That was a real eye opener, it truly changed the way the blue jeans mile was run. Nothing short of legendary and, in my opinion, puts Spencer on the same level as Bekele, Kipchoge, Bolt etc.

FFS. This occurred at altitude. People underestimate how much that matters. The air is so thin there you literally float. The Greatest achievement is Bolt. Head wind, and smashed the world record. Or Matt Shirvington running 10.03 in the commonwealth games in 1998 as a white kid against black men and came 4th. Truly extraordinary. More impressive than any black athletes' achievements for sure.
M M bolt had a tailwind when he did the 9.58. But def still a good argument for Bolt to be top. But to say the other guy’s 4th place race is a great achievement just because he’s white is ridiculous. No one has even heard of that guy.

The only reason this man achieved what he did as the fastest white man in history at the age of 19 is because he had the Australian flag on his chest. You will never know what that means. Carl Lewis after winning 50 plus straight long jump competitions and jumping over 8.85 meters in three jumps that day gets beat by Mike Powell who breaks the world record at 8.95 is right up there. The expression on Lewis' face is priceless

But all Bubka's best performances were in closed training sessions - where claimed to have jumped over 6.25m several times. How can you praise a performance, when the performer boasts that it is far from his best?
@@JimmyOlsson Mondo is a great jumper and owns the WR.....but you still have to take into account that the top poles today are quite a bit superior to those of S.Bubka. He was a physical monster.
Van Niekerk broke the WR and made sub 43 seem like a real possibility in an Olympic final. From lane 8. Running totally blind to the competition. Pretty legendary.

No, Zatopek made the front page many times.
I remember reading the Sports Illustrated article about that feat. It talked about how slowly and incrementally the long jump record changed, by inches at a time, and then Beamon broke it by almost two feet. They said he took off in 1968 and landed in the 21st Century. For some reason, those words and that imagery have stayed with me all these years.

I saw an analysis once that said that Beamon was able to achieve his jump because he took off at an almost 45° angle. Most long jumpers take off a lot shallower, and aren’t able to maximize their jumps.
Totally agree... And I watched it live, when I was on the track team in college. It was amazing then and it still looks amazing now. I remember him collapsing after finding out the distance.
Not to mention his "walk" back after the jump. Legendary. Almost better than the jump itself.

I thought Johnson's record of 19.32 was more impressive. He was in totally uncharted territory. Nobody will improve the 200m record by that much again (0.34 secs)

He put on running exhibitions to raise enough to get him a steamer ride to New Orleans, where he gambled away all his money. He had 677 miles to go. So he RAN it (mostly), arriving in street clothes at the stadium about an hour before the race. They cut his pants down to shorts. Then he began to run the marathon...and came in 4th. I agree with number 1, but I think FloJo's 100 m deserves a place on this list. 31 years later and it still stands today, that's dominant.

Every female WR set in the 1980's by Eastern Bloc athletes was drug assisted. Every Eastern Bloc country had a state supported drug program for it's top athletes. It's no secret anymore. There is lots of testimony and evidence from people who were in involved as coaches, athletes and administrators. None of those performances should even count as world records. If we did count them all then her HJ record would deserve some mention although someone has jumped within 1 cm of it so it's not as dominant as some of the other long standing records.

Maybe true maybe not but Kostadinova is still alive and active in the ministry of sports of BG government. The hardest WR to beat is on the 3000m by Komen, many athletes try but not.

Had they been run in the Olympics or the worlds unaided by pacesetters, they would have been extraordinary.

In my opinion bekele’s 10 000m is the number 1. I think no one will never beat it because now if you run 30-40 sec slower its a CRAZY time!

The last two years have been Legendary in terms of world records, especially for women. Please make a video about them!! This season with Thompson Hera, Amusan, McLaughlin, Rojas... A lot has happened and it was BEAUTIFUL!
I think one athlete worth mentioning, even as an honorable mention, is Alberto Juantorena's performance at the 1972 Summer Olympics. He won both the 400 and 800 meters and in winning the 800, set a new world record and upset America's Rick Wohlhuter, who was favored in the event. The significance of the win is that Juantorena was the first runner in Olympic history to perform this double, moving up from the sprint distance of 400 meters to, what was considered, a middle distance specialty.
Michael Johnson's 19.32 is a crucial omission. It is easily one of the most talked about olympic moments in track and field.
What about Emil Zatopek winning gold in the 5K, 10K and, running it for the first time, the marathon in the 1952 Olympics. Unbelievable!

sights are...well manipulated by over response to a virus. I think athletes would probably have been ok to compete with their health being so strong, but it would have to been done without the fans. So really they canceled the Olympics mainly due to not being able to make money off the fans. A lot of athletes were ready to compete and were denied.

