I remember watching this TV broadcast when I was a high school student. I took a VHS recording of this and watched it over and over again. Back then I didn't know the standard, and I just knew YoYo Ma has a reputation. I wanted to learn how to play the cello by watching him. Now, nearly 30 years later, I can appreciate how good this ensemble really is. And how rich emotions, Ma's cello is conveying. Cello is definitely not the main thing in this music, but his cello part is so juicy and so good. In an interview on the same show, Ma explained a Japanese concept he just learned about, called "Mono-no Aware." The Japanese can get what it means, but it's very hard to explain. In Ma's account, as far as I remember, the concept was about the mixture of opposing emotions caused by beauty. He explained that this music by Mozart is very happy and lovely for many people, but there are moments when it shows deep sadness. To give us an example, I think he mentioned that this tune was used in the funeral of Pablo Casals (I hope I'm not making this up).
+mmm It's pretty hard to have much facial expression with a clarinet in your mouth LOL. The same goes (if to a lesser extent) for upper strings, e.g. violin/viola. I play both....my wife calls me "stone face" when I play, LOL.
Hands down my favorite rendition of this to date..... and I love Sabine Meyer......... (sorry, Sabine......)...... the patience here really draws out the heart of Mozart so much without dragging........ amazing!
I heard this today on NPR and it referred to the final showing of 'MASH' and although I don't really recall the episode, I was struck with the beauty of the music. Thank you for the posting.
My very first introduction to the clarinet to which I sub- consciously added the two additional letters to thus making the instrument feminine presumably. I vainly attempted to play said instrument , but despite battling away for a year or so all I really achieved was sore lips and as it was happening at a co-ed friends boarding school, I decided to achieve this outcome a more tasty way ..... This is sublime music-making hope you enjoy such ravishing music at the start of a very interesting new year
So gorgeous. Yokokawa plays beautifully. Thank you for making it available to the world! But, where was this recorded? I've been fortunate to perform at a number of halls in Japan, and I just want to satisfy my curiosity.
THEODORE WOROZBYT. It appears that the word 'song' has changed its meaning to mean 'a piece of music' rather than something that is sung. Maybe because computer music playing software refer to individual parts of a music album as songs. After all, pop music consists almost entirely of songs - i. e. most pop music is sung.
Pamela Frank, she didn't look Japanese or Asian to me, but maybe I am wrong. I give them credit 35 minutes of sitting in a chair, nothing to drink, can't move. thats tough I think. I noticed when the woman on the end, I assume Pamela Frank, when she gets up you can tell she is stiff a little and that's understandable. Great playing of this classic song.
A clarinet tone character is very hard to describe in words like the taste of a wine. I just liked Mr. Yokokawa's stone and his interpretation.
Maestro Yokokawa is one of the greatest treasures of the music life in Japan... Bravissimo, Maestro!!!
The second movement is VERY well played. While listening I had the impression that time had stopped
This clarinetist is simply gorgeous - he does a beautiful, wonderful job. Thank you Mr. Yokokawa! Wonderful job!

Yoyo ma (cello) seems to be the one most enjoying the performance. I love to see his facial expressions.

Just a very beautiful rendition of one of my all time favorites
That was a superb performance.
There are few violinists that grab my ear like Pamela Frank does. Stunning.
Andrew Grishaw the sweetness in her sound is stunning!!!! You should listen to her recording of Dvorak’s Violin concerto😊
So beautiful!!

The series finale, “Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen”. 😊

elegant sweetness - a graceful freedom - and the colors rich combining earth and sky - ah Wolfgang
Absolutely stunning, emotional performance.
so beautiful. I have no words.

wow, yoyo ma was in this?
Just adore this :)
Listen to the first two bars: Doesn’t that pretty melody sound like “The Sidewalks Of New York”?
Mozart, composing for himself !
Beautiful music, beautifully played. Both Mozart and Brahms wrote great music for the clarinet late, late. Can someone tell me the why.
Clarinet is a wise old instrument - autumnal whereas the flute is vernal.
Mike Zhai ff
I think they both met and were inspired by virtuoso clarinettists as mature composers. We owe a lot to Anton Stadler and Richard Muhlfeld.

kystars. She probably is not Japanese.
Pamela Frank is American. She had a great career until sidelined by a hand injury in 2001 - making a comeback a decade later...
Umberto Tosi and now is an amazing professor at Curtis!
Anagram for Mozart: Mr. A to Z!

….scusa, MA USA IL CLARINETTO DI BASSETTO, a quel che ne so…

It's blocked... :(
Estas en China?
Pamela Frank is married to physical therapist Howard Nelson; I wouldn't mind giving her some "physical" therapy!
