I used to love crawling around back there when I was a grade school pup. I would jump down the sides of huge sand piles. Climb around on rows of old cement mixer trucks. Walk out on the green ice in winter. Never found out any more info on it but one of the things Johnson had back there in the early 70’s was the gondola from, I assume, an old navy blimp. The roof was torn off with jagged metal around the edges. Control gauges were busted out but the seats and some wasps, I recall, were still in it. The Pit was Mars and that was our spaceship. We brought a tapered cylindrical piece of the riveted aircraft aluminum home and was in my back yard for years. From pictures, I think it was the housing of where the engine strut met the side of the gondola. I guess we built one too many fires in it as we got it hot enough to melt it. Had some pretty heavy partying sessions back there in HS. I had heard a lot of stories like “the truck drivers would beat you up or run over your motorcycle” if the caught you back there. It always had an aura of a forbidden land. I believe my mother poured a pitcher over Johnson’s head after he groped her when she was a waitress at Sir Walters. She said he used to brag about sending thugs to beat up any kind of reporters who were snooping around his environmental abuses. Waiting for the Ken Burns documentary.
@@JamesWheelerjamesbwheeler This is from 15. The Patch published some articles about it becoming parkland added on to the Barnegat Trail system of old rail lines. Any time I talk to locals I try to ask if they have heard anything. Some have heard talk of apartments. Last I heard, Amazon was looking at it for a warehouse and shipping hub but passed. There has been a lot of Hasidim expanding housing along the north TR border with Lakewood where no knock laws were passed because of aggressive attempts ton purchase old farmland. Ugly condos and McMansions are popping up like mushrooms and it looks like they can’t steamroll down the pine trees fast enough. I would imagine this is the kind of land that they would love to snap up and develop but I think the cost of clean up is holding thing back for now. I did hear that they bought a big tract on Dover Rd. But do not know if it is true. patch.com/new-jersey/berkeley-nj/just-how-contaminated-beachwood-shopping-center

What’s the story? Is the water contaminated? Was or is this a superfund site? Does anyone know?
