Thank you so so much for doing a real time leaf episode. After many hours scouring through speed through videos i am so thankful. I am now currently binge watching your channel for more tips :)
I don’t really watch many time lapse videos for all my subscriptions. I don’t learn from them. I hope you will continue your streams in real time. I really enjoyed this stream. 💕
Need to give you a heads up for planning your next 10 or 25 or 73.5 videos. Real time..... Real time, yes, real time. With this video I came away confident that "I can do THAT !!!!" Many more please. Your commentary is soo helpful. Thank you for thinking of us.
That's fantastic! There's no better feeling than confidence and I know I'm confident that everyone can use these easy techniques for coloring. There will be more real time moving forward, for sure! Thanks so much for your kind words!
Hey Rachel! Thanks for the real time video, and for covering some techniques for Magical Jungle. All of those leaves can get daunting at times. Hope you have a great week!
I appreciate your tutorial very much! You answered many leaf coloring questions I have had as well as confirming some techniques that I have stumbled across since entering the world of coloring. Getting to see your techniques used in real time helped so much and I enjoy your company when coloring. Silly as it might sound it is less intimidating for a beginner like me to have a "coach" of sorts. I initially thought 43 minutes was a long time for a video but then it was over before I realized it. Thank you for reminding us that coloring is for fun! I sometimes take it too seriously. Lastly my favorite JB book is definitely Enchanted Forest.
I enjoyed so much your video on the leaves. Your work on Ms. Basford's awesome drawing is just beautiful, and very interesting. I started a playlist on TH-cam to catalog your videos so that I can watch them over again. I do not have any of these special coloring books yet, but have several from Dover publisher on flowers, so the leaves video will help me . Thank you.
I like how you announce the colors you are using and you don't talk too much. Perfect. I do choose my own colors, usually because I don't have the exact colors anyway. You make great videos I must say. Good instruction along the way. I usually do not watch videos that are more than 30 minutes or else skipping and missing comes into play. Not with yours, nice and smooth, informative. Oh! Thanks for not using pop every other word and lead us to believe that pop! something is going to happen. I get it. "Pop" can be substituted with "stand out". Ok, looks like I am channeling Siskel now. Back to video and thanks again.
Glad to hear!!! I am steadily hoping to make my videos better. The production aspect is all very new to me! Also, you are such a big supporter here and on Facebook and I really want to say A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to you!
Your videos have become my Zen place. Your voice is so soothing, and your style is so sweet and delicate. I have a couple of the Johanna Basford books, and I'm curious to know if you know the purpose of the little arrows she gives us. Do they suggest where to put shadows or darker colors? Each time I come across one of those little guys, I ask "what are you trying to tell me little guy?".
I've been coloring a long time and love Johanna Basford's books, and just recently discovered you Rachel! - that's my name too! You are delightful, honest, and refreshing! Thank you for refreshing my love of coloring. For anyone who has an illness or medical/physical conditions that are painful, coloring is a wonderful way to take your mind off the pain. Again, thank you Rachel for the tips, tricks and inspiration! Rachel M.
I learned a lot in a very short time. I'm watching part II next. Will be doing several Wildergorn posters, which will be a challenge and need to learn all the 'secret' techniques I can. You show us great techniques. I mean, who would've thought espresso was such a handy color for shadowing...well, obviously you did...I absolutely must get my hands on one of those blenders. Such a handy and essential tool for adding dimension to the different layers.
I have Ivy and the Inky Butterfly, Inky Wonderlands and I just received her Christmas book as a gift from my cousin. I have worked more in "Inky Butterfly" obviously. I'm going to get started with the Christmas book soon.
Great video!!!! I love the real time and your explanation. Your coloring technique is also very good, thank you for sharing! Would love to see more of this,
Did you ever get the part 2 of the leaves tutorial. Sure would be nice to see it. Thanks for you for your instructions, very helpful for us beginners.!!
OMG! I am so glad I found you! I'm a new subscriber to your channel for sure! there are tons of adult coloring youtubers/channels nowadays. they are all great and talented but they only do quiet speed colorings and if they do do real time... they just play music. I don't consider those color alongs. a real color along is not only in real time but has a voice over or the youtubers talks while filming and explains each and every step. it's so much easier to learn this way. yes, you might learn something by watching those other coloring channels who never speak but it's a lot more likely if the youtuber is explaining the steps, etc. until I found you, Peta Hewitt was about the only one who actually spoke in her videos. I love everything about Peta's videos but she hardly ever uploads anymore because she finds it hard to find time and her husband too (who edits her vids) because they both hold other jobs. jalapeño girl used to speak in her videos but she doesn't upload much and it's usually just flip throughs. ColoringKaria speaks in all her videos and I love them but she doesn't have a lot of color alongs. and I love Dede's live streams but sometimes you don't want to watch a recorded live stream but she is