Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge one of the three devis and wife of God Brahma
Saraswati Puja is celebrated on Vasantha Panchami (fifth day of spring) in her honour and mark the day by helping young children learn how to write alphabet.
Saraswati is also called mother of Vedas
She is depicted as a beautiful woman dressed in pure white with white Lotus and white Swan. White colour symbolises Sattwa guna or purity
Saraswati in her four hands holds pustaka, mala, water pot and Veena.
Saraswati is the goddess that embodies knowledge, arts, music, melody, muse, language, eloquence, creative work and anything whose flow purifies the essence and self of a person.
Saraswati- by some interpretation ( Sara means essence ,Swa means self )she who helps realise the essence of self.
Saraswati is also known as
Veena vadini (player of Veena)
Pustakahastini (who carries books)
Hamsa Vahini (whose vahana is swan)
Vameshwari (goddess of letters)
Kavi jihvagra vasini(one who dwells on the tongue of poets) etc.
The images of goddess Saraswati are not only found in temples of India but also in those of Southeast Asia, Indonesia, China and Japan.
