    Bought the new Seiko Marinemaster 300 (SLA021 aka SBDX023) and it gets more wrist time than my Omegas, IWC, and Sinn. It fits my 6.75" wrist great. I think it has a lot to do with the case shape and how small (aka normal size) the dial actually is. It wears smaller than my Omega Seamaster (with gloss dial) that is 41mm.

      Shipmate That new model with the sapphire and ceramic is nice. I’m jealous. Around 7” +/- and the size of the MM still works. It’s a big watch but Seiko designers mask the size well.

      @@SPQR-Z I also own a SBDC051, which specs show it as a smaller watch, but the MM300 wears smaller than the SBDC051. I think it has to do with the lug-2-lug length and the size of the dial. Dial on the MM300 is small, giving it a smaller appearance. Also, I've gotten surprisingly used to the MM300's height and the thickness of the clasp (which I thought would annoy me). I think my next purchase will be either a Panerai 111 or 112 or a Grand Seiko GMT (SBGE201) with Spring Drive.

    TBH, im more happy wearing the mm300 rather than my rolex gmt master 2. The wording seiko makes you think its cheap and your mind will tells you to enjoy the watch in whatever condition or situation it maybe. Unlike with the rolex, you will always be careful with it, you always thinks about resale value and you always need to make sure it is always in pristine condition and tendency you will not wear it.

    • @SPQR-Z
      @SPQR-Z 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Jose Joaquin Miguel Absolutely agree. I bought the Seiko MM300 to be an everyday wear watch. I hesitate to call it my “beater” watch, but I do do activities with this watch that I would hesitate to do with a more expensive watch like a Rolex. That said I don’t baby any of my watches.
      I agree that Seiko has an image problem among the high end watch crowd. We tend to be somewhat of a snobbish bunch at times. Anything without a “Swiss Made” on the dial can get the cold shoulder and in Seiko’s case that is very undeserved. Seiko has been at this for a very longtime. In fact they where making watches years before there was even a Rolex brand. They have a extensive history filled with quality & innovation. Seiko offers value driven watches at all price points and that is where the confusion starts. Many watch guys see their lower end watches for sale in department stores, but have no real firsthand knowledge of their higher end watches. Seiko may not even sell their high end watches in your particular country which I think is a mistake in marketing. Start making more of those JDM only models available worldwide somehow. Take their high end watch series “prime time” so to speak. At any rate. I’m glad I rediscovered the brand again. They where my GOTO watch back in my poor college & early workdays. They where always great watches offering allot of value for not allot of money, just like today. But for many Rolex snobs like me, I had to be educated by people “in the know” about Seiko’s high end offerings. So now I know and am a better watchnut for it. Love my MarineMaster 300 and have been wearing it nonstop for several weeks now!

      evan h so what is the point??? Even more reviewers are doing the same thing, comparing the uncomparable. Japanesse craftsmanship (im not talking about watches, cars included) is FAR better than the western MERCHANDISING. FAIR price, relaiability, design, variety, service everywhere, parts. Stop DOING this!!! At the end, the market speaks LOUD, a rolex worth 1/2 or 1/3 of its value, and my Seiko Monster increasing value. By the way, the next time choose a Marinemaster or a Citizen Aqualand. Rolex could cost 30 times more and in reciprocity Seiko worth 30 MORE.

    Just found your review whilst researching my next purchase. Great review thanks. An awesome piece which wears really well. Think this video help make up my mind, I’ve a similar wrist size. Thanks again. Out of curiosity, do you still have the marine master or has it passed on to someone else?