amazingly talented. Chris Cheng, Ikas coloring, Julies colorful world, etc. are all amazingly talented but they never SPEAK! I want to hear your techniques you are showing/teaching, not just see them. so I am super glad I found you! you are super talented and you use items that I already have! everybody wants to use the polychromos which I know are amazing but you can't beat the blendability of prismas! the softness is a bad thing to some and a good thing to others. I think the soft cores are the best. and you should expect some breakage. you can't expect to have such a soft pencil core that blends so great without it being somewhat fragile! the main reason I love them other than the seamless blending, is that they don't leave pencil marks. they can look so smooth, you would think they were markers. no offense to those who prefer the polychromos but I, personally prefer not to see all those pencil marks. I prefer my pencil to be like butter. I saved up for forever and bought the 150 set of prismacolor premier pencils and they are the best investment I have ever made for coloring and art supplies. and out of my 150 set which I've had for almost a year and are the newer ones that ppl complain about, but I've had hardly any breaking at all. the main thing I did to keep them from breaking, besides handling them carefully was buy a $5 x-acto sharpener at Walmart. super cheap but amazing! it has 5he turn handle and is set up like the sharpeners that are in schools where u stick the pencil in and turn the handle and it grinds, instead of shaves, the pencil sharp. it has suction that sucks it to your desk or table so it's steady which is important with prismas as they are easily broken but this made a world of difference for the 3 or 4 (out of 150) pencils that seemed to break off at the tip everything. I also figured out that by putting them in the microwave for 10 to 15 secs would rebond the core and stop all breakage so I highly recommend those things. and I love the magical jungle. I bought it pretty cheap at Walmart. Peta had said she would do another real time color along in the magical jungle but never did. so I'm so glad you are because I love informative color alongs that teach you so much and make you feel as though you are a part of a community who are all coloring together. but sorry about my long rant! lol. it's just so nice to find another coloring youtuber who actually speaks in her videos and are really teaching some amazing techniques and are extremely talented like peta! tfs!😊
Hey there! Thanks for your kind words! Yes, my channel is very much designed to be user-friendly and a teaching tool for folks. Real-time is very helpful and I try to take everybody through my process step-by-step. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!!
Boy. I have so enjoyed this tutorial. I really had trouble with leaves. I would get to a point and now wanting them to stand out. Espresso is it. I have Primas but my mistake was to buy a larger set. Found myself buying single ones. Now I have 120 Faber Castell Polychrome pencils and the same brand 120 watercolor pencils. So I should be able to create the same colors or close to it. I am new to your channel. ❤️👏👍
thank you for the tutorial - one of the best I have seen - explaining and showing how you were coloring & what colors you were using on the leaves was great - also using prismas which alot of people have, not the Holbein's, Brunzeal's, Caran Pablo's & Luminance - Thank you!
I really want to thank you so much for the real time videos. I am so sick of watching the ones that fly by like severe wind gusts. You give me the confidence to use my books . THANK you for your instruction.💐🤗🤗
I love this and I'm only 5 minutes into the video. Love the explanations and you explaining your process. And don't even get me started on how much I love real time☺. Your channel is great and I thank you over and over!!
Hi Rachel I love watching your videos. They are very helpful. I only have FC Polychromos and Derwent pencils except for one Prismacolor which is Black Cherry. I can buy Prismacolor from an art shop in Canberra, but as it’s two hours drive away, I don’t get up there often. Can I just make an observation which is not meant to offend. If you look closely at many plants’ leaves, you will notice that the mid-vein is often a pale colour, not dark. Many colourists use a dark colour. 😳
I have just found your colouring videos and really enjoying how you communicate what you do. I am new to adult colouring and am using this video to colour along to as you do it. My question relates to the next episode. Did you do an episode after this one where some of the other leaves and flowers were done? I went to the next dated 3rd March and many of the flowers are already done. Did I miss and episode? thank you?
Hello there, Hilary! Thank you so much for your kind words! I really enjoy doing the videos and am so glad that folks are finding them useful to watch. Oh and no, you didn't miss a video. When I do a full coloring page, I'm only able to show about 50%-75% of the coloring, otherwise the videos would be really, really long, so I try to focus on the things I think would be most helpful or beneficial to show. Good luck and thanks again!
Hi Rachael I love your coloring and since I am a beginner it is very helpful. I have been looking for the colorless blending pencil on Amazon and I can't find it. Can you tell me where I can find one? I will be following you and learning more and more. THANKS
Elizabeth Cohen hi, I went to Amazon and typed in Prismacolor colorless blender and they popped right up. They are sold individually or in package of two. They are amazing and always part of my sets of pencils. Good luck and keep coloring!
I just started watching Pencilstash videos. They're great! After watching this I'm excited to do the leaves in my new Magical Jungle coloring book. Oh and thanks for the chance to win the giveaway. :)

