@@philipw6611 I have the same 3 platforms on each side.. and they work.. make sure when you set the trains stops start with the faraway part of the station first. for exemple when you set the trains stops.. put them like this.. 1 stop = line 1 and the alternatives on 2 and 3. do the same for any station you build using multiple stop spliting on the same station.. and they will work..and make sure the station stops are long enough so the train that stops in it.. have enough room to get inside the spot. The best thing is this is possible with base game features and not reliant on mods. I adapted the idea to create a mixed freight/passenger setup. I never thought about splinting them i'am new to the game, but what i did my second game was to have separate TGV train going to the bigger cities (+400 ppl) and eventually to transport hubs (when rail from North to South crosses East to West). The rest is connected via separate line going next to TGV (love racing trains on it :P) and stoping on every possible point. When i do full circle i might do 2 separate TGV train lines. On lower speed lines i also haul cargo trains. if they don't have their own, since they are often going somewhere in the woods...
Going to make this a separate comment. After playing a map specifically with these terminals (and your cargo hubs - which I LOVE), the downside I see to this is that it makes having shorter express lines a pain (2-4 major cities, or between 2 major cities). I setup my mainline initially between 6 cities (4 big cities, 2 little ones). I'm using JR East 253 units on my 'slow city to city' routes (you're using the RAE? here). This works great. However if I want one of the big trains that are in the 250-300+ kph range, then they're too long to effectively use those middle tracks and you're making special turn around loops for them. My point is that there's definitely some compromise and playstyle change needed to use these stations to their max. Although with how your outer platforms are setup with multiple terminals on the same track, there's definitely room to stuff a lot of trains on there on 1 big express line that goes up the entire mainline, but then you lose some of the fine tuning. I'm still sorting this part out lol. I've committed to playing this map out to keep getting used to your cargo hubs, but am still experimenting with the pax lines and terminals. That said, I do want to thank you for your videos. Have learned from them.
Thanks for your comment! Theres always a bit of wiggle room with sandbox games like this so youre quite right to adjust it. Im actually publishing a remastered version of this video tonight or tomorrow which is much more in depth! Hope you like it 😁
Nice . I'm going to try this next time I play. I do like a nice busy station. Trying to find the best approach for a big terminal station at the moment.
Cool! I'm pretty much a beginner so my stuff is really crude, but I enjoyed the video and will work towards utilizing the concepts and maybe even the station. Thanks for your time & effort to share share with us!
When allowing the long length cross-country service to pull in on the end of the platform (3 and 14), does the fact that the long platform is broken into several short ones behind it (1,2 and 12,13) affect the load/unload time of the cross-country train since its platform is shorter than the total length of the train?
It does yes. However, this dosent matter as you want all trains aside from commuter to sit in the station a short while so they can fill up as much as possible. Cheers for the comment Daniel!
Question... what do your end stations look like, and how do you route the tracks for those? Spent hours building, destroying, and repeating several times to get it setup like what you're using (more or less) for a few cities. But the routes at the end cities aren't happy. Because they weren't the true end - was going to expend, I ended up having to put a loop in behind those terminals to make it work. But without some elevated passes (which is a pain) I see this becoming very messy at the end. Especially since I'm running 6 lines for my main track (1-2-3-3-2-1, with 3 being my mid speed, 2 being my slowest trains/freight and 1 being my high speed trains). Just doing my main stations is a pain. And I haven't even hooked up my freight yet - I always do the pax lines first.
frankly, terminuses suck. I avoid them at all costs unless theres a city in the very extremety of the map with no choice but to use. Theyre just not very good unless theyre bulky as hell.
This seems like a great idea (and it's actually realistic, the track arrangement is called a lap siding in American terminology) but when i try it in game, my trains only use the front section and I get "Could not connect all alternative terminals" errors. Am I doing something wrong or has something changed? EDIT: I figured it out. You cannot put signals after the platforms. They can go on the through tracks, but you can't put signals between the platform sections. You don't need them and they mess it up completely.
I go for the same style as longer stations are less disruptive to city fabric than wide ones one thing though - I make them lowered down, so I can make level bridges at both ends. So the city end's up being cut off by up to 400 in length (in the largest city) by the station, which is basically minus one large street. The width is basically platforms and tracks, as bridges basically have 0 base. And I place them in the middle of my cities. But yeah - I find this configuration the best :) Just got my new PC after not touching the game for a year (had a rather weak one till yesterday) - played for ten hours, about half way through the central train-metro-tram station in the main city (though I use trams on tracks and I for level crossing without those pesky bumps, so it takes a lot of planning which definitely took a bite into that 10 hour of station building). Only problem with this layout - had to change the plans for the tram line as had to add terminals at the ends of the train central station as it ended being some 600m in total and it would actually take a while for a sim to walk from center to the furthest platform where I ended up putting terminating commuter trains.
obvious question, but why deliver from distribution to towns only using trucks? Surely it would make sense to have mega trains leaving the distribution hub and stopping at all stations delivering all goods and while it's doing that bring goods from towns back to the distribution hub?
Found your short vid about this and built a Station like this on my map. A little bit longer but quite the same. Only need to make some lines which use it and then i hope everything will work as planed. Nice Video Thumb up.
isnt it better to make |x||X| switches cause than if there is a train it can go around the train i have that setup in a savegame i have you just need to set the signels correct and that wil work and if that is in this station is will work even better i think
Its custom on my personal game, you cant get it on the workshop. What i recommend is this one (which i use now too) steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3037982945
Do the crosscountry trains get the loading speed penalty if they're longer than the platform section they're assigned to, or does the game recognize the fact that they're essentially a long platform?
