    Who is your favorite member of the Who? Mine would be... damn. Pete? Keith? That's a tough nut to crack. What do you think?

      I always listen most to Moon, and watch him most during live footage. And Keith is my favorite Rock musician ever.
      But Pete is my 2nd favorite song writer (after Bob Dylan), and he is the essential member of The Who. Also a great musician, and one of the most astounding stage performers ever.
      John and Roger are always in the back for me. It's not fair, because they are both arguably the GREATEST in their Rock positions.

      I have been a Keith fan since I can remember. His life was complex and he made some awful decisions, especially when he was young and sadly was very abusive to his wife, who he actually loved very much...he just couldn't control his undiagnosed mental afliction, drug and alcohol dependency, fame and be in a healthy relationship so young...many judge him harshly for that and the accounts are horrible...but, it wasn't who he really was...he was out of control which is why he is the original posterchild for the bad boy rock and roll lifestyle. His personal assistant, err babysitter...party buddy wrote a book about his life. It is filled with wild adventures, drugs and alcohol, chaous, all sorts of wild and weird mischief...and the bad stuff as well. His relationship with his wife and the loss of his friend in a tramatic accident that Keith blamed himself for, even though he obviously did not intend to kill his buddy. If you have a PO box, I would send you a copy, it is not super long and the majority of it is Keith Moon hysterically funny and I would love to send gifts for you and your family for Christmas 😊

      Difficult question. If you take one out nothing works. I can say Pete as a guitar player is much better than I initially thought in the early 70s . The rest has always been top of their class to

    Pete considered "I Can See For Miles" to be the Who's best attempt at creating a "Hit Single", but it only had limited success outside of the UK. This was big motivation for Pete to focus on writing "Albums" with mature "Concepts" after that. A lot of great music is packed into "Miles". Pete's amazing "one-note" guitar solo was hugely influential on other 1960's musicians. Pete's droning guitar is extremely menacing, sounding like a huge angry hornet. The only thing that makes Pete's guitar solo even better, is the way Moon's furious drum-fill explodes at the end of the solo. Really great song!

    A comment about "Tattoo" and "Our Love Was". While these are not famous Who songs, they are great examples of what made young-Pete Townshend such an interesting song writer. At first glance, "Tattoo" seems like a trivial joke-song, but there is a deeper seriousness within the song. It actually explores the puzzle of masculinity, and human mortality, in a way that becomes rather profound and emotional. And "Our Love Was" at first sounds like a sappy love song, but it's actually about a romance that has ended. In one version, Pete does a searing guitar solo of emotional loss. Just two of Pete's quirky little gems.

    • @timcardona9962
      @timcardona9962 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well said…I would add that musically those two songs are more interesting than most of what was produced at the time. Unusual chord voicings, unorthodox changes, etc

    • @jraben1065
      @jraben1065 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@timcardona9962 Hi Tim, Great point! The Who Singles created a lot of musical innovations. Besides the unusual chords and musical changes, the lyrical subjects were often highly unconventional, touching on some important (sometimes risque subjects). Another innovation was the Band's massively unusual talent. Roger's rough bluesy vocal style on the first album. Pete's early guitar innovation, distortion, feedback. John's monstrous lead-bass was unprecedented. And of course, Kieth Moon totally revolutionized early 1960's power drumming.

      @@jraben1065 you said it man….each of them are so enigmatic as players it enriches everything they play no matter how conventional. I always listen more than once to any given song cuz there’s always a drum or bass fill I missed ha!

    While I'm here,
    check out Ian Dury And The Blockheads.
    A brilliant British band formed in the late seventies. They had some great hits, such as Reasons To Be Cheerful Pt 3, Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick, Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll, I Wanna Be Straight.

    Reading an interview with Townshend about just how ferocious "I Can See for Miles" was intended to be sent Paul McCartney scrambling to create something louder, dirtier, and more sizzling - even though Paul hadn't yet heard the song Pete was talking about.The result: Paul wrote, recorded and screeched through "Heater Skelter," a song credited by many as the father of heavy metal. I think "I Can See for Miles" is one of the great landmark tracks of the psychedelic era. And, as you already know, I really, really, Okay REALLY think you'd fall in instant and forever love with the Nazz' single "Open My Eyes." It would make a perfect bookend with this little ditty. Fun Fact: It broke Pete's heart that it didn't chart better, and it sent the band into a financial tailspin that they had to try to dig themselves out from under. The result: an ambitious project, the rock opera known as "Tommy."