Great leaf coloring ideas. I really like the "real time" I feel as though I could follow along, if I had supplies. Question, you drew in the sharpie veins after you used the wax pencils, 1. Does it seep through the wax or melt it? and 2. Would it be advisable to draw in extra lines before coloring? By the way, you have a very soothing voice. Have a nice day.
Hi I'm Joe, I watched my first video of you a while back. It was the one where you we're showing how to do flowers. I've been busy and don't recall what it was called. But I was wondering would it be possible for you to do a video on how to do night sky? I.E dusk, dawn, and night time skies?
I love your videos! I don't know about everyone else, but I would love to see your coloring studio! Maybe you can do a video just on your studio? Just a thought. But I always learn a lot of great techniques from you!
LOL! you may want to change your description. Pretty sure that book is not Romantic Country - A Second Tale by Eriy. Nevertheless, lovely coloring! Made me subscribe.
Good catch!! Copy/paste will get you in trouble every time :) I just revised that and thanks so much for pointing that out. And thanks for watching and subscribing!

Hi, I just subscribe to your channel and I would like to tell you how much does it mean to me you're sharing your tecnics and explain it so nicely. When I saw it was a video with explanation and with time enough to it side by side I immediately grab my coloring book and stared to color, jejeje as crazy as it sound was a nice exercise I hope you continuos doing so if you can. I personally think a person who like to share is a person with hight spirituality. Thanks so much.
I have just started watching your videos, but this video brings up a question for me. Can you explain where and how to use shadows? (Or point me to a video that already has that? Also, what does "dirty it up a bit" actually mean? Thank you.
Awesome video...!!! I love your technique and you explain it so well to some of us non artists lol...thank you so much!!! Do you have any background in art?
Hey there, thanks so much for your kind words! Not classically trained, but always a student and always loved drawing and sketch work since I was very young. I'm so lucky to get to share my love for it with you guys!
I think this is the third vid I've watched today, love your technique. Instructions are great as well. I hope this is not a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway, how do you decide in gradient technique when to start with light and when to start for example in the coleus leaf with the magenta centre? Is there a rule of thumb some other reason. I am new to gradient colouring but it truly makes the world of difference. Thanks for sharing your beautiful art.
Thanks Karen! I don't know if there's a right or wrong way to do it, but I like starting with my lightest color in order to be conservative, as I know that I can always blend into or layer more on top of a lighter color than a darker. Once I've put on my light color, I usually then go to the darkest, and then to that middle or 3rd color to bring it all together. That's just the way I do it, but personally I've always said that its whatever works best for you! And thank you so much for your kind words and for watching the channel!
Karen Clement Hi I just wanted to let you know that if you have a Facebook ..I have a group called Just Color! Just a place for adult colorers to share their work and there's monthly contests. This month's contest prize is a 15 dollar amazon gift code! Hope to see you there :)

