.

I highly recommend the Perfect Passion Company by Alexander Mccall Smith. I just finished it. It's not like how it sounds. :D AMS isn't a romance writer - his work deals with morals, ethics, relationships, philosophy and the like, but in a light and entertaining way. His characters ponder. His writing was described once as comfort foos for the mind.. and I always thought that was an apt description.
Anyways.. one of the characters in this novel is a knitwear designer! The knitting doesn't take center stage, but it's woven in throughout, which made the book even more enjoyable then it already was. :)

You judge a book by its stars, I judge movies the same way. I’ve tried watching three star movies and doing so reminds me why I watch four stars and above. 😁
