Hi everyone I just wanted to send out an up date on the Port Bolster Drive-in which by the way is called Irwin Drive-in I believe. Well she has been given a new lease on life.
I just live up the road and I had noticed some equipment coming in and the treeline being extended.
So with a little digging I found out that she was bought and is now in renovation stages.
The old picture building where the old camera was shown in the video, is demolished. Not sure about the camera, but The grounds are now set up with rows of parking mounds for parking.
She is expected to open later in 2022.
Some good news for a change...

Here in So. California, I worked four years at a Drive In Theatre. There were many at that time, field was paved and offices sometimes were in the screen tower.
Almost all drive-ins are now gone, giving way to walk-ins. Land was worth more than running a theatre and now are shopping centers!
Has fun times working there right out of high school.

First dates in the early 70s.
As a kid in the late 50s with my parents. I never saw a playground. That doesn't mean there wasn't one . Out of 5 of my siblings I can't imagine that at least one of us never noticed one . Lol . I'm curious now. The Mitchell Drive In , Hammond , Louisiana. 50s through 70s maybe 80s .

@@jenniehughes6927 we have one left here in Buffalo NY. We use to have 5 and all of them had play grounds right under the screen so the kids could play up until just before dusk. Our last Drive Inn has a miniature golf course in front now under the main screen and there are 4 screens. The food is great but the candy is expensive. I could get what they want 5 dollars a box of candy for a dollar a box at family dollar or dollar general.

Canada has the second largest number at 36 remaining Drive-In theatres. Sixteen of the 37 remaining Drive-In’s in Canada are located in the province of Ontario. Many Drive-In theatres in Canada have closed down and are left abandoned never to show a film again.

Wouldn't it be great if someone could buy or take over the property? Demolish the old building and replace it with a new building for projecting the movies and the concession stand and so forth. The screen looked like it would need some repairs too, but it would be so cool if that would happen! I loved going to the Drive-In when I was a kid and would love to see them become popular again. My guess would be it just wasn't going to be worth it to try and fix everything that needed to be done. Not sure if the bank took it back, or if they hung onto it as an investment property. Pretty hefty price tag sitting where it does!

I remember growing up I've been to a few drive in theaters, now in this day and age with covid 19 you'd think they're making a comeback.
That few inches of steel and glass is good for social distancing.
Cover spots with a lil glowing paint to mark them to keep people at least 6 feet apart or 1 car space apart this way they got room to get in and out and go to the concession stands and comply with social distancing practices, teather a line or 2 to the stands depending on how many counter areas you have and just make sure there's space.
In the restrooms make urinals off limits because they're so close in rows, because of the boxes and doors and normally going number 2 is different for everyone as far as time goes cubicals are ok.
It seems to me a drive in theater is best for the pandemic.
Just like restaurants people don't need to have their masks on when they're seated because they're in the car with family or friends.
You know I got a better idea then just leaving it in the comments think I'll send a letter or Facebook the president about it if I can.
My point is drive in theaters and mult shop diners use to be part of the backbone of this country now it breaks my heart seeing what's become of them, I could cry.😢

It was my first experience with death and it freaked me out for a long time. I was 5 or 6, and I remember thinking that if somebody could die just going to a movie, we could all die at any time. Cold war kids. We all thought we were gonna be nuked at any moment anyway.

Thanks for this one Brent. I have many memories from the 70's going to the drive-in with my parents and us five kids in the family station wagon. Eveyone I've seen has a playground below the screen. There hasn't been any around where I live now for 40 years.

I miss going to the drive-in. I think the closest one to me is a 45 minute drive, although Hollywood hasn't made a movie I want to see in years. When my sons were little we'd throw a mattress in the back of the pickup and head to our local drive-in. Those were the days.

I really enjoyed this explore Brent. We had a drive-in in the community where I grew up and this video brought back fun memories. I remember those speakers you would put on the window of the car and roll it up to secure it and hope the speaker worked ! Thanks for sharing. Hugs from Ontario.

What a trip in time. I still remember the old drive in at highway 7 and Weston Road back in the early 90s before it was torn down and colossus was built. Definitely a simpler time where you could enjoy a movie, talk to people and have fun. Not have your face buried on your phone or tablet, unless you're watching Brent's videos lol. Thanks for sharing pal.

I grew up in and around an Ontario drive-in in the 80’s. Dad was the projectionist, mom used to work the concession stand where they met a long time ago. Used to sometimes let us do the changeovers, and learned to drive in the lot during the day when we’d go to fix the speakers that customers forgot to take off their windows when they left. Different times. Can still smell the projector oil and cleaning chemicals.

I know that drive-in (near our cottage). A lot of these drive-ins had to close since they couldn’t afford to convert to digital format. A shame since they are a safe way to see a movie in these COVID times☹️. There is a for sale sign on the property now, looks even worse now.

Another great video, bringing back memories of all the movies we went to see at our local Drive-In when I was a kid in Massachusetts. Ours closed down in 1979. It was torn down and now a shopping center is on the site. We used to hang the speaker in the car window, the sound was always scratchy and would occassionally break up. The concession stand had popcorn, sodas, hot dogs and a lot of candies. Fond memories. The place would be packed with cars, this was the 1970s... a different time indeed.

I grew up going to the drive in theater. My parents had a station wagon and my brother and I would wear our pjs. We would watch the first "kid" friendly feature and then usually sleep through the 2nd feature. I saw a lot of Disney and John Wayne movies at them. We still have a great place here in Fort Worth called the Coyote Drive In. Only $8 a person and they offer tasty foods at the concession stand. It was nice to go last year during COVID. 📽🍿🎞

Something to think about, If there was more drive-in movie theatre still allow that would meet the social distancing guidelines.
When I was a kid we occasionally went to the three screen driving in Barrie, but there was one closer to your house that we went to all the time, but I can’t think of the name offhand.