    • @SPQR-Z
      @SPQR-Z 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello. Glad you found the review helpful. If similar size wrist you will be just fine. The MM300 is a compact watch that hides it’s size well. The main dimension that you will notice and that can’t really be hid is the height. It does sit proud of the wrist and depending on the shape of your wrist (rounder vs more oval )will be quite apparent. It’s not extreme or even worst than allot of other divers out there but should be considered. Other than the height no problem on a 7’ish size wrist. Yes I do still have the MM300 although I sold off the spare one I had last year after it was canceled and replaced with the Prospex branded version. If the dropping of the Marine Master off the dial doesn’t bother you the new SLA021J1 is actually a better all around improved watch. I checked one out and like the ceramic bezel and Sapphire crystal over the Hardlex on the MM300.
      I recently did a video of the 2014 Rolex SeaDweller 40mm Ceramic which is the same thickness at 15mm. You can see the MM300 sitting in the background in that video. The MM300 actually matches up better size wise with that SD Rolex. Unfortunately I cutout the part where I compared the two but maybe I will release a video with that cutout footage where I was directly comparing them. Good luck with your decision. I think you will not be disappointed with whatever version MM300 you get. It is really the very best of the Seiko Divers.

    It’s not intended to be worn to the country club or a grocery store it’s meant to be worn by those mastering the deep blue. The Seiko MM300 compared to this Rolex (c’mon boys ) The Sub was torpedoed and sunk as soon as the dive commenced descent.

    • @SPQR-Z
      @SPQR-Z 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jas Hoo I have several Rolex Submariners so yes, for me a Tudor Sub would be redundant. I wanted something different with high build quality as opposed to just another Submariner. That said the latest Tudor Subs with the in-house movements are excellent and a great value in comparison to Rolex. The Pelagos is actually a better comparison to the MM300 because it is closer in price than the Rolex. Iv’e handled the new Pelagos and owned a older Blackbay. Both Very nice watches. If I was shopping for a premium Diver the Tudors would definitely be at the top of my list to consider. If one did not already have a Rolex Sub the new Tudor Subs are the next best thing. You could actually get a Pelagos + a MM300 for less than a new Rolex Ceramic Sub. Something to consider.

      evan h I've actually pre-ordered an sbdx017 before watching your vid. it's quite assuring to know that someone with submariner will still add mm300 to his collection. I've owned both mm300 and black bay. As a watch flipper, they came and gone quickly. But now that seiko discon sbdx017, and the price of used one went up like crazy, it makes me want to get one before seiko starts to push mm300 into the "limited" GS priced SLA line.

    • @SPQR-Z
      @SPQR-Z 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jas Hoo Not just a Rolex Sub owner but a super fanboy of the brand. Rolex Stainless Sport watches are like currency to us flippers. Iv’e bought, sold and traded well over a 100, mostly Submariners and done very well with them over the years. As long as you can get into them for a good price and/or wait a few years, the prices will increase and you can make $’s. The demand is always there. You should think about adding a Rolex Sub to your personal watches someday. You will see that Rolex is #1 for a good reason.
      I am very happy with the Seiko MM300. It’s a totally different vibe than the Rolex and Tudor but has a charm and quality feel all it’s own. I paid $2000 USD from a watch buddy for mine. I was lucky because he could have gotten more for it if he wasn’t in such a hurry to sell. Now I often see them for $2500 + range NIB but if you really look around you can find them for slightly cheaper. I just picked up another one for $2200 just to flip.
      Since you are a Tudor fan have you seen the new Pepsi GMT that was announced at Basel this year? That will be a watch flippers dream along with the new Rolex stainless Pepsi GMT. I am on waiting list at my AD’s for both those. The Rolex will retail for around $9000 but will probably go for around $12-15k in the secondary market. The Tudor version will be around $4500 and word on the street says it will sell for a nice premium also.

    • @SPQR-Z
      @SPQR-Z 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sean G Hard to say which actually last longer. I will say that both of these newer lume formulas last longer than all previous versions and stay useful longer after a charge. Both will last all night. The Seiko’s lume being green is much brighter at any given time over the blue lume used in the Rolex. That’s because the human eye perceives the color green much better which is why they primarily use green in glow in the dark products. I like the blue that Rolex uses and it seems to last about the same amount of time, just not quite as bright.

    I think the MM300 is a better value. If you don't like the hardlex crystal it's simple just replace it with sapphire crystal when it comes time to service the watch. The new MM300 the SLA019 has sapphire crystal I'm sure you could use that on your MM300. Hopefully they make a black ceramic bezel instead of the green one and then you could add that also. That's what I'm planning on doing anyways if I still have my MM300 when it's time to service.

