That book about the skunks hit home since I just had 3 of them removed from under my deck. Must've taken a lot of work (or fun) to put this video together. That's why you're the best.
I've read ten: James, Martyr, My Friends, Playground, The Safekeep, Tell Me Everything, Wandering Stars, Catalina, Friday Afternoon Club and Funny Story. I liked them all! I have many others on my tbr list nd could add many more...but my top fiction tbr is probably The Mightly Red and my top Nonfiction is The Light Eaters. I'm also very interested in the Varda book and the surprisingly offbeat Skunks :). Good job, btw...very quick and interesting!
Danez Smith is amazing, I found a few of their collections in my local library in Budapest, Hungary. This new one sounds great as well, I might order it as a Christmas gift for myself :D
Glad to see you so excited about Agnes Varda. I have this book, too, looking forward to reading it soon. The film by her husband, Jacques Demy, “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg”, is my favourite film.
I’ve read: All Fours Another Word for Love The Black Utopians Catalina The Eyes Are the Best Part Greta & Valdin Headshot Intermezzo James Knife Martyr! The Mighty Red The Most My Friends The Safekeep Soldiers and Kings Whiskey Tender I have so many from this list on my TBR. So many good choices.
Devil is Fine has also been longlisted for the Aspen Awards just this month, as well as Fire Exit, Anita De Monte Laughs Last, The Safekeep, Wandering Stars. Books I want to read from the list: Too many to list! 📚📚📚 Books I have read: Also 9 books out of 100 🫣 Wandering Stars, The Safekeep, My Friends, Martyr, All Fours, The Book Censor’s Library, Ghostroots, James, and Rejection. I will be reading all of the Aspen Award Longlist, so that will add two more from the list I haven’t read. I joined a reading challenge group to read all of the Longlist and there are some good ones on there. The Aspen literary award =“ annual award for an influential work of fiction that illuminates a vital contemporary issue and demonstrates the transformative power of literature on thought and culture.”
Books on the list I’ve read and recommend Greta & Valdin The God of the Woods Intermezzo James Martyr! ( half way through reading) My Friends The Safekeep Tell Me Everything Wandering Stars ( I’ve only started reading) Absolution ( is on my kindle TBR)
Interesting list! Even though I have read 100 books this year so far, only 4 matched (loved Fire Exit & Tell Me Everything, enjoyed Funny Story and DNF’d Wandering Stars even though I loved There There.) I have The Great Divide and James in my bookshelf. Would like to check out The Bookshop, The Barn, Three Skunks, The Mighty Red and Help Wanted. Almost bought Playground (gorgeous cover and premise but, didn’t get hooked when trying the first pages.)
Possibly you didn't do justice to The Eyes Are the Best Part, which is a favorite of another BookTuber I follow. Apparently, it's less horror than it is the difficulty of a single mom trying to date. The title refers, I believe, to a scene where they're having some kind of seafood for dinner and the mom admonishes the daughter to eat because the "eyes are the best part." Of course I don't know, but I respect her opinion and hope to get a chance to read it soon. Thx!
Phew. I have read ten, but have another two in my physical tbr. Other than that, so many books I have never heard of before. So many books, so little time. However I am trying to catch up on more Aussie books for this holiday period, which barely ever get a mention in these lists.
Unsurprisingly, I have only read 2 books on this list - Martyr! (loved it) and Whoever You Are, Honey (it was fine?). Lots of these are on my tbr, but Wandering Stars is the only one sitting unread on my shelves.
Every year has so many great books that any best-of or must-read list inevitably overlooks dozens of gems. Here are some of my favourited of 2024 that I didnt see here: Green Frog by Gina Chung The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard A Short History of Trans Misogyny by Jules Gill-Petersen
This is actually an eclectic and, in my opinion, kind of odd, off-kilter list. I have read close to a third of them but there are so many great books of 2024 missing and also so many niche, and very low profile books on this list. A surprise. But you did a very impressive job summarizing them all so quickly!
You did an amazing job with all of those summaries!
Thank you! 😊📚
Whew!!!😂 thanks for your and work and sharing is really appreciated
😊📚
Hello! I'm new to this TH-cam channel. Thanks for making this video and happy reading.
Hello! Thanks for watching! 😊📚
@EricKarlAnderson You are welcome.
Wow! I can’t believe you got through all of them. So glad to see Mina’s Matchbox on the list.
I've got a copy of Ogawa's novel and I'm hoping to get to it!

Loved how you did this video, amazing work. I just saw the NYT list and I like the Time’s and NPR’s lists much better.
Thank you! 📚

Yes, it’s an amazing film! ‘The Young Girls of Rochefort’ as well.

Martyr! ( half way through reading)
My Friends
The Safekeep
Tell Me Everything
Wandering Stars ( I’ve only started reading)

I’m so sad Ours by Phillip B. Williams didn’t make the list! It’s such a good book, but it’s not getting the hype it deserves 😔
Adding it to my TBR. Thank you
@ you’re welcome! if you get a chance to read it, i’d love to hear your thoughts 📚

I've only read 12, but have about the same number planned. Many of the others I will have to check into and decide.
I have only read one from this list: martyr and it was exceptional.
It is a very US-centric list, in more ways than one. It seems strangely dated and also self-conscious.
Every year has so many great books that any best-of or must-read list inevitably overlooks dozens of gems.
Here are some of my favourited of 2024 that I didnt see here:
Green Frog by Gina Chung
The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard
A Short History of Trans Misogyny by Jules Gill-Petersen
I've only read four: James, Intermezzo, Long Island and My Friends.
I have read 10. Mostly Booker and National Book Award nominees + Long Island.
I have only read The God of the Woods and Knife. Both very good. There are some interesting non fiction books there.
Where is There Are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafak? My favorite of the year hands down

Thank you! Yeah, quite a spread and I'm guessing there are few readers who'd really be interested in every book on their list.
I don't know what it is with me and lists, but as soon as I see one, I just have to work down it, ticking off items.
❤ oops, John G Dunne was Griffin Dunne's uncle not father❤
Lies and Weddings!!!! So much fun!
How about how many books I’ve ever heard of? I didn’t do a precise count, but I think it was 20 or less. A rather bizarre list.
Devil is Fine 👍
I read 0 books from this list and this probably will not change in the future :)
These all sound like agenda books--where's the literature, or is that just not inclusive enough?
