The Lincoln car brand catapulted Kenney into today's jazz vocabulary. A masterful piece of marketing and a surprise gift to jazz fans. In my book Kenney ranks up there with Ella, Billie and Sarah. Just eternally enchanting.
Thank you for all the work you’re doing to get this brilliant talent in the consciousness of new generations. Next we need to get her albums Wikipedia pages.
As I told you, the commercial got my attention and I wanted to know who "the voice" was. My first thought was Sue Raney, who had a similar style, maybe at a different register. Anyway, thanks for sharing the information, and congratulations on the new article in the New York Post about you and the light you shed on this before now barely known great talent. Judy Dixon Gabaldon
Thanks for sharing Tony!! I hope that your work and this broadcast will help a new generation get to know the genius of Beverly Kenney. Hearing her sing today is such a joy and reminds me of my immediate love for her voice and style when I first heard her recordings in 1957. So sad that her mental health cut short her life. It has taken all these years for us to start to turn our attention to mental health. Let's hope some progress can be made.
Hi Richard. I first heard of Beverly Kenney on the internet a few years ago singing "That's All" and was bowled over. I've since gotten every recording of hers I could lay my hands on. Such a remarkable singer and I would say the stand out of her generation. I am a life long jazz fan but never heard any of her recordings on the jazz station in LA nor any mention of her. To what extent was she known in her life time? Did they play her recordings on the radio? Outside of her appearance on the Steve Allen show and with Hugh Hefner, what kind of public exposure did she have. I'm really curious to know.
@@xfhghe we had a late night dj in detroit, jim rockwell who played her quite often.there is an auto ad from lincolln avatior i have i have herd twice this morning that she sings it`s a most unusual day
@@wallymc8938 And, that's a 'most unusual way', to be made aware of Beverly Kenney, for the first time. But, that's the case, for me. I generally tune ads out, as I find them annoying and tedious. Well, I'm eternally grateful that I paid attention to the Lincoln ad. Her voice is gorgeous. This broadcast is a true gem! And, 'no ads'. Who says, we can't have it both ways. 👍
I "discovered" Beverly Kenney about five years ago. Her voice registers a sort of lively melancholy which touches the listener. Many of her renditions end without a resolution--songs like "That's All"--which leaves the audience suspended in her sadness...
I've found my way here from a Facebook post so thanks Tony. Beverly has a great voice and is incredibly capable with it. Her tone reminds me of Suzanne Vega but less edgy. Would be interesting to hear Suzanne sing a couple of these songs regardless but Beverly has her place in music history and I am in awe
In hindsight, it's clear that the once in history talent of lady Beverly Kenney was sadly lost due to a time when too many mental illnesses were as yet overlooked, misunderstood, stigmatized, and/or all of the above, in order to make a meaningful difference. Just imagine how much more musical magic could have come from this amazing woman were she afforded the thoughtful understanding and guidance that clearly became lost upon her. RIP sweet songbird!
I thought that I knew about most female jazz artists! The first I ever heard of Beverly Kenny was in that auto commercial that featured her recording of It's a lovely Day. It, she, is just wonderful!
The best I never heard
Thanks Tony. I adore Beverly.
Amazing.... and from my home state NJ. Thanks.
I love this, so much! I'll play it day, and night, non-stop!😍
I am a big Beverly Kenney fan - thank you SO much for continuing to promote this talented singer.

Fucking amazing! I discovered Beverly Kenney today and have been listening to her for the rest of the day.

I'm here due to the 2021 Lincoln car ad. What a talent.
Yes she was!!
