I loved Windwaker IMMEDIATELY upon release. I liked the Cel Shaded look, it switched things up after the two games made with Ocarina’s engine and it had such a spirit of young adventure.

But I really love it when game developers take risks and try new things, so I’m extremely open minded about games even when I am initially hesitant about their visuals and presentation. I do admire developers who take risks even if it didn't work out too well in the game. But in Windwaker it worked out really well! Been playing it again on my Wii U and I'm having a blast!
I LOVED Windwaker from the start. I’ve always been into animation and such, and with the themes of that game and the setting, I thought it was a beautiful game with a wonderful setting and sailing the ocean was such a fun experience. I never understood the hate, all of my friends growing up liked the game, but we also all bought Psychonauts and loved that too, so we like unique games.
Psychonauts is great and like Windwaker didn't get the credit it deserved until many years later. I think Pychonauts 2 really helped people see what a great game Psychonauts 1 is

I like the hybrid style that Breath of the Wild strikes. Not too realistic that the graphics age poorly, but not too cartoony that the Master Sword had to be redesigned again.
Personally, I'm more biased to Twilight Princess's artstyle because that's what I played first, but I will say that both games look great in their own context.
Windwaker was not received well not just because of the graphics but it failed to continue the story after majora's mask and was very confusing for young players and older players wanted more oot

But I must say, Twilight Princess felt like an Ocarina of Time 3. And although one can appreciate the detail and seriousness the art style gives, it felt unpleasant and uncharming.

Me personally I prefer the art style of twilight princess if I had to pick one, but honestly the graphics don't destroy mylove for wind waker, it's amazing. Botw has the best art style I think so far, as someone said in comments it's meets that perfect middle ground

Wind Waker was phenomenal. They struck gold with that concept, made a major change to the franchise with the graphic choose and the ocean traversal. But it worked really well in the games favor. Every mainline Zelda game has its own unique charm while retaining the heart of the franchise. It’s one of the things I love about the series.

Yeah I remember when when waker came out how people were complaining about it at the time. Pretty ironic that works out considering how people love the game so much today. It does seem to happen with a lot of games. Some people really didn't like Luigi's Mansion back when it came out but now it's super popular. Some people thought that Super Mario Sunshine was extremely flawed but now there's a lot of people who defend it as the greatest Mario game. Sonic Unleashed had pretty average reviews when it came out and there were people who liked it back then sure but there were still a lot of people who didn't, but now a lot of people regard It's as the greatest 3D Sonic game. I wonder how people will feel about Sonic forces years from now. Come on don't think that's far-fetched. Sonic forces has the same modern 3D gameplay that was started with the day stages in Sonic Unleashed which is now beloved.

I know of some actual legitimate flaws that people have pointed out like how short the levels are or how quickly it seems like you get through the game, not to mention the slippery controls of classic Sonic can be hard to handle especially in that later fortress stage, but I mean a lot of people don't like the werehog stages in Sonic Unleashed yet the game is still beloved

Wind Waker is nice but I definitely prefer the look Twilight Princess has. Could never get into Skyward Sword or anything that came after that because of how they tried to blend the two art styles (semi-realistic proportions with way too smooth cartoony textures and colors) when what I really want personally is more stuff that has the style of twilight princess.
I prefer the realistic style. I was part of the bandwagon that initially hated on WW, but it grew on me. It's a great game, but the way to navigate the world is dull and feels like a chore.
I'm the same I hated it at first too. Then it grew on me. Yeah the navigation can be tiresome but the HD version on we makes enough quality of life improvements making the game way better. Which is why Nintendo needs to bring WW to the Switch but I've given up. I don't think they will.
I don't mind the cartoony Zelda games, but I do prefer the more realistic ones, more like BotW and TotK. I also really liked TP, but WW will always have a place in my heart because it was so much fun (especially after the remake included the swift sail so I didn't have to sail bump across the ocean)
They both have their place. Windwaker is about sailing the seas on a high stakes swashbuckling adventure. Where Twilight princess is a moody oppressive game, with a story to match. This might just be a prime opportunity for the lesson, "Your art style/ Graphics, should enhance your game. Not control it." And yes, AAA Games Industry, if you haven't gotten it yet, I'm judging you.
Personally, Twilight Princess is my favorite Zelda game pre-TotK, so I'm biased, but I prefer the more realistic style. BotW has the perfect medium though, the more realistic proportions of Twilight Princess with the vibrant colors and cel shading of Wind Waker. Granted, Skyward Sword did it first, but I personally think BotW did it a bit better, though both are great games regardless
Does anyone remember the IGN trailer for the "movie" that was coming out on April 1, 2009? That one hurt. Also, SSBM hurt too because my brother spent days on Cruel Melee and he dod get 20 ko's, but there was no Sonic and Tails.
I think the problem was everyone thought that that cartooney artstyle was going to be the only artstyle used for all future iterations from here on out. We now know that to not be true (which has revived the Wind Waker franchise), but at the time it was a legitimate concern. I personally LOVE Wind Waker, but I can't imagine playing BOTW or TOTK as toon Link. Lol
Both The realistic one twilight princess gave out decent blended textures and environments to look at with amazing sound affects. Wind waker although it was very cartoony is had gorgeous contrast colors fluent animation.the characters expressions can be very funny even link. They both had decent ratings though wind waker was released before twilight princess So I’ll go with windwaker with this exception, it’s amazing expansion the original GameCube version allowed you to connect the console with a game boy advance so while one player plays the game the other can play as tingle as a team by throwing bombs,offer limited floating to pass Obstacles these support units cost rubies but it was very worth it.
Needless to say, I much prefer Twilight Princess overall. It has a few things that are missing from Breath of The Wild. Thematic elemental dungeons, enemy variety, item / tool variety, and by far the best combat system in the series.
I remember the WW backlash, but we only had seen pictures, there was no trailer or something, but people were up in arms, but the moment they started to play, the cartoonish visuals were forgotten. I can't even remember how much time I spent on just sailing around the vast oceans just for fun. I still like to play it once in a while.
To paraphrase, graphics are temporary, style is permanent Wind Waker is timeless in terms of graphics, and them as well as the sense of exploration put it right behind BOTW and MM in my eyes, amazing game
Legitimately think BOTW has the best art style, not so cartoony that people disregard it, not so realistic it feels weird to play. I prefer that middle ground.
Wind waker was the first zelda I ever played and it made me interested in zelda. I never ended up playing any others besides the switch ones though lol.. I do want to one day, the only obstacle is not having the systems to play them.

