Think about it though. Total synthesis nowadays is more about method validation rather than the sake of making a target molecule. AI/ML can do it’s best to determine the best synthetic route but it’s a battle between paper chemistry & lab chemistry. Total synthesis isn’t going to be replaced, rather enhanced by advancements in technology.
AI is limited by the data available to train the models. They will be able to reach targets using known chemistry but I think we will still need humans to come up with novel reactions that don't yet exist in the literature. I think AI will push chemists to be more creative to stand out from AI generated methods
