I live in Spotsylvania VA where 2 of these murders took place. I was a senior in HS. I remember being told to not stand still, walk in zigzags. It was crazy.
I lived in Sterling, VA at the time which was close by, although none of the murders actually happened there. I was in 5th grade and definitely remember it being on the news, and my mom being so worried about me ever going outside. I remember her driving me to my school bus stop and having me wait in the car until the bus arrived. I was also super upset because Halloween was coming up and I was sure I wasn't going to be able to go trick-or-treating if the guys weren't caught by then. But then they did get caught and arrested not too long before Halloween.
The first recognized shooting of the spree was 10/3/2002 (earlier victims in other states and other victims in the area were identified later). This would have been the evening broadcast on 10/4/2002, certainly before the shooting of the kid heading into a school.
Watching this in 2021.... It's only a matter of time before this happens again. Not to mention at some point on a full scale!!!! Like the last line said "Police don't know what they're dealing with"

I saw this on TV while I was in middle school. At home I couldn't believe what was happening. The early 2000s were a scary time. We had just had a terrorist attack the year before, anthrax letters or suspected anthrax letters, and suddenly a sniper on the loose and a lot of speculation that white trucks or vans were involved. And they overlooked the possibility that a blue 1990 Chevy Caprice was at each shooting. And little did we know it was planned and executed by a guy who was ex-military and a young kid was the trigger man. But the real motive was to make it look like his ex-wife was a victim of a random shooting. Cold and calculated killings and they didn't care who the victims were.
I was a twinkle in my parents' eyes when this happened, it's so weird seeing how close i live to places where actual murder sprees happened.
