Thank you!.. I use a GoPro 11 mounted onto a Volta and hand held out the car window. (not really the best way but I know the area very well and know the twists and turns of the roadway.If you have a passenger I would suggest having them hold the GoPro) I have tried mounting a stationary GoPro but it limits seeing the whole scenery around me. I use Nikon Z6 and my Iphone for the still photography. I use a Mac Computer so I use Final Cut Pro to edit the video and use Lightroom Classic to edit the still photos. Before switching to a Mac I used Filmora on my PC to edit the videos. I hope that you have an awesome time on your trip.

@@angiek.9573 Going through Cody and up Sylvan pass into the park is absolutely beautiful. I always tell people that it will take longer to enjoy Yellowstone than you think. Google maps does not take into account traffic, detours, stopping at Old Faithful, and all the other features YNP has to offer. If you are going east when you finish at Gardiner, go through the Lamar, silvergate, Cooke City and over Beartooth Highway into Red Lodge. There will not be enough time in the day for you to leave Cody, go over Dunraven, through the Lamar and over the Beartooth and then backtrack to Gardiner. If you were to stay in Red Lodge or Cooke City one of the nights it could be doable. You don't really want to drive through YNP at night. Buffalo, Moose and bear fur does not reflect headlights and it is really easy to hit them at night. Those are my thoughts, but whatever you choose you will have a great adventure.
A normal car is perfectly fine as long as you are staying on the highway. Some of the dirt roads can be rocky and bumpy just use your best judgment on those. If the dirt road starts to get bad just remember that it isn't going to get better.
I am assuming you mean by "The real Yellowstone" you are strapping on a backpack and heading into the backcountry. Unfortunately a lot of folks are unable to hike or camp and are only able to see the views from a car or short walks. Are you saying they shouldn't bother because they can't experience the "real" Yellowstone? Some, like myself, visited the park and all of it's attractions years ago when it was more enjoyable. I still like to drive through the park with minimal stopping just for a day trip, Am I not allowed because it doesn't fit into your idea of a "real Yellowstone" trip. It isn't up to you to judge what is a real experience and what is not.

Q: if you were at Silver Gate at 7:00 am instead of 10:30 am, do you think it would still have been a 6 hour drive to get to Sylvan Pass ? I'm thinking of driving through YNP for old times sake, from Cooke City to W. Yellowstone. But I sure would not like it if it took me 6 hours. I still want to just cruise and enjoy the scenery but not for 6 hours. Early morning maybe a better chance? Tom
um... I don't want to break your heart but it is going to take longer than you think. I mostly just drove on this trip, very few stops and they were less than 15 min. Dunraven pass is 35 mph. and depending on traffic, really slow going. Between the buffalo jams and the construction, that took up about an hour of time. It took me 3 hours just to get from NE entrance to Canyon. If you left super early in the morning before humans start moving about you will have a better chance doing it in less than 6 hours. Google maps does not take into account that you are driving through a National park with national park traffic/Wildlife. Any of the areas with major attractions and going to be slow going. If you go -Cooke City - Tower - Canyon and then take the crossover (which is just trees, trailheads, a waterfall). That road will hook you up with 89/191 and then West Yell.. That would be your best bet timewise. Going through Mammoth and down 89 and over to West will take a bit longer than the first route. If you go down to Yell. Lake and around past old Faithful, plan on a super long day. I'd say just do it and hope for the best but expect delays and a longer day than you think. Bring food and water and a bucket of patience.

I was thinking of leaving at the crack of dawn and hopefully missing a lot of the human activity on the trek through the park. I was planning on taking that crossover that you mentioned (Norris Canyon Rd I think) and skipping the lake. Truthfully, I really want to do some camping and hiking outside of Cooke city this trip and see the Park one more time as I head west for the Pintlers and then the Bitterroots. I will mentally prepare to "just make a day of it" (or, a bucket of patience as you put it) and enjoy the process of making my way to my next location.

We best loved coming in to Yellowstone via Eastern entrance from Cody on the gorgeous Wild Bill Cody scenic byway and on thru Wapiti Valley(grizzly bear country). The one year we stayed at a motel in Wapiti which was at the foot of the hill where the Smith Mansion was being built, what a sad story of that man who was building it.Coming in to Yellowstone from Red Lodge or the Tetons spectacular too. Thanks for bringing back the golden memories with your gorgeous video...
It is a great drive especially after they redid the road. This was my first time on it since the reconstruction. It was a mess before. It is worth the drive if you have the time. I also prefer the NE and E entrance to the park.
Buffalo Jam is a good name, considerably more polite, for sure, for what kids who lived in Yellowstone in the late 1060s and early 1970s called Touron Jams. My Grandfather was an NPS Naturalist Ranger (as in non-law enforcement) and I spent summers with my grandparents in YP when I was a kid. My friends and I would ride our bicycles all over the park. Sometimes as much as 30 to 35 miles a day. We would find a nice spot with plenty of room to park lots of cars and RV's and stop and stand on the side of the road. When traffic would come by we would point across the land at nothing and act all excited. People would see us and stop to see what we were looking at. After a few minutes a full fledged Touron Jam would form. We would say "It's a moose," or "It's a buffalo", whatever popped into our heads. There would soon be animals coming around and everyone was happy. You know what a Touron is, don't you? We used to describe it as _"Half Tourist and Half Moron, not necessarily in those proportions."_ :)
🤣😂That is funny because we used to do the same thing back in the day. I am not saying I would do it now 😉😉😎. I am absolutely aware of the "Touron". I see them all the time. I wish people would realize that the rules are there for a reason. for the safety of the animals, the park and the people. As the Parks get more crowed we all need to learn to share the space like adults.
6:37 The Soda Butte mound is still alive. I find it sort of funny...people let their kids climb on it for pictures etc...and some walk around back and get a surprise. The rotten egg smell, and little wisps of smoke....the look on their faces is priceless...."It"s still alive ! ".
Thanks!. I actually hand hold the GoPro on the Volta out of the drivers side window and rotate it towards interesting scenery as best I can. I have tried mounting it but it doesn't give the same feeling of looking around. I am familiar with the area so I know what is coming up around the corner, which helps. When I am on the back of the Harley it is a lot easier to pan the GoPro around because I am the passenger. I do not own a 360 camera but maybe someday.

Nice video. Is it necessary to drive 4X4 car for across beartooth highway? Can the normal compact car pass through smoothly?