    • @SPQR-Z
      @SPQR-Z 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      CLO27 No doubt the better value over a Rolex Sub, and many other brands for that matter. I will probably get a Sapphire crystal for my MM300. I still feel that Seiko should have included it on their top diver at this price point but it’s such a great watch that I was able to overlook this over-site. So it sounds like the new green dial model does have sapphire which should fit fine. Not sure I like the new versions color scheme. The Ceramic bezel looks great and better at resisting scratches but many still prefer the aluminum inserts.
      Yes the Seiko MarineMaster SBDX017 is no more at least in name. Seiko has released a limited green (Hulk) version SLA019 that will probably evolve into the replacement for the MM300 at some point. The good news is it will have a Ceramic bezel and Sapphire. The bad news for some is the Seiko will rebrand the watch with the ProSpex X on the dial and loose the Marinemaster monicker. That is a huge deal for some hardcore Seiko guys.

This time a 4 line with engraved rehaut (my 2line is a 1990) The ceramic bezel and the new design clasp couldn't compensate for the new chunky styling.
      I guess I like the slim understated profile of a 14060/M. The only modern Rolex I currently own is the 39mm explorer. And I'm still not entirely convinced about that. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Appreciated 👍

      Alex H Kane I like the old tapered lugs case same as you. Right now I am looking for a Seadweller 116600 Rehaut 40mm with the old style tapered case but with Maxi-dial and Ceramic bezel insert. It has the Glidelock and as with all Seadwellers no Cyclops for a cleaner look. The best of the Ceramic Subs but still the old school case. Only 2 years for that model and sure to become a very sought after Rolex Sub.
      You have the best aluminum no-date Sub version with that 14060 Rehaut. I believe that the last year ones will be very collectible in the future. I recently picked up a couple last year 36mm Explorers MIB to save. Really good prices because most people want the 39mm. But to me the Explorers will always be the original 36mm versions. I heard many Rolex guys are adding the 36mm Explorer to their collections before the prices go back up. Robert Spinks Ω Speedy, Sub, MM300, you have good taste. Tough choice between the two. The good news is you can’t go wrong which ever way you choose. Both excellent and top choices in divers. The Seiko dial is definitely more a charcoal matt grey. The Rolex a deep gloss black.
      Personally I would always go Rolex Sub over the Seiko but then again I’m hardcore Rolex fanboy so quite bias. Pick the one that speaks to you most, can always change your mind and flip either one if needed. They both are hugely desirable.
      Another great watch that I think people overlook but actually compares more directly with the Seiko MM300 is the Tudor Pelagos Submariner. At 41mm it has more size for added wrist presence. Slightly more $’s than the Seiko but way less than the Rolex. Check the great comparison by TH-camr: Jatthew Mackson. He shows a left hand wind version of the Pelagos but it comes with regular crown position. Good luck with your choice!

Some small aspects are shaved off but as a complete watch for about 25% of the price, it offers so much value. If you are on the fence about the MM300, the Sumo might work for you.

      Venus Dee great watch the sumo i had the blue but I sold it because i was going to get mm300 then decided to hold off, only negatives on the sumo was the blue wasnt my type of blue and the bezel numbers bit big sort of regretted selling but don’t think i’d rebuy.

    • @planetdee3587
      @planetdee3587 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert Spinks, I actually enjoy the bezel numbers on the Sumo as it makes it different. I guess it is a taste thing. I own the blue one and I think it looks really nice, though I can see maybe somebody prefering the black dial for more everyday use. I feel Seiko is its own worse enemy sometimes in that it offers so many great watches at every price point. If you own the MM300, there is no need to go to the Sumo but for those who want the same or similar style and do not want to spend so much, the value to the Sumo is just amazing. At the price point of the MM300, I would probably baby it a bit more and use it for more safe occasions. Lately I have been semi abusing my Sumo as I have been using it at work where it is at risk of getting scratches but I dont mind.

