Wife has a three year contract in Auckland (never lived in a big city) working on biking/walking infrastructure. This is our second time at trying to immigrate to NZ. I visited about 12 years ago and fell in love. Great people, great country.
People may think he is exaggerating when he says that it'll be sunny, and then 30 minutes later pouring with rain. It's true.
Moved to NZ (South Island) from the UK nearly 10 years ago.....best move ever. Beautiful country, awesome friendly people, no traffic, less population, good all round climate, greatest rugby team in the world ...wouldn't want to live anywhere else :-)

Cracks me up when outsiders call our pies "meat pies". We're so big on "meat pies" that we just simply call them pies. And the other type of pie is a desert pie, or fruit pie, or apple pie.

Speaking of the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand... During the Korean War, the Americans and Canadians were often left to wonder whether the Aussies and Kiwis were more serious about fighting each other than fighting the Chinese and North Koreans, because of the style of pranks they were pulling on each other.
The rivalry isn't just about rugby, it is about literally everything. But heaven help any outsider that thinks they can join in, because it is a sibling rivalry, and family will always have each other's back

Where I live, only our living rooms have carpet, the rest is wooden. Makes things colder and cleaner

sam billings I also have unlimited broadband. As far as speed is concerned, I can't really say, not being able to compare, but being at the bottom of the Southern Hemisphere, I would expect the internet to be pretty slow by international standards, much like Australia.

Honestly I think I would prefer New Zealand over the USA not just for its aesthetics and culture but for the levels of liberty and freedom that New Zealanders enjoy.

Awesome review mate, you pretty much nailed it all, I still say "Far out!", even living in Perth, Aussies have taken on some of our slang, and try to make out its theirs, just like Pharlap and Pavlova. 😉😊

North island , Mount Rupehu , Tongariro, Taranaki, Maungatautari ,Urewera, Hikurangi, Mamaku , Kaimai rangers , all big mountains of the northisland.
The indigenous and native people co exist and are well celebrated acknowledged as a culture. Which is probably not the case in the U.S
I've lived in about 10 houses throughout nz and only 1 had wooden floors. And it was carpet in the bedrooms anyway. I've only seen like 5 houses throughout my lifetime with all wooden floors.

Once me and my husband drove Queenstown to Nelson. It took us the whole day with only a few quick stops. (I think it would take at least a few days to get to the top of the north island from the bottom of the south island)

Interesting about the internet cafe part. I live in Christchurch (NZ's 2nd largest city) and don't know of any internet cafes, everyone has internet in their homes here.
Wellington is larger now because people moved out after the earthquakes
James Skilton No, Christchurch is around 380,000 whereas Wellington is around 398,000. Wellington is still a hub of activity as it is the centre of New Zealand both literally and politically.

Munch No Wellington City has a smaller population than Christchurch City. However, the Wellington region is bigger, but you can't compare that to Christchurch City.

Auckland is the north island and wellington is the south island!?!?!? they're on the same island!
There are three main islands - North, South, and Stewart Island. Wellington is the capital and at the bottom of the North Island, almost sitting in the middle of the entire country. And yes, Auckland is flat-ish (there are volcanoes all around), but Wellington is the earthquake capital so it's hill again hill with the urban and residential areas in the valleys.

mia smith Wellington is. Christchurch had two large earthquakes recently that were very damaging but were also very unexpected (and also didn't occur in Christchurch but further down the island), and it's understood that historically such earthquakes occur far apart for that area.
Wellington, however, has been known as an earthquake zone (and actually sits on the plate boundary and active fault line) and the nation has been anticipating the "big one" in Wellington for decades. All of Wellington's infrastructure has been influenced by preparing for large earthquakes, unlike Christchurch which had nothing of the sort and is why it suffered the damage it did during its earthquakes.
The two large earthquake risks to the country - those that will be the largest and most destructive, are anticipated to occur along the southern alps in the South Island (the rarer occurring of the two) and Wellington - the only one of the two events that will occur within a urban area.

In terms of housing I think it's very different. Flats (Appartments) aren't all that common, townhouses or units are more common than flats. Houses are typically smaller in New Zealand than in the United States - however the land the house is on will be a lot larger than the U. S. Most houses have large back yards where children generally play and families will gather rather than the front yard. We also have fences. Between the road and a house it will be private unlike in American suburbs. So from the road you generally can't see into the house or the front yard.