One thing you forgot to mention here. Bob Beamon broke the existing world record by 6.59%, the greatest world record improvement in history. It wasn’t just a great jump. It was the greatest athletic performance in human history!

I'm glad you put Beamon no.1. I remember seeing that jump on television and seeing the 8.90 come up: I thought that couldn't be what he jumped, it must be his bib number. I didn't know exactly how far it was, but it was a long way past the 8.35 that was the world record. But what about Uwe Hohn? They had to change the implement after that.

Those two world records were not run in the Olympics or world championships where they do not use pacesetters. Henry Rono broke four world records in four different distances surpasses both the 5000 m and 10000 m !doubles by either Haile Gebreselassie and Kenenisa Bekele.
In the summer of 1978 in a stretch of 81 days, Henry Rono of Kenya broke his records without pacesetters! In the 81 days stretch of the summer of 1978 Henry Rono of Kenya while a Sophomore at the Washington State University broke the world records in 5,000 m, 3,000 m Steeplechase, 10,000 m, and 3,000 m in that order. None of the records used any pace setters.
It can be remembered that Henry Rono was denied to showcase his incredible form to the world i n long distance running due to two Olympic boycotts. In 1976 the Kenyan Olympic team that included the great Henry Rono had already arrived in Edmonton, Canada for the Olympics only for the entire African continent to at the games to be recalled to boycott the Olympics due to sporting contacts with apartheid South Africa. In 1980 Moscow Olympics, Kenya joined yet another Olympics in a row led by the United States protesting the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan. Henry Rono was completely devastated by this second boycott by Kenya.
as good as keni is he "only" improved on hailes world records 2 seconds in the 5000 and i think 5 seconds in the 10.000. this is not as earth-shattering as most of this records

He simply valued records made in the Olympics such as David Rudisha's epic 800 m in 2012 London on the big stage and not the Monza Breaking 2, INEOS 159 or any other paced races. Even the great El Guerrouj is not on the list due to that reason, I believe.

No, he didn't show his full potential in that race, he ran a 7 min 20s for the 3000m so he was able to run 7 min 50s for the 2 miles. But maybe his 3000m record should be in that list because it is really huge.
@@aua6330 still, Komen ran under 8 mins, twice. But ya, the 3,000 record is a freak of a record, much better than Beman's back in 1968. To me, it is by far the best record in the books.

Your matrix is wrong you concentrate of % when in fact it should be length of time the record has stood together with how close a competitor has come since the record. I don't know much about jumps but 47.60 is INSANE. World Champs or Olympics are generally won with a 49, sometimes a low 50 is enough. 48s are SUPER rare, as an example there was a gap from 2010 to 2017 where not a single 48 second time was run (between Sanya Richards-Ross' 48.83 in Brussels 2009 to Shaunae Miller-Uibo's 48.97 in 2018). These are high 48s, a high 48 is sometimes once in a decade, there are only 6 athletes under 48.50 ever and Marita is 47 MID, like wtf?!

From the 1988 Seoul Olympics until today, 2019, Joyner's records in both 100M (10.49sec) and 200M (21.34sec) remained unbeaten... and the way she ran those distances remained unmatched and unbeaten until this day... That's a full 31 years!

I would have put 100M 10:49 and 200M 21:34 World Records by Florence Griffith Joyner 1988 Seoul Olympics as the most Iconic. No woman has ever come near them and to mention, her upright thrust running style is what every today coach is teaching. This clearly shows that the Late Flojo was way ahead of her time.

Correction to 4, Usain Bolt had a tailwind of +0.9m/s, it's his 200m world record of 19.19s that was against a headwind of -0.3m/s. Yohan Blake ran the fastest headwind 100m time with 9.69s with -0.1m/s.

As a fanatic of any athletic events and records, I suggest you to consider by putting the Sotomayor’s recorded as a number one because I don’t think anyone can overpasses 2:45m Since Sotomayor’s, cubans call him “Saltamayor”, which means “ higher jumper “(most definitely making the assumption no one can break his record) 2:39m has been even the hardest high for Olympic gold and glory. When Sotomayor’s record can be broken? Well, the frog having wings to fly, never!