Thank you so so much for doing a real time leaf episode. After many hours scouring through speed through videos i am so thankful. I am now currently binge watching your channel for more tips :)
THAT IS SO NICE! Thanks so much, really appreciate your kind words and support!
There’s nothing like a good binge watch! Lol
I don’t really watch many time lapse videos for all my subscriptions. I don’t learn from them. I hope you will continue your streams in real time. I really enjoyed this stream. 💕
I love the real time tutorials that you have done. Thank you for all your work.
I love that you explain what you are doing. So many books and so many leaves. Thanks for the tutorial!
I like that you explain why you choose ea. color and your voice is very pleasant.
This video is one of the most helpful I’ve seen as a new colorist. Thank you!
I love how you explain every detail. Thank you
Awesome job. I really needed to watch a video for coloring a lot better and knowing what colors goes with each other.
Well now im fine, im not the only one with a really short chartreuse. I use it a lot! One of my faves
I love your colors for the leaves . You have inspired me .
Thank you.
+Connie Owen what kind words, so thank you so much! Glad you're enjoy the videos!
Love Love Love this episode!!!! gonna color along with you soon for one of my next projects.
Thanks 👏✍️ You Rock!!
Each time I come across one of those little guys, I ask "what are you trying to tell me little guy?".
lol. I’d like to know the answer too. “What are you trying to tell me little guy” made me laugh.
Oh my, that is beautiful! You do such exquisite work. :) I love all of Johanna's books but am partial to her Christmas one and Lost Ocean.
Rachel M.
Fantastic tutorial Rachel! I really learned a lot especially with the pink leaves. Thank you for showing my work as well... :-)
Thanks for a great video love all those greens just interesting seeing you blend them all together
Secret garden is a great book 👍👍
Wonderful video! I also love Secret Garden and have colored lots of pages in it. Looking forward to the next video. Have a great week!
Thanks for finally doing a Johanna Basford video! I love it!
I have Prismacolor 132 set. I do not have 109 Prussian Green. What color would I use to replace it?
I really enjoyed this video and you. Thank you
Your leaves are very pretty. Thank you! Looking forward to watching the next video.
I love Jenna basford I have all her books! Magical jungle, secret ocean, and secret garden!
I really loved your video, and all the others as well, it's great that it is in real time that makes it so much easier to follow.
Great video!!!! I love the real time and your explanation. Your coloring technique is also very good, thank you for sharing! Would love to see more of this,
Excellent tutorial! Saved as a go to learning tool. Thank you Rachel!
Did you ever get the part 2 of the leaves tutorial. Sure would be nice to see it. Thanks for you for your instructions, very helpful for us beginners.!!

Thanks for the tutorial. I really enjoyed watching the video
Thank you for doing this in REAL TIME!!!!!
I enjoyed how you explain while coloring and teached.
I really want to thank you so much for the real time videos. I am so sick of watching the ones that fly by like severe wind gusts. You give me the confidence to use my books . THANK you for your instruction.💐🤗🤗
I agree! Lots more real time videos to come.
Thank you for all the 'leaf' ideas
I love this and I'm only 5 minutes into the video. Love the explanations and you explaining your process. And don't even get me started on how much I love real time☺. Your channel is great and I thank you over and over!!
OH GOOD! So glad the real time is helpful and I'll be doing more of this type of video for sure.
Thank you for watching and all your kind words!
I love your blending techniques. I've learned so much from your videos. Thanks again
Thanks!! So glad you're enjoying! Thanks for watching
You're welcome. Will the winners be announced during a live drawing? If so when tomorrow?

Hi Rachael
I love your coloring and since I am a beginner it is very helpful.
I would give you an apple if I could. Your the perfect teacher! So glad success is pouring your way! Kathy
That is so sweet, thank you!!!! Apples are seriously my favorite food, too by the way :)

I love this video and finally got to start this book. Would love another Magical Jungle or Enchanted Forest video! Thanks :-)
Great tutorial. I was glad to see how you did the “watermelon” leaves as I’ve been wanting to do those.
I love your videos! I don't know about everyone else, but I would love to see your coloring studio! Maybe you can do a video just on your studio? Just a thought. But I always learn a lot of great techniques from you!
So beautiful my favorite is the magenta leaf 🤩🤩🤩🤩 wowza!!!
Thank you, this is so helpful. I agree, real time is great!
Love it! Could you please suggest some Polychromos green combos for leaves.I struggle with picking out Colours for the base, shadow and highlight.
Yes! Let me pull some and I'll get back to you!
LOL! you may want to change your description.
Sua voz é doce, esse vídeo é anti estres

What can I use instead of cream if I can’t find it in open stock?
Hi, I just subscribe to your channel and I would like to tell you how much does it mean to me you're sharing your tecnics and explain it so nicely. When I saw it was a video with explanation and with time enough to it side by side I immediately grab my coloring book and stared to color, jejeje as crazy as it sound was a nice exercise I hope you continuos doing so if you can. I personally think a person who like to share is a person with hight spirituality. Thanks so much.
That is so sweet, thank you!!!
Thanks for such a good tutorial. I learned a lot from you.
I much prefer the espresso shading versus a black pencil shading! Looks more natural to me.
Me too! Espresso is definitely a go-to color for me for shading. Thanks for watching!
So what pencils are the best to use in Johanna Bashford colouring books, Polychromos or Prismacolor
