- Ballet artist Sergei Polunin (Сергей Полунин) performing "Sacre" at the III Women's Forum in Kuzbass, Kemerovo on May 31st, 2024. He also performed 2 other dances and gave a brief interview (to be posted separately). "Sacre" is an approximately 30-minute solo ballet based on Vaslav Nijinsky's "The Rite of Spring" and inspired by Nijinsky's struggles and his art.

I remember the 2021 Transylvania International Film Festival, and Sergei Polunin's a special guest; Sergei performed Sacré completely and spectacularly ❤. I specifically admire Polunin, especially when he does those pulse-racing leaps & impressive revoltade turns ❤❤❤! Thank you @ India Ink for sharing ❤😊.
I'm glad you enjoyed! It is interesting to compare his performances - because it's always a bit different each time. Sergei often varies the choreography in some way and there are always some difference brought by the stage and lighting at different venues.
The TIFF festival is a very dynamic performance, and includes the lighting effects that weren't possible with the limitations of the stage Sergei is performing on here in this 2024 performance. While this 2024 performance is just as powerful and emotional, I think, it feels a little more intimate. Like I said - it's always a little different!
I agree @ India Ink, Sacré is a very powerful performance by Sergei Polunin; it's fascinating watching Polunin as he changes his rhythm, speed and direction unpredictably! He dances to Igor Stravinsky's music which has no rhythm, melody, but just two or three different notes that are out of place. Stravinsky's Sacré is an example of Modernism in Music; and Stravinsky's an important, influential composer of the 20th Century ❤. Polunin, too, is outstanding in his field; a world-famous dancer, he is reputed to be the best dancer of his generation ❤❤❤! Thank you as always @ India ink ❤😊.
I should add- I love Sergei’s quieter movements and just the overall way he moves (so much expression and grace in his arms and shoulder movements, and his face! And the beautiful lines he makes with his whole body…) like you, I also find Sergei’s leaps and revoltades exciting. (Revoltade 540 🔥)

Does Sergei collaborate with the choreographer? How is the performance brought to its final performance? Does choreographer choose the music and the costume, also the props?
It is a physically demanding dance and it is poetry and biography. Brilliant!
All those details depend on the choreographer and the piece. For Sacre, I know the prop as well as the staging (leaves and rope) were choreographer, Yuka Oishi’s, design, the rope meant to evoke a Sumo ring and the leaves meant to represent the circle of life, I believe. She chose and built the dance on the music, using elements from Nijinsky’s life and imagery from his dances as well as from her life and Sergei’s life. I don’t know how the costume was chosen. But it’s possible she suggested it. (She also choreographed Rasputin and I know she chose the costume designer for that ballet.) His Sacre costume has changed a little since the first show- it’s tighter than his original costume, and the camouflage design is different.
As far as collaboration, it depends on the choreographer on how much Sergei collaborates with the original creation, but he always does his own take on it when he dances for his own productions.
In the case of Sacre, Yuka Oishi said it was like cooking- she prepared the “dish” and Sergei added the “spices”. She created the overall piece and worked out the final details with Sergei and then he’s free to make his own modifications depending on how he feels when he’s performing. (I actually have two other performances of Sacre on my channel and you can compare the performance to see what kind of changes he makes. Having freedom to vary the choreography helps him stay interested in dancing the same part over and over.)
And yes, it’s a very physically demanding performance that requires an uncommon stamina and stage presence! That’s our Sergei. ❤️

Sergei's next onstage performance will be in Sevastopol tomorrow (June 22nd). He will play the Prince in the Sevastopol Academy's production of Snow White. (It will be a small role, since the show is meant to showcase the students and to give them experience.) But I think the show is sold out for the day he is performing. After that, so far he only has 2 performances scheduled on his website, both in September. "Rasputin" in Belgrade on September 7th and "Master and Margarita" in Moscow on September 28th.
However, production preparations for a new ballet, "Wuthering Heights" commissioned by the Sevastopol State Opera and Ballet Theater, starring Sergei Polunin and choreographed by Jonah Cook, are being completed. According to the composer, Tatyana Shatkovskaya, there is supposed to be a general run-through in Moscow at the beginning of July. At the end of July the premiere is supposed to take place in Crimea, in Chersonesus. Official dates have not yet been announced. He also will likely add more tour dates to his schedule soon, so it's good to check his website regularly for any added any dates. He also posts tour updates on his social media on VK, Telegram, Instagram and Facebook.

It was choreographed by Yuka Oishi. (As stated in the video description.) She is a choreographer Sergei enjoys working with and one of the few who has been available to work with him, since many are already working for ballet companies and are booked years in advance.
Sacre isn’t a classical ballet and it’s not meant to be. Of course, it isn’t enjoyable for everyone - I had to see it a couple of times before I connected with it myself, but now it’s one of Sergei’s dances I would like to see live. But if all you see is wild acrobatics and you feel nothing of what this piece is about, it’s your loss.

Отрадно найти единомышленника в этом вопросе. По-моему, прочие многие просто ослеплены безусловным обожанием. "Не сотвори себе кумира", как известно. В классическом репертуаре он, конечно, бесподобен. Мне думается, сейчас он все еще в сложном поиске самого себя, и я желаю ему от всего сердца обрести в себе это главное зерно.
