      If you live where there is little or no snow, this would be a good option considering its size and feature. But if it snows a lot, the evo's 4 wheel drive will be saver I think.

    • @stigmsr1
      @stigmsr1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      cominacatcha LOL Thanks, I'm good. I live in Charlotte, NC where it shuts down for the expectation of a dusting. I grew up in the northeast and used to enjoy driving 3rd gen f-bodies and other RWD winter beaters in the winter. RWD car with snow tires and a couple bags of salt in the trunk and you have a budget drift car. It's what I miss most about living up north. Waking up around 3 am and drifting the snow covered back roads before the plows came out. Now that I'm older with kids I don't get to do a lot of track days or hooning.

    • @cominacatcha
      @cominacatcha 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Stig Msr. wow, that sure is a nice experience. I live in a tropical country btw so I've never seen winter. I only heard from my Japanese friends that RWD vehicles are quite scary in winter. Haven't tried it myself though.

      +cominacatcha rwd + snow tires is awesome
      Ive gone back and forth on putting snows on the ss for the winter.
      Ended up deciding to keep it safe from salt and idiots on bad tires hitting it.

    • @mdcohen
      @mdcohen 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      TheSmokingTire Chicken or egg? I'm guessing Chevy marketing knew better than product development and they didn't do ads because the car is a bit ill-conceived. It looks like an older cop cruiser with a body kit. Its not a bad design, but not stirring either. I'm pretty convinced with a Camaro-like body with 4 doors this thing would sell very well. The baby boomers (and that's generally who can afford a $45k car) are nostalgic and the younger guys who can buy the things want something sporty looking, not a Malibu with better aero.

      Do you drive a G8 GXP? Or a Grand Prix GXP? You mentioned how much it eats up your front tires. So I wonder if that's because what you drive is front wheel drive (grand prix) or if you suffer from terrible understeer (possibly G8?) Cause they're talking about the RWD Pontiac G8 GXP in this review. No intention of insult, honest question.

      @@akconquest3901 It must be the front wheel drive GXP. I’ve got two VE Commodores (the Australian version of the car) and they don’t chew up font tyres at all. One of them even has over 320,000kms on it now with nothing ever replaced in the front suspension and it doesn’t chew tyres.

I have (sleeper) vanity tags on it, 62L-LS3 and the Chevy dealer doesn't have a clue. I have seen only 1 other on the road heading over to Tampa, red with RI tags, 4DRVETT.

    Hey Matt, we in Australia are also very sad to see Holden close in 2015, especially in South Australia and Victoria where the factories are. My friend was frankly astounded how cars of this quality are produced by such laid-back people. I was fortunate enough to ride in his VF SS Commodore, and it was indeed spacious, had a smooth V8, and as many features as it did horsepower. The VF is a rightful send off to the Holden manufacturing in Australia.

    As a European it's surprising to me that you guys could *not* pass almost everywhere. We only have no passing zones in curves or where the view is limited, and even then by far not every time. In general it's up to the driver being responsible. Same goes for speed limits.

    • @DeepDuh
      @DeepDuh 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +ptibab73 I didn't mean to say that there is *no* speed limit (like on the Autobahn), but it's not like in the US where some road safety administrator apparently does the thinking for you. Outside town it's usually 80km/h here in Switzerland, even on a very curvy road. And Switzerland is conservative, I much prefer driving in France or Germany where my point stands even more I think.

    • @DeepDuh
      @DeepDuh 9 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      +TheSmokingTire Yes, these things are surprising about the US. Politically the US tends to be very 'liberal' (in the European sense of the word, so anti regulation), but in many areas concerning *personal* liberties like speed limits, alcohol consumption, lingering in public places, behavior with law inforcement officers etc. its regulation are much *more* heavy handed than the so-called socialist Europe. It really doesn't quite fit with the 'land of the free' image. Probably should be called "land of the free *corporations*" nowadays.

You can pay for two and have the US gov crash test one, or I think you can import it and register it as a collectors' vehicle but you can only drive it like 2k miles a year or something. 6 banger falcons are sweet but I've heard both the falcon and commodore from the 90s were trash

    GM said they aren't discontinuing it because of low sales, they say it's because they want to discontinue all non-global platforms. Although the sales must not be up to spec, otherwise they would just make it a global platform. The holden Commodore will probably continue as a disguised CTS/CTS-V.