    instead of making the watch wear smaller, i don't understand why they didn't just make the watch smaller!
    42 diameter, 48-49 lug to lug, and a more reasonable 13 (or, dare i say it, thinner, slimmer 12 or slimmer profile... like how even some microbrands manage to do it, or the ole Seamaster did before it porked up), and bam, here's a smash hit (though taking into consideration 2020 Seiko, it would probably cost as much as a Submariner, lol)

    • @SPQR-Z
      @SPQR-Z 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      praetor47 Agreed. Maybe tradition? Seiko Divers have never been small watches. But when they brought this watch back, 41-42mm and a slimmer profile would work better for a wider range of wearers. Watch manufacturers all jumped on the oversized watch craze. I think it’s run it’s course and hopefully watches return to more traditional sizes. 40-42mm for sport watches, 36-38 for dress watches

      @@SPQR-Z yeah... i particularly don't understand the thickness of this thing. over 15mm for a 300m stainless steel watch is frankly pathetic in the 2010s, let alone now in the '20ies. there's a whole host of 11-12mm 200m divers, some are even 300m, and there's really no excuse going over 13mm unless you're packing some very serious movements in there (and i mean 5day power reserves, spring drives and the likes) or 1000m or wr (and even then... Benarus had a 13mm watch with 1000m... and that thing was 38mm! Sinn has a 2000m watch that's barely over 13mm... in 41mm and titanium!)
      from the side it looks ugly, unbalanced... like a tumor. not "manly" at all (which is a pity, 'cause from the front it looks awesome. i'd probably even sell my Chopard to get one if it was more sensibly sized :D)

      It's a dive watch. It's made for saturation diving, not cocktail parties. Also, it's actually, dial-wise, smaller than most Seiko divers, which makes it look thicker than it actually is. I love how mine feels and looks, and, I have relatively slender wrists, but, then, I'm a tool watch lover and hate light, wispy watches. However, if you're looking for a high end desk diver to go under your suit cuff, a 41mm Omega is your best bet.

    What's sad to me is the baby sized band on a 5 to 6 thousand dollars watch then you look at the lume and Seiko blinds you. I just can't justify that much money for a Rolex. The Seiko is a Tool !!!! Rolex is just jewelry and something for someone to say I've got a Rolex look at me. Myself I'll never pay that kind of money for a watch just to say I have it and never use it for what it's intended for.

      CHRISTOPHER LILES 20mm bracelet on the Rolex is fine. The MM300 could probably use a 22mm. It’s a big heavy watch and many people have said it could use a wider bracelet to be more stable. I don’t mind the 20mm, it seems just fine IMO.
      I agree with you about the Seiko divers. being a more functional and practical dive watches. Rolex has made the decision to go more upscale to capture the luxury watch buyers whom are more interested in status and fashion. The Submariners are a great dive watch for those that would wear it diving. They have a long history of making tool watches that are functional and hard wearing. Iv’e used my Subs snorkeling, swimming numerous times and never had an issue with them staying water tight. I trust them to function under just about any activity I may do. I don’t baby any of my sport watches. But yes I agree with you that most Rolex that are purchased nowadays never will see anything more than a shower or bath water. The new Submariners are $7500-9000 new so people tend to baby them. Iv’e been wearing the Seiko nonstop for nearly 8 weeks so I can do a update. Just love this watch

I hate when a company just controls there stuff just so they can make up the price for everything. I know Seiko is having some issues as well. Sounds like it's becoming wide spread in the watch industry. But so far I haven't heard anything crazy with Grand Seiko. In My Opinion !!! The High End Seiko JDM and Grand Seiko Watches are just hard to beat for the Money !!!! I will never justify spending Rolex Money for a Watch. I'm gonna have a hard time going over 6 to 8 grand. But I'm like everyone else I have my few will have one day watches. 😏 It is Amazing to watch a Grand Seiko being built by hand and everything involved with making it durable and perfect to look at. I've been shown some secret things about Rolex and 6 or 7 other watches. Then I was shown Grand Seiko and everything about them it's truly unbelievable the process to make it what they are. I believe watches are Absolutely Amazing tools and works of art in a lot of cases !!

