      Yeah I am dealing with a car right now where someone just threw new sensors at it, and through much trial, I determined that someone was trying to solve timing chain issues and he/she threw new aftermarket sensors at it and one of those sensors was randomly shorting out and causing loss of communication codes and PCM internal failure codes.
      People need to quit guessing on replacing sensors and if they can't do that, MAKE SURE YOU BUY GOOD ONES. By buying the cheap junk, you are promoting their slimy business practices.

    I just put a used engine in a customer's car today and I now have both codes. Now I have to prove to the salvage yard that the engine is bad. They have already questioned my ability to install correctly. Now I must drive the car over Monday and show them the problem on the scanner. And I've promised it for delivery to the customer Monday. Thanks for posting and I'm going to be showing this to the yard come Monday. Thanks again.

      +The Flat Rate Mechanic That's what I have planned for tomorrow morning. If screwed up I will have to replace the chain's. The old engine has good components and I'll just have to switch them over. Will probably have to wait days with the yard. Have to get it out the door Monday. Have other cars to fix next week. I'll shoot some video and post it about the ordeal.

    i HAVE DONE 3 OF THESE GM 2.4L TIMING CHAINS RECENTLY. 2 OF THEM THE TOP GUIDE WAS NOT ONLY MISSING THE NYLON PART BUT THE METAL TOP PART OF THE METAL BRACKET THE NYLON ATTACHES TO WAS ALSO MISSING. AND THE CHAIN ACTUALLY WORE A HOLE IN THE VALVE COVER ON ONE OF THEM. THE THIRD ONE, THE WHOLE GUIDE, INCLUDING THE BRACKET WAS MISSING INCLUDING THE SCREWS THAT HOLD IT ONTO THE HEAD. ANOTHER THING I FOUND IN COMMON ON ALL 3 OF THE ENGINES I DID WAS THE FRONT (INTAKE SIDE) GUIDE WAS BROKEN, ALLOWING SLACK IN THE CHAIN.

As i told you, silicone for sealing the badly designed holes on the top (cover case leave a hole in contact with the chain guide, and I bought the improvement guide bolt for the distribution chain. Dont forget to clean the oil pan, because old plastic parts block the correct fluency of oil.

    So I've got a wild story about a particular vehicle for a customer I had put an engine (3 to be exact) in for. I'm far from new to the 2.4 and 3.6 gm timing jobs. But recently I had a 2010 equinox come in and it was roughly my 25th or so job dealing with a 2.4. it was the customers high school daughters, 130,xxx for miles, looked maintained inside and was washed but like a teen, the hood never gets opened. Pulled valve cover and it was obvious they ran it dry of oil and it was the worst 2.4 I've seen yet. Metal deposits everywhere in the top end so recommended a used, lower mileage replacement engine. Finished up and sent them on their way. 2 months later it had a piston noise and like any other shop, it was warrantied from our reputable source, no issues. Well that 2nd engine 10 seconds from start up kept setting p0016 & p0017 codes, correlation codes which is involving a timing issue. I pulled my hair out for over a week, tore it down, new phasers/ tensioners, IT WAS ON TIME! After the 4th attempt knowing it was known good timing, I went as far as asking a friend that's a GM master cert. Tech if he's come across this issue and he'd never seen it before. I started pulling up recalls and TSB info on my zeuz scanner and shit you not I figured out the off the wall issue.. there's reluctors on rear of the cams, which is how the two cam sensors talk to each other and relay info back to pcm to know timing is correct. Well if the engine was previously overheated, those reluctors are only pressed on at the factory and will actually spin on the butt end of cam! My intake camshaft reluctor was off and it spun! I called my local GM dealership to order a new cam and unsurprisingly my luck, 2010 was a ONE YEAR ONLY style reluctor for cam.. and naturally it was discontinued. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Called yards to sweet talk them until saving me a cam for any 2010 cores but couldn't be at the mercy of trusting anyone to actually call me when they got one in. So had to put a 3rd engine in the car!! Insane ordeal and naturally it always happens to me 😂 so save your 2010 2.4 cams!!

  • @Anonymous-it5jw
    @Anonymous-it5jw 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I see that the intake solenoid is grey, indicating it is for the 2010 LAF Equinox, not the 2011. From the pictures, it looked like it may be a replacement part from another vehicle. You have to use the VIN to go online to determine exactly which engine build you are working on, and the correct intake solenoid. If the grey one is incorrect, putting in the correct one will help.
    The slack timing chain between the 2 phasers seems to indicate a failure of timing chain tension or incorrect valve timing, a problem which would also be indivated if the timing chain lines up with the wrong timing marks on the exhaust phaser(and possibly the intake phaser also). One often overlooked cause of these conditions is a defective or obstructed timing chain tensioner - replacing it with a new one is sometimes quicker than taking the old one off, then taking it apart to be sure there are no broken parts inside of the mechanism, and then resetting the actuator in the de-activated position before re-installing it. They are very easy to break when deactivating them. The torque spec on the chain tensioner upon replacement in the head is 55 ft lbs I think, but check to make sure. Chain tensioner failure, and the resulting retarded valve timing from the timing chain skipping a tooth on the phaser sprocket is a more likely cause of chain guide wear and valve timing issues than a "stretched" timing chain. The metallic and plastic debris caused by the erosion of the top chain guide gets into the chain tensioner, which is run on oil pressure, and can lock it up, thereby causing a "no-tension" situation on the timing chain.

