Putting a full size radio in any car is cumbersome today.
This would be great for any kinda road trip with a magnetic mount on the roof.
Thanks 4 the info
Agreed!
Not bashing having a radio in your car, I have one in every car I own. Wife and I do a lot of road trips every year and I can tell ya, I wouldn’t trust it being my only communication if there was a problem. Not because of the radio itself, There’s just not enough people using them. I’m picking up skip 90% of the time. Am, sideband, doesn’t seem to matter. Do truckers even use cb anymore?
I just put one of these in my truck. Small but really solid. Love the roger beep and digital features. Scored it new on eBay for only $50.00.
Sounds like a great deal
I have the old 19x from the 80's superior radio......Long live C.B.radio
The 19 sure has been around a while!
@@FarpointFarms And it still works great!
Thanks Eric awesome review was always!!! Data Cobra guy for 30 years as a trucker. But I do have a custom built Stryker 955.
Very cool!
@@FarpointFarmsEric, of all the mini AM FM radios, which one has in your opinion the easiest screen to see and which one performed the best for you?
Nice radio-Have you considered having a far point cb night to see how many of us could communicate from across the US?
I love that idea! Maybe I can set something up for the first week in November?
@FarpointFarms - How about trying SSB one of these Sundays when the conditions are hot?
I'm in Cali, in what State are you located?
I like it, like the roger beep too. I’ve still got my old 19 plus from the 80s. Still works too. Thanks for the video.
Glad to hear it!
I bought the cobra 19 ultra v a couple weeks ago. Cutest little radio ive ever seen. Works good. But the fact that it only has 1 knob is a real pain in the ass to change things while youre driving down the road .
That is the trade off for the size.
The radio has the same identical display as the anytone AT 500m. Has the identical menu settings as well. It wouldn't surprise me if the same company that made the any tone is now making the cobra
It's possible, but I doubt it as I can confirm that Cobra still has an actual R&D department where they are dreaming up new radios.
Your vids on CBs have inspired me to find my old CB(s) and start tinkering with them. I only really attempted to use them 1 time and it was a failure, because at that time I didn’t know how to tune the antennas but now I do. I found 1 of the CBs, a Craig L-103, connected it to my Jackery and it lit up like a 70s disco ball! It has a built in SWR meter, and the old style red digital numerals. I didn’t attempt to transmit because I didn’t have the antenna connected, but I’m stoked that it powered up and changed channels. Thankfully I found both of my antennas. I bought them at Radio Shack decades ago but I’m certain they’ll work after tuning. I have a 2nd CB but I can’t remember where I put it or even what kind it was. When the Craig is powered up, according to the built-in meter on the Jackery, it’s using 3w of power per hour. That would obviously increase when transmitting but I can get a good idea of how much power I need to provide for monitoring at least.
Those power packs are perfect for CB radio setups.
@@FarpointFarms I was able to take the Craig out to an open field to test it today. I tried all 40 channels and was not able to transmit on any of them, or hear anything. The TX LED lights up when I key the mic, and the power indicator would move ever so slightly, but I don’t believe it’s transmitting. I brought it home and hooked it back up to the Jackery and when I key the mic the power draw from the Jackery increases to 7W, but the needle on the CB itself barely budges. Is there an online forum you’d recommend to help me troubleshoot it further?
Eric I did my first range test with my friend Paul he had my Uniden Pro 401 Hand held & I had my Cobra HH50WXST his signal talking to me in his car went t o 5-6 then to 9 & back to 5 he drove 3 block's to the Grocery store then had to turn off the radio. roughly 5km from my house.
Glad to hear it! Sounds like pretty decent range too. By the way. Chevettes are really cool!
@@FarpointFarms Ya well I need to buy a SWR meter I didn't get very far with the range test my friend Paul cut out when he was turning down a road past the gas station. I got a Question when your hook up the cb to the SWR meter & the antenna to the SWR antenna jack on the back of the SWR meter can you unhook the cable's & hook your antenna back up to your cb radio after you've set it up? or do you keep it all connected. Yes Chevette's are cool car's. I had one when i was a teen. Didn't have a license so i drove it in my yard & down a dirt road behind my house. Learned how to back up a trailer with my chevette. Later Thanks
Hey Eric is 150 watt Amp way to much power? Would the FCC catch me if i used one. Because i think no one can hear me.
Nice little radio. I've had a bunch of them over the years. they were mandatory if you wanted to run your jeep with an off road club. i currently dont have one installed in my vehicles although there is one on my Harley that i never use. i have a Uniden Bear Cat Off Road on the shelf. Its got so quiet now on the roads very seldom does anyone come back to you. I may have to look at the Mini and maybe put one in my Ram Rebel. i have the room for sure. thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the info- It is a cool idea to have one on the Harley
Just picked one up at a flea market for $10 with antenna.