Even the fit and finish of the actual GS watch is slightly inferior to the Rolex. Only someone who own both Rolex and Seiko will admit the Rolex is the superior watch. I find the MM300 bracelet quite comfortable. Yeah, the clasp is stamped but who can see that when it's fastened? It doesn't effect its functionality in any way. My Submariner's bracelet doesn't feel any better, although the clasp action is a dream. Most comfortable bracelet ever made is by Omega. Anyway, for my dive watches, I prefer rubber; what strap comes on my watches has never been a consideration for me because I'm one of those people who always have to meddle.

      It depends. I’m more old school where 40-41mm is the traditional size for a sport watch. Today’s watch guys like bigger case sizes like 42-46mm. Seiko aggressively beveled the case, keeps short lug to lug and uses a small dial on the MM300. This makes it wear smaller so people like me that prefer a smaller wearing watch can find it acceptable. Of course if your are the type that likes oversized watches then your probably fine with the 44mm case size. My Rolex Sky-Dweller with a 42mm case wears as big as this Seiko. It wears slightly on the big side

I ended up getting a blue Sumo which I love. The MM looks good on your wrist even though it is a big watch but I like big watches as I have a 8" wrist. You have made me start looking again now. Perhaps Seiko will bring another updated one out now with a sapphire glass but you can guarantee that the price will be much higher which is where they want to go in order to lift the brand.

    • @SPQR-Z
      @SPQR-Z 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bryn Smart The Seiko has a totally different but unique vibe of its own. It does exude quality and the solid feel of a Rolex Sub. You probably get that with the Sumo also. I really like that watch also but it was a bit too big for me. It wears bigger than the MM300.
      The replacement for the MarineMaster is a bit of a mixed bag. It does have a Sapphire crystal but Seiko went with the Hulk green color. It looks nice but some people will definitely prefer the traditional black dial/bezel of the SBDX017. Also I believe they have the Prospect branding on the dial now? These factors have been driving up the price on the MM300. It’s frustrating but you’ll find one if you keep looking. I just picked up another one NIB for $2200USD for future flipping. Good luck with your hunt. There’s always ebay. Everyone knocks it but I have found and bought a few watches there myself after knocking it for years lol.

The MM300, I understand, used to be a favorite among oil rig divers and such, but, I think the Submariner would have kept up with it through most typical dive situations.

      varanid9 lol. It’s great to hear someone actually using a tool watch like the Rolly-Sub or Seiko MM300 for what it’s designed for. Never apologize for that. Too many buy these tool watches only to baby them, desk divers and posers. I never baby my watches. I don’t abuse them on purpose but I certainly don’t baby them. Scratches and dings gives a watch some character. It reminds you that this close personal item you wear on your wrist has been a companion with you on life’s journey. That it’s your watch and you have the battle marks to prove it. Military issued and tough tool watches have been a military tradition forever. Many Ex servicemen that are now caught up in this crazy hobby got their start by wearing those watches during service. Some are lucky enough to still have that watch they wore. Both these watches are winners. They are tough tool watches that can go the distance as well or better than anything on the market. I had a Submariner date that I wore hard for 17 years. I never even serviced it and It never missed a beat. I expect nothing less from this Seiko.

On the other hand Iv’e heard that other Marinemaster 300 owners have had +10 seconds so it’s the luck of the draw when buying an unregulated watch. Seiko does offers great value at many price points. I agree that those looking for accuracy should be wearing a $100 Quartz.
      As far as Rolex Sport watches. I agree they are hyped and expensive however they are also excellent, well made watches. They retain their value and even appreciate in value overtime. In USA their are a couple options for basic serving. Repairs are back to Japan. Parts seem to be available through various outlets. As far as league with Rolex. The Submariner is in a league all it’s own. The Seiko is the top of Seiko’s range as far as it’s mechanical divers, until the Grand Seiko’s. Even though it has a totally different vibe I would say that it in it’s own way it is Seiko’s answer to the Rolex Sub. Agree build quality isn’t quite at the Rolex level and lacking the things you mention. Still at $2500 it is a very nice diver for the money. Especially if compared to many Swiss divers on the market. Just another option for those wanting something totally different. Very different and unique vibe to these Seiko’s compared to Swiss watches.