    • @evdawg7757
      @evdawg7757 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've noticed around 2013 they stopped running cam specific phasers and were interchangeable. Just did one Monday and stumbled onto that. The cam phaser bolts are also torque to yield as well as crankshaft dampener pulley bolt so to be "official" they should all 3 be replaced with new bolts. They're pretty cheap at gm though.

    Hey @FlatRateMechanic,
    My coworker is trying to repair this hunk of shit 2008 HHR SS. It has p0016 p0017 p0089 and had a p0090. He did the chains, problem is he has never done a timing chaim before and i was not there to chck his work before reassembling the engine. The codes persisted, we replaced all cam sensors, crank sensor, HPFP with genuine GM part. The live data shows the timing bouncing all over the place at idle, he swears he has the chains right. He also replaced the phasers, the MAF and Cam actuator solenoids with genuine GM parts, so basically everything has been replaced except the cams, the injectors. The misifire graph on autel scanner shows immediate misfires on cylinder #1. Actual fuel pressure is never the same as desired but gets pretty close. They both above 500. Desired. Shows to be 555 and actual drops and rises 100psi +/- seems to run decent on start up but starts misfiring bad when it idles down. Also the engine does have bad vaccum because the brake pedal is janky, basically has no brakes. Kinda hard to push and sinks after being pressed but remains stiff. So im assuming he did the damn chains wrong. I know its kinda hard to say from where you are but hopefully you could tell me if im on the right track. I would be so grateful to know we arent chasing a gremlin. Im pretty sure its the chains. Thanks for the informative video, i have a couple years experience but im still learning. @NatalieMarie917 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sure my answer isn’t of much help to you 7 months later, but for anyone else with a similar problem: it does sound likely that it’s a timing chain issue to me. The chain, tensioner, and guides are all replaceable. The cost of replacement is going to vary depending on your car, and it can get pretty pricey. In trucks & SUVs, they are harder to get to (a lot of other parts have to be removed first) so the labor costs are going to be higher. But, you don’t want to risk a broken chain. Depending on the layout of your engine, it can cause major damage to the surrounding parts.

    so i just did a timing chain, guides, tensioner, phasers and added a pvc valve and water pump on my girl's engine last fall. and the engine did good for all winter and now i'm getting p0011 p0016 p0017 codes. i had her clear the codes and now waiting for the first code to return to see what that is. the other codes may be from the first code. she has been changing the oil at 3000 miles regularly now. i also did new rings and bearings the oil pump was good. i did put in new phaser oil control valves but they gave her tons of codes so i put back the old ones. they did click and did have correct ohms. she said no noises like before. so i will put the new oil valves in and see if she gets tons of codes again . i;m wondering if i have a crank or cam sensor failing and not send a code for that? she did say " It's jumpy like before. It sputtered a tiny bit that was barely noticeable the day before the oil change " so does anyone have an idea? thanks

    I have loose chain, just replaced everything from tensioners to chains and sprockets. this car has never thrown a code. tested the actuators etc, never had a code even though you can clearly hear the chain rattle. please watch my video and read the description and let me know what you think

      Did you properly activate the new timing chain tensioner? If you aren’t sure what I’m referring to, then you probably didn’t. Go to your public library and look at the Haynes guide on your vehicle. If your timing chain is still making noise, it will tell you how to activate a new timing chain tensioner without having to take the valve cover off.

    So your chain skipped but didn't damage internals ?

    • @Ramslamtheman
      @Ramslamtheman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It didn't skip, but the guides keep everything tight along with the tensioner, and if the guides break, the tensioner will still be fine, but the chain will just be loose. It can definitely jump timing though. Very lucky

    I am only getting the p0017 code and not p0016 since I am only getting the one code do you think it could be a bad sensor? Plan to tear into it tonight but thought I would bounce that off you.

    In 2017 Malibu LT 1.5T If vacuum pump breaks, it will also cause car to shutdown, no crank and long crank. This is absolutely GM trash design. I can see a lot of lawsuits coming for repairs. Seen class action was filed in July 2023, keep your records.

    Just changed the exhaust camshaft sensor (did intake a month ago, then found out there was a second) and now getting P0017.
    Guess I’m checking the solenoids for metal next.

      If you just put a new chain on it you may need to double-check your timing marks, could be a tooth off.

  • @stevewarren3051
    @stevewarren3051 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    These type of fast and dirty videos are useless. Many things other than a loose timing chain can cause a P0017. Fix it then post the video.

    • @stephencook7337
      @stephencook7337 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steve Warren Agreed. The chain could have jumped a tooth on the camshaft gear, which is a main p0017 issue and nobody wants to show that or how to go about repairing it, probably because they rely on making money on said repairs.
