#97 Gluing Bails - 7 Easy Steps

- I quickly show you how I glue bails onto my fused glass jewelry. I have shown this within other videos but wanted to make a separate video that would be easy to find.

STEPS
1. Etch the glass where the bail will be applied. Use any etching tool & bit.
2. Clean off the glass dust with a damp cloth.
3. Apply E-6000 glue to the bail pad.
4. Press etched glass into the bail with glue.
5. Press bail & center the bail on the glass pendant.
6. Allow it to dry for 24 hours on a level surface.
7. Heat in an oven or kiln to set the glue. 270˚F (130˚C) for 20 minutes.
Once it's completely cool it's ready to wear.

I've never run into needing to bake e6000 after curing for 24hrs. What led you to doing that, maybe there's an issue I haven't experienced yet? Thanks much!I

Would never have thought to bake the glue for 20 mins to strengthen the bond!! TFS!!
E6000 is only rated to intermittent exposure of 180F. Any temperature beyond that is likely weakening the bond, which is typical for these types of adhesives, heat actually softens the material. You might not see a breakdown in the bond because jewelry doesn't put the bond under much of a load. E6000 has a peel strength of 34 pounds per linear inch, likely a lot less at 270F. Baking E6000 does not provide any benefits to bond strength, in fact it's just the opposite. Follow the manufacturers directions for proper use.

If I am gluing the bail onto a ceramic or polymer clay piece, would I still do the baking part?
Great question. I’ve never tested ceramic or poly clay. But I would guess that ceramic would be similar because the glaze is essentially a glass coating. But I don’t think it’s necessary to bake it onto the poly clay and baking them may damage the finish.
What kind of chains/ropes would you recommend to pair with these for a necklace for a male?
A leather cord would be nice. Or a chunky silver chain.

Why do you heat the bezels?
I’ve found it makes the glue stronger. I’ve tested many adhesives & techniques & this one works the best for me.
