  • The Ninu village massacre occurred in 1875 in the Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh. The Wancho tribe that lived there became victims of the brutality of foreign rule. The massacre stands out as a dark example of the barbarities perpetrated by the colonial government on different sections of the Indian society.
In February 1875, a survey party under the leadership of Lt. Holcombe, the Assistant Commissioner of Sibasagar district, reached the Ninu village. The Wancho inhabitants of the village were mourning the death of their chief at that time. Though the residents were suspicious of the intruders, they tried to be as welcoming as possible. But the foreigners treated them with contempt, and one of the soldiers even hit the corpse of the Chief with his baton. Enraged by this offense, the Wanchos attacked the Company team and killed eighty members, including Holcombe. A military expedition was immediately dispatched to Tirap under Brigadier Nuthall to seek revenge. The army burnt down the villages of Ninu, Nisa, and Longkai. But it did not end there. When the Wanchos rebuilt Ninu, another battalion was sent in the same year. They demolished the village and massacred the Wanchos who valiantly resisted.
This horrific incident left an abiding scar on the memories of the Wanchos, who ceased all contact with the lower plains till 1947. Yet, their pride, bravery, and indomitable courage testify to the spirit of resistance against the oppressive colonial rule.
