The song's not about sports, but he uses his love for soccer teams as a metaphor for his love for her: "You're Celtic, United, but, baby, I've decided you're the best team I've ever seen."
True, the songs namesake Brit Ekland was also featured in his Tonight's the night video, but only shown from behind. That one was filmed before a fireplace.
First Cut is the Deepest, sang by legends, icons. Originally by Cat Stevens, then covered by Rod Stewart and later by Sheryl Crow. I like Rod's and Sheryl's versions
@@captaincapitalism264 For sure. My maman who never took onto english just certain phrases at the end, at that point didn't speak it at all. She loved Blondie, Stewart and Mj. She really handled remote too at that point I was 6 so she put me on him.
I like both Celtic and United. Growing up and being born in the States this song was my 1st knowledge of football. Born in 72 it makes sense saying that, and I support both teams since. See more United here though
It was his gf that was the metaphore and she knew it...his current wife always knew she couldn't compete with Celtic FC so she just went with Rods flow and they been together for decades now.
One of my favorite days started out with me arriving at a customer's house before they were awake. Part of my task that day was to destroy a bunch of weeds along the east side of her house. I got down on my knees and picked those weeds like I was a teenager, singing this song the whole time.. I thought I was being kinda quiet, but when I was done with the weeds, the lady and her tenants started clapping at me.
"Maggie May" from 1971 by Rod was the start of me becoming a big life long fan of his. It's about his time with an older woman. I was twelve years old when that song came out! But "Forever Young" is the song I have always dedicated to my nieces and nephews of every age. Wonderful positive lyrics. That song came out in 1988.❤ All my other favorite Rod Stewart songs are from the 70's era. 😊
Jay / Amber.....you have not touched much on the Rod Stewart songbook yet.....keep going!! You will not be disappointed. 1970' and early 1980's. Many..many songs!
This has always been my favorite of all of his songs. It's so romantic and honest and beautiful. This, Maggie May, and Sailing are all three amazing songs.
I chased Rod Stewart down bourbon street New Orleans at Mardi Gras 2003 and sang this song to him. He and his bodyguard ran from me at top speed. I have it on video to prove it.
My aunt passed away in September. She loved this song and all of Rod’s music. This song is elegantly beautiful and will always bring a tear to my eyes.
I love this song so much. "You'll be my breathe should I grow old..." When Rod started recording the American Songbook series, he reached Crooner Status for me.
I love Rod Stewart. He can sing just about anything. His voice is suited for so many genres. A few favorites for me are, I Was Only Joking, I Don’t Wanna Talk About It, Someone To Watch Over Me, The Killing of Georgie and Broken Arrow.
Rod the Mod! This is a late 70's tune. 70's Rod happens to be my favorite, but it's all magnificent. Rod wanted to be a professional soccer player as a teenager. He is still a huge soccer fan. He supports the Celtic (a Scottish team) and Manchester United (an English team). Both are mentioned in the song. I saw him in 1996, and all during his concert he kicked soccer balls out into the crowd. I've seen recent interviews where he's wearing a gold necklace with "Celtic." Did you guys know he just a released an album of swing tunes? I've listened a couple of times, and, yes, he's darn good at it. It's called "Swing Fever." It's like 1940's big band swing. "Tonight's the Night" was released on the album after this one (Foot Loose and Fancy Free). It is also one great tune. Gotta get Amber to like that one a little bit more.
This was our wedding song back in 1996. I picked it primarily for the opening lines of the second verse. "My love for you is immeasurable my respect for you immense".
Rod surprised everyone by recording an entire album of standards in 2022, it was a huge hit, so he recoprded four more albums. So the rocker became a crooner.
I saw Rod in concert in the eighties across the river in Detroit. When this song came up in his slower set every could was embracing, singing and swaying. I have been to so many concerts and his was without a doubt one of the most entertaining of all time. I is a great entertainer. "In Rod I Trust" . Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
Rod Stewart was the first Rock Concert I ever saw when I was 16 years old. I saw him and the band Faces at Angel Stadium. I went with my cousins and my cousin Billy who passed on in Oct 31, 2021. Great Memories he is in my heart.
Not much can be said that hasn't already been said by so many. Rod is just one of my favorite artists of all-time. I grew up on his music. He was my step-father's favorite singer and I would listen to him play Rod's music in the car on drives and even as a kid I could visualize the song in my head. Can't go wrong with Rod's music so keep reacting to more. Check out "The Killing of Georgie-Part I & II". Rod can tell a story and the song is amazing.
Oh this man ❤. I went and saw Rod last summer and he is still on fire! I feel so lucky to have had that man singing to me for all of these decades - makes getting old worth it!
I saw Rod at the Cow Palace in 1975 a few months before Ronnie Wood departed for the Rolling Stones, It was such a great concert. I remember Rod was wearing a purple outfit, top and bottom, kind of a silky outfit. Very cool..I have loved all his music from the beginning. You must listen to Every Picture Tells A Story. What a Rockin song
I have been to many concerts and in my opinion his stage performance ranks in the top 2 of my favorite shows. He had an amazing set up and very interactive with the fans.
I've seen Rod Stewart live several times. During a concert he would take a soccer ball and bounce it off his knee, chest etc and then kick it out into the audience, He would do about a half dozen at each concert. Judging by his ball handling skills, he was a good soccer player.
He wrote this song about a slightly older model Brit Ekland whom he was dating at the time, he makes the soccer reference because he’s a fan of that too, (he also played soccer, not sure professional but enjoyed playing) comparing her to his favorite teams😅Rod’s romantic life is like a soap opera, he’s had quite a few famous romances since this song, I think his kids ages may span quite a few decades by his various exwives & current wife too!
This has been mentioned before but as parents I think you'll love "Forever Young" Rod was my first concert at about age 14? 15?.....his "Do you think I'm sexy" years. Sometime in the 70's.
I fell in love with Rod Stewart when I bought the album "Every Picture Tells a Story". Probably not everyone's favorite, but Mandolin Wind made me cry. Played that album until it wore out. 🥰
I remember reading an interview with Rod where he said in their very first gig live, he was so scared that he hid behind the speakers for the first 2 songs before he had the nerve to actually face the audience. LOL. Same with Ozzy. He said his first gig he was so scared to be out there that he pissed himself onstage!!!! Now look what confident legends they turned out to be!!
Love, love, love, some Rod Stewart. Some suggestions. EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY, INFATUATION, BORN LOOSE, CRAZY ABOUT HER, & STAY WITH ME. You're gonna love these songs. I promise. Keep going and enjoy
Always loved this Rod Stewart tune! You’re right that he can do anything. Maybe you could listen to The First Cut Is The Deepest and The Killing Of Georgie Parts 1&2.
This man does such fantastic stuff! If I had to pick my favorites, I'd say they would be "I Was Only Joking," "Some Guys Have All The Luck," "Passion," and "Stay With Me," when he was with The Faces.
Using soccer as a metaphor that describes how he feels about this woman (Alana Hamilton) wraps everything up in a warm and fuzzy glow. I really love "Rod the Mod" from this era. It;s been too long since I revisited this immensely talented artist.
It is great to see how you both truly enjoy music of all genres. I love songs like these ballads. Love songs, sad songs. Songs I grew up on. Songs that talk of a love everlasting, especially in a world where too many people don’t make it. In a way, these kinds of songs make me think of my grandparents. Married 63-years. They lasted through WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. They lasted through the Depression. When my grandma was asked how long she was married, she would say “I was born married”. Who says that anymore? I hope that for you guys. You seem really good together.
Although born in London,England,Rods father was Scottish & Rod considers himself Scottish too,he loves football (soccer) & has a full size soccer pitch at his home,he loves the Scottish National Football team and also loves Glasgow Celtic & can often be seen at Celtic games cheering them on.🍀
The song's not about sports, but he uses his love for soccer teams as a metaphor for his love for her: "You're Celtic, United, but, baby, I've decided you're the best team I've ever seen."
Plus, there were no big bosom ladies with French accents on the soccer teams!
Isn't he talking about Britt Eckland? She was one of his true loves
@@patrickchachulski6804 that would be Dutch accents