Great info here
You'll love it!
When you get radios for $10 give them to a friend get more on the radio
Looks a lot like my President Bill am/fm that you talked me into buying lol. I really like the new Bill. The Cobra is a nice looking radio but no WEATHER channels. Deal breaker for me when you live by Lake Erie. I have never had so many weather alerts as in this last summer. Saved our ass cpl times with the farm animals. They should of re-did the Cobra 18wx. One of my all time fav radios (also my 1st CB} Cheers
I am hoping that they bring that radio back as well.
I have the Bill II also, one main reason is it has NOAA. Wouldn't get a CB radio w/o it.
-- BR
I have an old Cobra DX19 (just the 19) which is VERY basic. All it has is: CB/PA switch, squelch and on/off volume knobs, up/down channel push buttons, microphone plug, power meter and a digital channel display...that's it. I used it in my big truck until I retired and it has been serving as a static display piece on a shelf since then. I did plug it in one time and it is still operational except that the internal speaker isn't working for some odd reason which I may get repaired, can't be too difficult.
I had one of those as well. Great little radio!
Cool little radio, very straightforward controls. Looks like the same case/body used on the Anytone at-779. I wouldn't jam it in between the seats though because it would insulate the heatsinks.
Oh, that is a good point. It might overheat. Thanks for the tip!
I've been hoping to see that little thing on your channel being reviewed. It would do well in my wife's vehicle. It's not a small vehicle, but the fact you can fit it just about anywhere she would want it is great.
It is small, my wife is not wanting a radio in her car, but this one she said was OK with due to the size and it could be hidden away
Just got mine today 3-21-24. Im impressed. Don't really care for the digital screen. I drive 2 hours a day for work,so i will find out if it holds up overtime.
You will have to let me know what you think of it
@FarpointFarms Working out just fine. TX was better than I thought it would be. Sound quality is ok,for being small. I'm not a fan of the display screen. Buttons are a little hard to change with fat fingers, but if you have it set to your desired setting before driving, you're good to go. TX for me was about 7-8 miles with 2 hills in-between. I bought the complete set with the Cobra antenna from Amazon. I rate it at 9 out of 10. It's pretty impressive to me. It's worth the money, and I actually already bought another for my father. I'd say it's worth buying.
I just picked one up at Walmart in the automotive department . $79.20 . They also have a magnetic mount antenna . Sold separately . But it appears this is a nice little radio . I haven’t put it through its paces yet , but plan to after the sun goes down . And then try it during the day . I’m pretty close to two towns and one city . And I’ll let you know how it works out .
Today is 240916 which is a Monday . Jiminy cricket out .
Please do let me know what you think of it, It is cool to see that you can still pick one up at Walmart.
The AM only model only has tinned wire ends, no harness and cig plug or tinned wire bundle. They are usually on the wall at the truckstop. Still cool !
Good to know!
Hopefully their quality will return to something close to what it was 25 years ago. At this point any movement in that direction would be a massive improvement.
I've been pleased with it so far!
Just because it's tiny does not mean it's not good. With today's technology we can make things smaller with great features. My first new 25 inch RCA TV had to weigh 150 pounds , the 65 inch on my wall weighs a whole lot less than 50 pounds!
Good point-
That's what she said....
Tuff radio ch 19 is clear 😢
The country bumpkin intro music is overwhelming 😂
My own song. Thanks!
I guess I'll get a few of these and several Texas Star 667s, then change the reference Crystal to move it down below ch1 so we'll all have comms when the fan gets brown & stinky and the cell system goes down.
Better to have and not need then need and not have.
I think the Roger Beep would be helpful for signaling end of transmission for distant SSB comms when it can be near impossible to know when the mic is unkeyed. But that was not the intent. It's called a Quindar tone, used by NASA to signal the transmitter on and off.
I agree with that for the distant ssb.
@@FarpointFarms I grew up in the days of Apollo, so it does sound cool.
I would like to see someone put this on a Wattmeter and see what the power output levels are for both Am and FM.
I will see what I can do.
Do realize FM has no peck envelope power swing. FM will give you 4 watt output with frequency shift. Scream into to mike all you want. That will not affect power output any.
@@FarpointFarmsare there any internal adjustments?
I'm sure they go back 40 years.. 😮 Do Ham international still make stuff? I had a multitude 2 back in the day that I loved.
Not sure, but I've been messing around since 1986.
Off topic but these guys in my state love their AM channel 28.
Here it's 26.