    I Can See For Miles is my first Who song. My best friend's dad was a editor of a hippie street magazine in Atlanta and was clued in to the new releases cos it was his job. He had a wall of records! I spent hours at their listening parties until my bedtime. I was latchkey and I hung out with tuned in hippies with large pockets. I didn't know I was hanging out in paradise. But they were my musical education. With their musical influence, I would stray into Bubblegum. Oh, the shame! Child castaway from paradise!

    Interesting sound mix on this album. My CD must be an early US mix version, but I'm guessing this is the UK version. Anyways, "Tattoo" is all about the lyrics. It's goes along with songs like "I'm A Boy" and "Pictures of Lily", ditties about the everyday life of English boys. "Our Love Was..." is an early attempt at a more 'mature' composition, even if it heavily relies on line cliches. I love John's jingle for Rotosound bass strings, and of course "I Can See For Miles" is the song that -- while not as big a hit as it should have been -- opened doors in a big way, especially in the states (check out their appearance on the Smother's Brothers TV show!)

    I Can See for Miles was Pete’s first attempt at a hard rock song. It inspired Paul McCartney to take a swing at hard rock himself, Helter Skelter.
    The radio bits were inspired by the pirate radio station, housed on a large ship off the British coast. The BBC strictly controlled the playlists. That provoked the rabble to create their own station off the coast.

    Keith Moon and John Entwistle were the best in rock at their instruments, and Daltrey was a great frontman. Townshend was a creative force and a great guitarist … the Who was a force

      @@matthewashman1406 in Rock who was better? Shrieve, Bonham or Pert? Maybe. It's all so subjective and depends on the music the band is playing. I don't know but Elvin Jones , Coltrane's great drummer, liked Keith Moon.

      @@arroyo284 yeh it is totally subjective. Funny thing, Townsend got sick of Keith drumming. He just wanted someone to play the beat. I think for technical skills I got know idea. 6 of half dozen of the other. But I believe whoever played for the sweet was extremely talented. His skill level is next level. Townsend thought the same. But as Keith goes he's probably the ultimate showman and best drummer for the Who.

    What a unique record. I think it's such a contrast to most of The Who's music. I think I Can See For Miles is the most "Who" sounding song on the record but IMO, I'm ok with that. In my teens, learning how to play guitar that was an E chord to start the song so I would use that to get my low E string in tune so I could tune the rest of the strings. This is a great album. Different isn't bad. I saw a reviewer mention that Pete invented the term Power Pop to describe the music on the album. Never knew that before...

    By some accounts, when Paul McCartney heard "I Can See for Miles" (which some consider the first "heavy metal" song), he was inspired to write "Helter Skelter" to top it.

    When it comes to the recording quality though, you really have to consider the era that that is recorded in and the situation they were in as an increasingly popular band but not a globally famous band not quite yet? It's just that Recording Technology was evolving so rapidly from right around this time to Forever up until now. And it has been exponential. So we tend to forget what it was actually like, but if you go listen to Live recordings from the 40s and the 30s and even the 20s like I have, you will see a clear progression their. And it really helps to have that context I think. But the only way to do that is to actually spend some time listening to the older music along the way as this stuff evolved.
    It's a tough sell but I've watched so many of your actions now for so long that I know you would get into it.❤

Yes, but we've worked through so much of Yes's stuff now" - PLEASE tell me you inadvertently left The Beatles - as a group and as individuals - off that list. Please? I know - you do a lot of reactions every week. I mean, A LOT!! And I truly appreciate hearing the music of my youth through the ears of someone less than half my age. I truly do. A terrific song by one of my favorite groups.
    You mentioned, L33, that you're running out of Yes songs to react to, but there are still a number of great tracks by them, such as "Bring Me To The Power." Which is a terrific song from the classic lineup, but when they reunited in the late '90s. Please, react to that great song. Also, Chris Squire formed a band with Billy Sherwood, called Conspiracy, and they made some terrific, jammin' music together.
    Keep up the good work, dude.

    Late 60:s Who sometime has weak productuon when manager Kit Lambert was co producing. One of the loudest bands of all time but you wouldn't know it by some of their studio. Keith amd John were criminally underrecorded, for that matter Pete too. But they're so great that they transcend it

    The first two didn't even sound like The Who. But I Can See For Miles is classic iconic Who. I've been digging that song since the early 70s, when I bought a 45 of it from a vending machine- no shit, the Ben Franklin store actually had a vending machine you could buy 45s from. It was awesome. Bought a lot of Who and Doors 45s.

    I wish they had done more songs like "I Can See For Miles", "Magic Bus" & "My Generation". That's the version of The Who I connect with. Rodger Daltrey vocals were SO good in the early days and Moon was an absolute animal.
    Pete Townsend grew a bit musically pretentious for my taste. Personally he's a bag of shit, but he could write a tasty rock track back in the day.