Hey guag thanks for the comment! They do get this but the rest of the station makes up for it and more in efficiency so it dosent matter they are there slightly longer. Plus it looks cool!
You can do, but I think N junctions are better in this instance as they can pull onto the designated through line. Maybe you can share some insight into your thoughts, why is x junctions better in your opinion? Thanks for watching
@@Hushey While EljeOett may have discovered this earlier, the power that has been added with the use of alternate platforms improves this drastically. Would it be possible to do X junctions with one way signals to help control direction? Then incoming trains would be able to skip trains at early platforms to go to the other platforms further down the line. For example: at 6:50 you setup the alternate routes for trains at platform 1 or 2 to avoid a train at platform 3. One issue I see is if a train is coming into platform 2 or 3 but another train is at platform 1, the incoming train must wait for platform 1 to clear. One thing that would bring this strategy to a halt is a long train that came from the middle through line and stopped at platform 3, blocking the through line. So all trains would have to fit within the platforms to avoid this. Let me know your thoughts.
@@sekondnature101 I see. Great idea if you're running most or all commuter services. However I avoided this as you can't really do cross country /express very well here. Thanks for your input and for watching!
@@Hushey I played terminal railways as a kid and they had a station with the same setup with x junctions so when I started playing TpF2 I tried it and it worked. I would rather use a X junction because of my memories about it and because if you use a N junction and one train is blocking the tracks where the train has to pass a normal long platform would be better, only downside with X platforms is that you need 2 tracks in between, where if you use N you can build with one track in between. Also x junctions feel slow but I think the trains are as slow in a N as a X junction
Meanwhile I've been using a single modded train station with minor customisation for every city I connect, might see if I can edit them in certain cities with passing tracks and multiple platforms on a single track though
Hi Graham no problem i understand they are very similar! Intercity is jumping from city to city. Cross country trains however may skip some cities to opt for speed instead. Hope this helps!
Hey mate, ill give you a like for the effort but i wont pretend i understand any of that spaghetti monster you made there... Im an older player and i prefer simpler things. I think this only makes sense in your head, mate, for me it seems needlessly complicated. I prefer a simple 4 track station with 2 platforms on the outside tracks. Any express or freight trains can go through the middle 2 tracks, while any IC trains can stop at the 2 platforms. I think this would be enough for any medium and large towns. I understand that you are trying to create realistic large train stations, but lets face it, in TF the maps are not even the size of a country, more likely the size of a county/district with up to 20 towns at most and a through station with 6 lines and 4 platforms is more than enough for most towns, but to each his own, i guess. However, i have to give you credit for that split platform with switches in the middle of the station, that is pretty clever. GG!
I'll be honest, the distinction between "intercity " and "cross country" service is very unclear in this video. With your test map (which I did download to examine for myself, btw) only containing cities A, B, and C, having an ABC-run and an AC-run simply emulates a freight-passthrough.
Hi Fister! The map is just an example to showcase the main station shown in the video. I do agree i could be clearer. Cross country means more very long distance aka a non stopping service and intercity stops are major cities. Commuter trains stop at all towns and cities
@@Hushey Yeah, there's quite the diversity of nomenclature, not only among yootoobers like yourself but also in irl contexts. (My first career was in logistics, and the Transport Fever games seem to model the workplace rather faithfully.) I'm curious, do you have any gameplay experience with Simutrans?
@@Hushey Hey, I still don't get it. The Cross country and intercity lines are defined the same way. An inter-city train is typically an express train with limited stops and comfortable carriages to serve long-distance travel. What's the cross country then? I only find this sentenc on google towards a british way to transport people from one section of a city to another, which would mean I don't need the trains for that like shown on the map. What I am missing? "Cross country means more very long distance aka a non stopping service and intercity stops are major cities" sounds like the exact same thing as InterCity, because it's an express long travel train. It looks like we have trouble to understand the meanings between "british and european/german" meaning? What's the benefit to use this station compared to a station which does just have a separate tracks for a passtrough? I don't get it :d
@@DerHouy interesting point raised. So im reffering as cross country to a more cross map service. One side to other. Like a bullet train sorta thing. Intercity means stopping at only the big cities and commuter at every city
This kind of station is mostly unnecessary overkill. The poor coding of the game will cause a map to grind to a halt when you have the number of towns which it would take to make the station operate to its full potential.

GG!
Cheers for the comment dangeruso! who knows, give it a try see if it works for you
I'll be honest, the distinction between "intercity " and "cross country" service is very unclear in this video.
(My first career was in logistics, and the Transport Fever games seem to model the workplace rather faithfully.)
I'm curious, do you have any gameplay experience with Simutrans?
@@misterfister8641 no, i havent played this
@@Hushey Hey, I still don't get it.
I did that station in transport fever 1 (don't ask me how)
How
@@Hushey magic
Just minus alternate platform feature
you should explean signaling better
I have a video covering signals, this video is due a remaster as well 😁
This kind of station is mostly unnecessary overkill. The poor coding of the game will cause a map to grind to a halt when you have the number of towns which it would take to make the station operate to its full potential.
True, but its so efficient you can use it anywhere intermediately and on even 1/10th of the potential for max taffic flow