...need more info on performance...like, do I stand a prayer when I'm stranded in the middle of nowhere
...also, anything small with a few more utilities and listening options when I'm not in trouble? Like an audio weather loop and ham band?
Nothing on the market will do ham and CB, but there are other options out there.
I was hoping you would show a picture of the camo one but I didn't see anything..... LMAO
I had downloaded one, but the program I use to edit videos didn't like it.
I have the AM counterpart. Never thought I would miss a noise blanker, but this radio leaves me no choice. Great radio, but would trade ASQ for NB anyday.
Engine noise? Mine is fairly quite, but I have it in a pretty modern car.
Would like to know if there is software for the radio and connect via microphone perhaps go into 10 meters? 1)they don't have that stupid USB charger port 2)no pushing up and down on the screen to make changes 3)Software to program the scan? 4)What about squelch tails? I think they are neat
These are 11meter only. No software hookups as well.
I’m currently running a 19 ultra III in my daily driver but am wanting to go to something with SSB
The President McKinley is nice.
I got to be honest, I’m stuck between the cobra 19 mini and the president bill 2, really like the looks of this radio.
The President Bill has more features though, like weather bands and three different noise reduction settings, and it can also have its power output boosted a bit just by tweaking the factory service menu settings. There are videos in YT showing how.
@@duanebledsoe7566 thanks for the info, I’ll check it out.
Both are great radios. The 19 is a little easier to use.
Not a fan of roger beep on the cb, but I use it on my Midland Xtalkers & GXT 1000 FRS radios.
Roger beep makes CB's more Awesomer.
Love this radio 😅plug 🔌 play no cq repeters my new compact base my receiver is the fcc andy 😅
Good choice! I have this one in one of my cars. It has come in handy a few times
Hey thanks for the tutorial Erik. I just bought one of these direct from Cobra for $29.00. I'm new to all this but I did get everything hooked up in my vehicle safely and it works well, but there is one issue. I hear motor noise from my own engine. What do I need buy to get rid of that?
Look at ferrite ring and to wrap your power cord around it. It will help with the noise level
@@FarpointFarms thank you!
Try running straight to battery
Coming out of Minnesota.
With Skip, these things are talking all over the world.
I still have my Cobra 19x From the early 80's The original.
Awesome that you still have it.
@@FarpointFarms I'm old school. All of my radios are old. My newest radio is Uniden PC 33 40 ch.
Definatly a Qixiang built radio for Cobra. That mic is without a doubt a anytone mic
OK.
I just bought one and I want to know if I can add a USB connection instead of hard wiring to wires, so that way I can move it to other vehicles more easily
I don't think so. The outlet is 12V and USB is 5V
Question, if the car in front of me only has AM, can we communicate if I'm in FM??? Or do i have to switch to AM?
You'd have to switch to AM.
You mentioned car. Is this ok for box trucks or people over the road does the same as the bigger ones right? Of course I need an antenna for longer range right?
Yes, it will work fine for any type of vehicle. Yes, you'll need an antenna. The longer the better. Good luck!
How long is the wire that is used to hardwire the radio (not the cigarette plug wire)?
I can't remember, maybe a few feet
Does the cobra 19 mini have a hidden service menu and how do you access it
Not that I know of.
I can not get mine to scan! Can you explain that better to me? I looked in the manual etc
Yes, Turn up the squelch and hit the up button until all 40 channels have been passed. Then it goes into sdcan.
Just curious what's the song at the beginning of the video I actually liked it 😂
That is my theme song for my channel
Oh alright thanks
Is there anyway that it could go on Spotify so I can listen to it while I drive?
Would like to see a comparison between the 19 mini and president bill???
If I have time, I might have to do that
Nice very stealthy unit indeed
Indeed it is
I think I like that version ✌
What if the person on the other end only has an am only cb radio. Would they still be able to hear me on fm or would they need a AM/fm radio in order to hear me on FM.
You could still talk to him via AM, but on FM? no, they would need a FM radio as well.
i recently got one, and when i go to talk on the cb the “tx” doesn’t come on, the screen goes blank and it just beeps at me
That doesn't sound good. Is the unit still under warranty?
Any setting suggestions for the mini?
Mine is working pretty well with the stock setup.
How hilarious would the picture be with that thing married to a gigantic linear. I like the idea of a push or separate button power button so you I could keep the volume at one setting instead of having to adjust it every time I turn on my McKinley.
Shhhh! I may have this one currently zip tied to a RM203!
LOL! But I'm sure the 203 is set for four watts output.@@FarpointFarms
@@FarpointFarms That's exactly what I'm doing with my President Bill FM!
If only it had the wx channels, it would be the perfect radio! Is it 4w?