Interesting video. A couple of minor points - home broadband is extremely common here - I don't know why net cafes operate but I think it has to do with games and tourists. Also you can't have seen many houses because carpet is very common.

Thanks for the comments. Really interesting to see how others see us, so to speak. You're very much "on the nail" with the hammer. Back in 2005 myself and a friend (he was originally from the States - living here for 40+ years) went on a trip across the USA. Mainly visiting relatives there, and doing some excellent tourist stops. Travelled across 25 States about 6500 miles. One thing I loved was the interstate Freeways. Guaranteed 2 lanes. You are correct with our roads here, Hilly & Curvy. Makes trying to get somewhere fast impossible. But pretty much could draw same comparisons.
The trip we had was so long I ended up authoring a 3 DVD set of the trip.
Looking forward to going back.......

I've seen one, In mt albert in aukland.
No, you I'm willing to bet you have seen more you just didn't realise that that store was a netcafe , I know of 27 internet cafes in cbd alone.
+Hetcho_ well you would have seen another because the only netcafe in mt albert has a next cafe on the right and the left either way you drive down by the mt albert trainstation v8 then theres net3 and anothet netcafe and one by the burger wisconsin in about a 100 m radius.

Wellington is in the North Island but good LOTR analogy. North Island has some amazing forests, Red Wood forest in Rotorua is stunning.
No way near as good as the South Island tho

i've only lived in australia and NZ and the part about the ice cream - yes for sure lol applies to chocolate too however only if it's made from NZ milk. Cadbury used to taste good and when i moved to aus their version of dairy milk was gross. unfortunately cadbury moved its production to aus and now cadbury doesnt taste good.
also two thirds of NZ waterways are polluted (yes that 100% pure ad is a lie) so be careful which beaches you go to!
the convenience store thing is pretty normal.. same here in canada
Internet cafe's still exist but the introduction of wireless hotspots have seem them decline in recent years but you can still find them and the gaming rooms still exist if you know where to find them. Ward Street, Garden Place and Victoria street in Hamilton still has them. Corner diaries yep, no carpet for sure, especialy in areas that renovate villas etc. And the Pokeno ice creams are still too big to eat in one trip.

I loved my visit to NZ although is was too short! In th at sort time I really fell for he place and would love the opportunity to live there, even if only for a short while.

kilometers is the metric system which all the world uses except backward countries use miles.
Just a minor point, it would take about 16 hours to travel the length of nz if there was a straight line from the top to the bottom, and you could travel 100km/hour the whole way :) We'r e small, but not that small ;)

NZ has one of the highest ice cream consumption rates in the world. Its ice cream is very good- but is it the best in the world? How was that determined? Have you heard of Italy? He has fallen for kiwi patriotic hard sell which all foreigners endure. Beautiful country, friendly people, but best in the world statements (except rugby) are best left to parochial mindset of those who have never been outside NZ.
lol Australia/New Zealand always going head to head haha. Rugby we (New Zealand) win hands down. cricket test matches they win and we 50/50 on T20's etc. We do have a healthy competition with the Aussies... not bad considering we have a tiny population compated to them.
New Zealand drives on the same side of the road as the UK.
Sheep numbers are at about 30 mil but back in the 60’s, it was up to around 65 Mil. :-)

Wellington is at the bottom of the North Island. It's about 8 hours from Wellington to Auckland. The bottom of the South is Invercargill. google map it.

Not really like US...tbh. Their murder rate is significantly less than ours. Kids are still walking home barefoot from school all over. Their energy use is great. They utilize natural resources for energy. They recycle EVERYWHERE. Food is less altered than ours (if you're not shopping at pak n save). The reason they have more Internet cafes is because they're connection is very weak, for the most part, and they need that bigger server. People are not as overweight as they are in America. It's basically only Subway, McDonald's, KFC, and a few Pizza Hut. Other than that there isn't really any American fast food. (Maybe a couple Red Burrito's, too.) Petrol is also sold by the Liter, not the gallon. The houses are a lot more focused on natural light than American homes. Their UV rays are some of the harshest in the world, but its still warm. There are major differences if you think about it. The similar value that you find is that all humans just want to be happy and live a quality life.

As a kiwi, I enjoyed this but he does make some strange observations e.g. Internet cafes. Firstly, the internet is everywhere in NZ and we have the worlds fastest cellular networks. It is literally not something id think of raising in an interview explaining what makes NZ unique.