According to Rod Stewart this song is about three women, two football teams and a country (Scotland). 😆

Jay & Amber, you'll love Rod's "Every Picture Tells A Story" and "Downtown Train" !!!
I am pretty sure they reviewed Downtown Train a long time ago.
Also, the killing of Georgie would be a great dong to react to.
Jeff Beck on the guitar too!
Such a beautiful song by Rod Stewart!
Have you done “ Reason To Believe” yet? It’s Rod at his absolute best!
Not yet
Tonight’s the Night, I think is the one in front of the fire place
And it’s my other favorite
It was - definitely - about his lady! Specifically his girlfriend at the time, Britt Ekland. The football (soccer) reference was simply a metaphor.
She was actually, according to Rod and her in interviews, the most beautiful song he write until she realized it was about his 2 football teams
It was his gf that was the metaphore and she knew it...his current wife always knew she couldn't compete with Celtic FC so she just went with Rods flow and they been together for decades now.

Sailing by Rod Stewart is a must
Yes, and few people remember this one.

Awwww....so sorry Cindy

"Passion" is a great song by Rod Stewart, and one of those forgotten top 5 hits. That one should be next!!!
Oh, yes, indeed!!!
ANOTHER GREAT TUNE!!
Just don't watch the original video - you'll be too distracted by his dancing to pay attention to the music!
A great under looked album
❤
Not sure why, but this song reminds me of an old adage... 'Learn to love your spouse's little faults and ignore their big ones.' 😁
The Killing of Georgie is a beautiful tragic song.
Sailing (or it could be I am Sailing) is another beautiful song by Rod Stewart.
SAILING...with the video of him on the boat.
Live version of Rod singing Handbags and Gladrags with violins and the lyrics is a MUST.-
Country comforts is another favorite of mine. ❤