    • @TheCobruhAlienat0r
      @TheCobruhAlienat0r 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Antimation Studios The low sales probably has to do with the fact that you can only buy the car fully loaded. So most people don't want to spend that kind of money, they needed to make it like any other car to where it starts out as a stripper model and then you can option it up.

    • @potaka79
      @potaka79 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Discontinuing because The Holden Commodore is no longer in production in Australia after 2017. As Australia make & design every aspect (except the motor) of this vehicle, then exports to the States it stands to reason if the car is going to be discontinued here it will have a flow on effect else where.

    • @-tr0n
      @-tr0n 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheCobruhAlienat0r they're pricing a LOT of people out starting at $45k USD. you take away pretty much the entire "growing family late 20s early 30s" crew and bump it up to people that are going to buy german no matter what.
      ditch $10k worth of options ADVERTISE IT. i've never even heard of the bloody thing.

    • @MrAntimationStudios
      @MrAntimationStudios 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      tr0n In Australia the base V6 model sells at $28435.82 USD (specific because of the conversion from AUD) and it sells quite well, it was developed by GM Australia for the Australian market, so they don't really care about sales in the US.

    American cousins. If you'd like the wagon or ute (pickup) version of this car you'd better be quick if you want a brand new one. With the factory closing this year the numbers in storage are dwindling. You can buy one here and have it converted to LHD in the US. A better bet is to buy a demo or secondhand unit with low kms (miles) on the clock and then get it modified Stateside. I own the wagon version here in Australia and I love it. The weight distribution is a little different (wheelbase the same) and I reckon it handles better than the sedan plus it's a real eye catcher.

    As a market comparison the 328i in Australia is $70,400 plus options. The Audi S3 is $70,100. The Commodore SSV Redline (near identical to the car reviewed) is $56,000. So it is 20% less expensive compared to those cars in it's domestic market. The recent restyling to the front is a slight visual improvement to my eyes so hopefully that makes it to the US market soon. They also tweaked the rear suspension too.

      +Riley Nelson this is the last model of the holden to be exported to the U.S. then the SS model will be dropped in 2017 until they find a car to base it on as the commodore is going to germany but will still be designed in australia but it may be all or front wheel drive as a V6 or 4 Cylinder only model the Chevrolet ss may die once again as well as the V8 holden and All chevy models from aus will be dropped in 2017 such as the captiva cruze and sonic as well as other muscle such as caprice and the whole zeta platform with most cars receiving updates such as engine chassis body and interior in 2017 most of ford's and GM's cars will be replaced in 2017 with euro made or designed cars (sad but true)

    I bought a'16 SS M6, and I couldn't be happier with it.I rarely drive a 4dr, but my CTS-V M6 Coupe wasn't going to cut it. I installed a set of CNC'd heads and the ASA cam and it now makes 470 hp/tq to the wheels. The magnetic ride shocks are very smooth in touring mode nice and firm in sport mode. It easily runs in the 190's (194 so far), yet moves 4 people in comfort.

    I autocrossed my E39 M5 a bunch.... similar to this car and definitely good fun at an autocross. Very different strategy and execution on traversing the cones compared to most other cars out there. There's something about a big car that has a nice tuned suspension that's fun to drive but not so harsh like a tiny sports car.

      Apparently they tried to keep this car under the table because they only wanted to import a certain number of them. And NASCAR as an advertisement in 2017 is nothing like it was in 1997, you might as well be advertising the car to golfers. I live and work around Charlotte NC, NASCAR country, and this car is pretty popular around here due to the mentality of moonshiners running the big cars with big v8’s back in the day. There’s still a lot of wholesome muscle car people here, and this car fits in with the area perfectly.

    this is the equivalent now of the VF Series 2 Commodore SS Redline. In Australia we don't get adjustable shocks(just FE3 spec suspension), but there is a bimodal exhaust now, and a Euro style "sound pipe" from the intake system to the firewall. Everything else is about the same. $60k drive away.
    And yeah, it is a pity they are all gone in 12-18 months...

    To add to the G8 GXP discussion the market for those cars really hasn't been affected much. Only ~1850 gxps were ever made (2009 was the only year) and roughly half of them were manual transmission, the fact of how rare a manual g8 is will probably keep those prices high for a long time.

