Gary, I noticed you clipped your safety line in the front of your harness, if you fall you will be bent backwards and that will wrench your back. Clip off on your back Clip that way you will bend forward not wrenching your back! I was a structural ironworker (connector) and had to tie off when connecting. keep up the good work and I'll be watching your progress. Thanks, George Phoenix AZ. 🌵🦂
Oh my gosh you guys! 😄 That is so amazing how you two figured that out and accomplished that task! Congrats! I'm so happy for you! Sending love, support, and hugs. 🤗🤗❤❤
@@GoodwillCriminalsOfDallas he has them but just never uses them. Don't ask why. I don't think he has a reason. I think he just prefers to do it this way because it's how he always had to. Idk 🤗
Good morning Gary and Mel, it’s getting closer to where you want it, woohoo! Give yourselves a great big hug. Great job, looking forward to your next. It took me 9 years to get my home finished all those years ago, 40 yrs. Stay safe and take care.
Hopefully, by telling you this, Gary, you can be more relaxed about building your house. My father-in-law worked at the Boeing Plant in Seattle, WA, during WWII, making templates for airplane parts. So building your house should be a breeze compared to his job. Remember to breathe. ❤
Ok my verdict is the rafters are 👍🏼 Now cut off your rafter overhangs to proper size first......then go to the end of the rafter closest to the soffit of house roof run a chalk line from the outer corner of it up to the end of your ridge beam on the roof and snap a chalk line on the ice and water shield !!! Do this on both Sides. This will give you a reference point to measure your other rafters that make up your valley. Let me know if you understand what I'm telling you Gary ? AGAIN,: First thing is saw off all the rafters to soffit overhang desired and then go to the rafter closest to the existing house soffit and run a chalk line to the end of the ridge beam on the roof and Snap a chalk line on both sides and this gives you a accurate line to measure your rafters that will make up your wedge shaped valley !!!! Because the valley needs to meet at the same place as the end of the last rafter closest to the house soffit to make your roofing come out right so there's no way water can get in under anything once the roof and flashing is installed!!! Make sense Gary ? Just a helping hand bro 😉
To cut the valley Jacks, the long cut that sits on the roof will be the 12 side or leg of a framing square. Like your pitch on the mud room is a 5 and 12 pitch, the horizontal cut will be the 12 tongue of the framing square. The angle cut or under cut to fit the slope of the house roof will be what ever the angle is of the house roof. For example a 5 and 12 pitch the angle of the roof is 22 1/2 degree angle. All it amounts to is like when you cut the level cut of the birds mouth, just continue it on out. If you had a framing square big enough, you could lay the short leg against the ridge and the long cut that sits on the house roof will form a right angle. If you look at the end view of a roof, all it does is form back to back right angles. The rafter is the hypotenuse of the right angle. Just thinking out loud.
Get those fascia boards lined up. Then go from there. Angles on the way up the roof are the same.... lengths are just different. The top is the same one you already have... the bottom is a compound angle pitching 2 ways... You've done this on the back but all you gotta do it once....it's the same all the way up...There was a comment yesterday where a guy figured out the angles on short peices on used them to figure out the lengths .. you got this easy peasy.
If my eyes are not lying, i am most concerned about that short stud that his holding the ridge beam for the porch roof. My eyes saw Gary drill 3 screws on each side of that short center beam. Those screws are as short as our smallest fingers. Hence, the hold is not sufficient for the most essential stud of the entire rafters. Strongly recommend some wide L (90 degree) brackets (which i call metal bookends) be attached to both sides of the short stud. Knowing that Mother Nature can be forceful, a wild fluke wind visit of 80 miles per hour could get under that roof (where the stairs would be) and blow like a volcano. The metal bookends (as well as diagonal wood slats to form a triangle on both sides) are an extra insurance of holding onto the central stud. Press on, Good Buddy. Your work is yours and Mel's legacy to your sweet children. Adam.
Hi Mel & Gary!! Way to go guys!! Gary I must say I do admire your dedication to details. I’d rather it take longer then to be just thrown together any which way. 💜
A couple things, use your rolling scaffold it would be safer than the ladder. Second, the way you are tied off is a complete disaster, if you would fall you have no protection.the only thing you have is a false sense of safety. No tie off would be better than what you have. What you have is an invitation for injury or worse death.
Question. When you finish off the BACK deck, are you going to have stairs (like maybe a spiral staircase) so you can go down to the lower level/backyard so you don't have to cut through the house?
That's for sure. We're really trying to do this right and sometimes that means taking a few extra steps. It's worth it even if it does drive me crazy lol
Gary and Mel you have came a long way! I would like to see you two finish the roof structure and get the metal roofing down! Once you get that done there really isn't any rush on the rest of it!
Trust me - I cant wait till that day too! I wish i could make all these stupid little steps happen faster.. but i cant. One day at a time. Well get there! And i CANT WAIT!!!!!