Ironically I felt let down when I finished Wind Waker, I kept telling to myself "don't worry it's gonna get good eventually" but eh The Great Sea was a total disappointment map wise, I wish the islands weren't far apart so evenly where there's huge stretches of nothing going on, not even some islets or bare shores like in Pokémon Surf routes, which I felt had way more meat to them And like, man do I not care for so many of the character and enemy designs, why is this game's Beast Ganon this weird puppet? Why are the Poes so thicc? Why does the Deku Tree have a shrek head? Ironically from all the praise I had heard of the game, it didn't live up to my huge expectations ._. game looks beautiful at least though

Wind Waker is nice but I definitely prefer the look Twilight Princess has. Could never get into Skyward Sword or anything that came after that because of how they tried to blend the two art styles (semi-realistic proportions with way too smooth cartoony textures and colors) when what I really want personally is more stuff that has the style of twilight princess.

I prefer the realistic style. I was part of the bandwagon that initially hated on WW, but it grew on me. It's a great game, but the way to navigate the world is dull and feels like a chore.
I'm the same I hated it at first too. Then it grew on me. Yeah the navigation can be tiresome but the HD version on we makes enough quality of life improvements making the game way better.
Which is why Nintendo needs to bring WW to the Switch but I've given up. I don't think they will.
I don't mind the cartoony Zelda games, but I do prefer the more realistic ones, more like BotW and TotK. I also really liked TP, but WW will always have a place in my heart because it was so much fun (especially after the remake included the swift sail so I didn't have to sail bump across the ocean)

Windwaker is about sailing the seas on a high stakes swashbuckling adventure.
Where Twilight princess is a moody oppressive game, with a story to match.
This might just be a prime opportunity for the lesson, "Your art style/ Graphics, should enhance your game. Not control it."

Personally, Twilight Princess is my favorite Zelda game pre-TotK, so I'm biased, but I prefer the more realistic style. BotW has the perfect medium though, the more realistic proportions of Twilight Princess with the vibrant colors and cel shading of Wind Waker. Granted, Skyward Sword did it first, but I personally think BotW did it a bit better, though both are great games regardless

Does anyone remember the IGN trailer for the "movie" that was coming out on April 1, 2009? That one hurt. Also, SSBM hurt too because my brother spent days on Cruel Melee and he dod get 20 ko's, but there was no Sonic and Tails.

I think the problem was everyone thought that that cartooney artstyle was going to be the only artstyle used for all future iterations from here on out. We now know that to not be true (which has revived the Wind Waker franchise), but at the time it was a legitimate concern. I personally LOVE Wind Waker, but I can't imagine playing BOTW or TOTK as toon Link. Lol

The realistic one twilight princess gave out decent blended textures and environments to look at with amazing sound affects.
Wind waker although it was very cartoony is had gorgeous contrast colors fluent animation.the characters expressions can be very funny even link.

So I’ll go with windwaker with this exception, it’s amazing expansion the original GameCube version allowed you to connect the console with a game boy advance so while one player plays the game the other can play as tingle as a team by throwing bombs,offer limited floating to pass

Needless to say, I much prefer Twilight Princess overall. It has a few things that are missing from Breath of The Wild. Thematic elemental dungeons, enemy variety, item / tool variety, and by far the best combat system in the series.

I remember the WW backlash, but we only had seen pictures, there was no trailer or something, but people were up in arms, but the moment they started to play, the cartoonish visuals were forgotten. I can't even remember how much time I spent on just sailing around the vast oceans just for fun. I still like to play it once in a while.

Legitimately think BOTW has the best art style, not so cartoony that people disregard it, not so realistic it feels weird to play. I prefer that middle ground.
It is pretty crazy how they found a good middle ground between the two with Botw, and it still feels like Botw has its own unique look
i still think it would be cool as hell to see an entire remake of wind waker but they're done with twilight princess' graphics

Wind waker was the first zelda I ever played and it made me interested in zelda. I never ended up playing any others besides the switch ones though lol.. I do want to one day, the only obstacle is not having the systems to play them.
Yeah hopefully Nintendo eventually brings all the Zeldas to the Switch 🤞

Ironically I felt let down when I finished Wind Waker, I kept telling to myself "don't worry it's gonna get good eventually" but eh
The Great Sea was a total disappointment map wise, I wish the islands weren't far apart so evenly where there's huge stretches of nothing going on, not even some islets or bare shores like in Pokémon Surf routes, which I felt had way more meat to them
And like, man do I not care for so many of the character and enemy designs, why is this game's Beast Ganon this weird puppet? Why are the Poes so thicc? Why does the Deku Tree have a shrek head?