Uwe Hohn’s 104m javelin throw is very rarely mentioned, but they even had to increase the weight of the javelin to make the event safer after his throw....that has to be worth a mention .

It would be nice to have Bubka on the list. Measurements are often confusing to people of different cultures but the imperial 20ft and the metric 6m are both nice round numbers and close enough to one another to get everyone's attention. A 20ft/6m jump with naught but a pole is all but unimaginable. An interesting exercise is to hang a tape measure out of a window to illustrate just exactly how high 20 ft/6m really is. I do it from time to time to the shock and awe of anyone present. I now look forward to watching young Armand “Mondo” Duplantis' progress.

It beat the wr by .5 metres, that whole meet there were multiple wind illegal jumps longer than that too
There was 0.3 wind Carl Lewis jumped into a 0.2 wind with an 8.87 reverse the wind and results would have been different
@Thomas Dematteo You are GREATLY exaggerating the difference .5 m/s wind makes on a jump. That might make up 1 cm each way at most. Powell would be #1 and the WR holder either way

I might have added the Women's 4 X 400 meter relay from 1988 where the top 2 teams not only set the world record, BUT, the record has not been broken since.
I would be so excited to have this but highschool records.
I would add Sergey Bubka (pole vault) breaking the world record 35 times.
Well, I am an old chap so for me the 1954 Roger Bannister sub 4 minute mile result was a wonderful achievement. I still remember the last lap and the excitement in the crowd.

About number 4: Usain Bolt had a tailwind of +0.9 m/s. It's Yohan Blake who had a headwind of -0.1 m/s in his 9.69s performance. This is a mistake which should be corrected.

I knew Bob Beamon's jump was going to be number 1. Hicham El Guerrouj deserves to be on this list with both his 1500 meter record and mile record which have stood 21 and 20 years now. 1998 and 1999. In terms of feats, I think we should always remember the great Jim Thorpe who won both the Decathlon and Pentathlon in the 1912 Olympics. Eric Heiden won the 500, 1000, 1500, 5000 and 10,000 meters speed skating in a single Olympics in 1980.
jesse owens' long jump lasted 25 years if longevity is to be the measure. We run into problem with the ladies records from the 80s using that standard of course.
Bubka wasn't too shabby himself. He went 6m in 85'. Without anybody to push him competitively he raised that to over 6m14. And he dominated for over 2 decades arguably. FLO JO IS #1! Not only were her 1988 Olympic 100m and 200m Gold Medal winning World Records SUPERHUMAN, they are still unchallenged after 30+ years! Beamon was awesome but his record was broken.

Beamon was incredible and it's amazing his record was broken but it was. Flo Jo set her records over 30 years ago, in extremely competitive events, with unsubstantiated attacks trying to take her down and is still untouched.

Florence Griffith Joyner's records are the most fascinating and iconic! Her form was jaw dropping effective. Her bold and vibrant outfits made her even more spectacular.
There are a lot of doubters who malign her with their speculations and stupidity, as they have absolutely no proof about use of performance enhancing drugs.
It is funny to see how doubters of Florence clean career and records are malign, speculators and stupid, while doubting how some East German athletes (Marita Koch for instance) is reasonable. Florence Griffith was a good athlete. Very good actually, but not impressive to win Olympic Games or World Championships. Suddenly she explode and once the IAAF announced random drug tests she stopped her career. Her trainer (Bob Kersee) has been involved in many accusations of doping (the most significant one Gwen Torrance who accused him to make fraud with Gail Deevers and Irina Privalova.
She was "juicing"...caused her death at age 38!

And because I don´t believe in miracles, I really think that in one point of her life, surrounded by people involved in drugs abuse, her perfomance dramatically changed. Her best time in the 100 meters prior to 1988 was relatively modest 10.96, currently the 509th best time ever. In the 200, her best before 1988 had been 21.96, now the 75th best time ever. Both of these times were from 1987. Going back further, her performances had garnered a silver medal in 200 meters in the 1984 Games, but her times were not remarkable. In the 100 meters, her best time before 1987 is now the 704th best time ever. Suddenly she made an incredible progress. Training? Drugs? Again, I do not believe in miracles