I know nothing, but sounds like good advice
Great eye. You truly helped his back.🙏
For real, we don't want him hurt. He's an awesome father and husband. He's Kool too😊
Oh man, that sounds like it could break your back. Nice of you to offer your experience.
Oh my gosh you guys! 😄 That is so amazing how you two figured that out and accomplished that task! Congrats! I'm so happy for you! Sending love, support, and hugs. 🤗🤗❤❤
The excitement in your voices!!! Proud to get to this point.
Coming along nicely
BEAUTIFUL JOB LOOK GOOD PROUD OF YOU BOTH 👏
Save your back, get a table or get/build some sawhorses and do your cutting from there.

I was thinking the same thing...

How r u getting ur frig ,stove , ect in r ur door opening big enough
@@tylerjames7638 our door is more than big enough for a range, fridge, bed, dressers whatever. It's a standard 36" exterior door. 🤗

I must agree with George. The safety harness hookup belongs in the back.

I have an analytical mind like Gary's! I saw it when he first described it! Eddie
I'm glad to see you're using a harness and line, but 12' of rope and an 8' drop will hurt.
easy fix. add a 8' rope to the harness.
Beautiful you guys are kicking butty.
The rafters are looking awesome.
That Looking GOOD front roof😎

❤❤❤👍👍👍
Good job.
It was too nice a day for it not to go right...😊
Hi,you still need two more rafters on the front, great work being done.
Looking good Folk's 👍🏻
GARY one question why didn't you cut them rafters for the soffit and facia on the floor instead of having to cut for after installation ???
'This should be simple', but let's keep it complex so I can keep doing math? Half the story is life isn't as simple as we think some days.
That's for sure. We're really trying to do this right and sometimes that means taking a few extra steps. It's worth it even if it does drive me crazy lol
Keep up the hard work y'all 😊
Time stamp 17:21 Picture postcard perfect!.The mountains, the trees colours. So beautiful. What a sight to wake up each morning !
look's so good!
It’s far easier to cut your overhangs on the ground.

Taking shape. Hopefully the weather cooperates for you.
Awesome ❤
So good
The way you have your safety rope so long and loose you would be on the ground before it ever did you any good.
Looking good, Gary & Mel. Love it! ❤
Looking great
It looking so good guys🤗❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
look so Good
Great job and look. 👍👏
I can see it, I can see it 😀... Looks fantastic 💪❤️❤️
I am telling you what I told my hubby...as he built our house....if he built the ark, it would have sunk. He was not a carpenter. He laughed.
Wouldn't it be helpful to build the steps?
❤😊👍💪🌺🌷🌼🌹🌻❤
Just stay safe ❤😊
Gary, I respect you, you are a perfectionist and you do everything scientifically and qualitatively 👈🔨👍
I feel like he was staring at it and thinking what did I do wrong when he did nothing wrong.....😂😂😂😂
Yeeaahh ! the rafters are UP!! looking good.