Yes, 4 watts.
Nice radio. Could you recommend a good antenna to go with it?
I love the Tram 3500
Hey it's a start or, at least something in the time of need...Prob will lead into more of what CB has to offer. Which by the way, CB is free all you need is a radio....
Agreed. CB is the open for all format that we miss.
Am thinking once I get the radio I want with the SSB on it, I might be able to reach you..will try and see then @@FarpointFarms
Wonder how well it would pair with an 8.5 foot antenna
It would work just fine with it= just make sure that it is one for CB radios
@FarpointFarms just hooked it up, i can hear people just fine just people cany hear me, any suggestions?
It could be Skip- you can hear them but they can't hear you and vise versa. I have a video on it
@FarpointFarms just tested mine with another buddy works just fine. Its somwthing on friend 1s cb
Does it have the weather channel?
I don't believe that it does
I just wonder if it can be tuned at all
I am not sure since I don't mess with that
Does the antenna come with it
No.
I just bought one very nice radio
Good choice!
Is the same thing as sideband?
No. Sideband is on the AM side of things. The FM mode is a new mode.
You mini, has the Am Fm button where mine is a 9/19 button, does that mean mine is only Am? I purchased the Cobra 19 Ultra V
Yes. The swapped the 9/19 with FM.
Similar looking to the RADIODDITY CB-27 PRO CB RADIO, AM/FM. Which one do you prefer since you have also reviewed the Radioddity unit?
It make look similar, but it's a totally different radio. this one is superior in every way. Wireless handset, better controls, and better display. It's clear Cobra put a lot of R&D into this one.
@@FarpointFarms …. Thanks, good to know!
is there much talk on Fm?
Depends on the area- FM is more clear
I'm in Tuscaloosa,Al.@@FarpointFarms
How do I make the auto scan feature come on?
Press and hold the Channel UP or DOWN button and the POWER button at the same time to activate the SCAN function
I bought it 3 days ago and I’m taking back this little thing cause is impossible to understand something even in my work yard
I am sorry to hear that
Any updates
Still working well!
Roger beep is awesome!
Yup!!
Getting awfully close in price to the President Bill 2, which has a lot of cool features missing on the Mini. The AM version of the Mini is tempting at $36 (on eBay) but at $100 I’d go for the President Bill.
I think that is part due to inflation.
But, Eric if you switch to FM then the person you're talking to would have to have FM on their radio too, for that to work.
Correct!
What’s the name of song you play at the beginning?
That's the "Official Farpoint Farms Theme Song"!
Just bought mine today from Walmart for 15$👌
That is one heck of a deal-
How to turn to fm mode
I'll make a follow-up video.

Ff.
Thanks for watching
I remember buying one of these for $19
I wish this was still only $19, prices are getting insane
With the big skip knuckleheads on just about EVERY channel, I don't really turn mine on anymore. Would be nice to see a bench test but we know it's not over 4 watts.
It's a little under 4 watts AM.
Wow that's small. I think I need one, just because .. lol
That is usually enough of a reason for me!
Does anyone make a mini with ssb .
I am not sure on that one.
Old Cobra 146 GTL probably was smallest SSB made.
Hey Eric 73s
Hey right back at you
Isn't it true that modern cars today can't accommodate CB radio. Wouldn't installing a cb radio on a 2023 car interfere with all the modern electronic in cars today.
No
@@813sierravictor If you put a linear in there it probably would.
Not at all. My 2021 Mitsubishi has one in it and has no issues at all.
My 2023 Nissan Frontier has a President Johnny III CB radio in it and there’s no interference with the vehicle’s systems at all. It’s the opposite actually, sometimes the vehicle interferes with the CB. I hear my LED brake lights and turn signals buzzing through the radio, but not always. I’ve noticed that it is weather dependent. Heavy fog or very hot and humid weather makes it worse.
It is slightly more complicated , but we can get used to it .
My thoughts as well.
Anytone 🤣😂👍
And?
happy radio. dang near fits in place of an ashtray in a 90s car
Ha--- I think you might be right
I hate the roger beep. For most of my 33 years on the road I hated when someone came in to run with our "pack" and we had to hear that stupid beep. 🦇
It was good enough for the Apollo missions, it's good enough for me!
@@FarpointFarms Yeah, I get it. However, for me, it got old quick when many drivers were running them and each time they unkey we got the beep. I adopted🦇 and still use even on my voice mail "over". CBs are a lot of fun and I still keep mine in my 2007 Ram and I retired in 06! Ant. Mt keeps it out of Explorer but on a road trip I ain't going with out the 2 way.
👍
Cool!
I don't have none of those things