    Hey there, TheSmokingTire. I really appreciate your One Takes (in particular your one takes of various Porsche products, the brand I aspire to/aspire to owning, one day). Although this video dates back to October 2015, I only viewed it for the fist time tonight (12 March 2016). As an Australian (and even though I'm in the blue [Ford] corner), I'm proud that you like the automotive product that originates here in my homeland - the Chevy SS. Given you are disappointed that this car will not see past 2017, can you imagine how disappointed red-blooded Australians are that we are going to lose our vehicle manufacturing industry, progressively through 2016-2017 (somehow between the powers that be, we are not mart enough to have an auto industry any more). Anyway, say a prayers for Australians that won't be able to bet products like this much more in the future. Kind regards...

The GXPs are all in the hiigh 20s to mid 30s and they are pretty rare to see. The Chev Caprice PPV cop car is the same as g8GT for the most part and that was the car that followed up the G8s. Just thought I'd put some info here for everyone asking in the comments.
    This car is designed and built in Australia by GM Holden, and will be discontinued in 2017 due to the closing down of Holden's factories in Australia.
    Holden will become a full-importer in Australia, sourcing cars from Chevrolet US, GM South Korea and Opel's factories in Germany and Poland. It's a sad time for the Australian automotive industry as Holden, Ford and Toyota are all closing their factories here in Australia leaving us with zero local car manufacturing.

    Brings a tear to my eye knowing these beautiful beasts are soon to be extinct . (Sob). On the bright side , they're going out with a bang. The SS you drove was 350 hp stock , the last versions will be 410 hp, if you go to the upgraded version ( the r8 , not sure if that will be available in US ) the hp increases to 575 . That's not the end of the story , the GTS is the premium and this model , although the figures are not yet released , is expected to be around 630 hp . That's still not the end of the story , as there is a rumour that a limited edition GTS R will be offered , though I have no idea of the specs . Cheers and keep up the good work , and if you're ever in Aus , drop in for a coldie

It's completely stock. I intend to modify it to suit my tastes. I bought manual, black, no sunroof, and full sized spare. I paid a lot but for me it's about enjoying the drive. The car makes me smile and it makes those around me smile for the most part. Four doors and a loud powerful engine and a manual transmission... what more could you ask for?

    Beautiful color as well as tasteful wheels and just the right amount of camber.

    Like Matt said, everyone likes to hate on GM, but they definitely did things properly with this car. I'd love to own an SS...I feel like it would be an excellent platform for modifications. And the fact that it is 2015 and Chevy stuck a manual gearbox in something besides just the Camaro and Corvette is way cool.

      +MXshredder125 Honestly the best thing would be to go with the Cadillac CTS V or heck even a V Sport model. There's a simplicity to this car that's nice but it doesn't cut it in the performance car world. Reliable? Yes but good for the job? No.

    Matt if you haven't already check out the exhaust clips of the Holden VF Series 2 SS. Comes with the bi-modal exhaust standard.

    Finally a proper sedan. And a manual box that knocks a few bucks off MSRP. Win-win.

    I used to make videos for Holden Design in Melbourne Australia where these things were dreamed by a bunch of really talented enthusiasts. It was a very secure area, of course, but I was able to wander around and see stuf I probably wasn’t supposed to see like, in one dark corner where they referenced other makes, was a BMW M5 suspension. One the design guys said to me that for the VE platform , from which this was developed, the basic benchmark for handling was the M5- and this was even for the bottom end family saloon. These Holden guys were real heroes. They fought timid GM bureaucracy and some absolute, utter, bastardry out of Detroit to develop what they knew real enthusiasts really wanted. Unfortunately it got virtually no promotional support because of nasty politics. BTW, these are the same guys who were given the poison chalice of a half designed, unbuildable , Camaro to fix and did a redesign to make it viable, although they all thought it was an utter dog!

    Awesome video, and that car is a really pretty color. The SS has a nice color selection!
    Of course it would be good in the "off road" section--it was designed with the Outback in mind! (sorry, I had to!)

    Hey Matt, just a little heads up you CAN get the S4 with the manual transmission but you can't get it for 45 grand anymore it starts at almost 50 thousand :(

    I really love this car. It's just more than I can afford. I can see this being one of those cars that everyone wants to buy used, esp in manual but (as evidence is suggesting) no one wants to fork out for new. Even though the manuals are sadly not selling well new I think they will fetch a good premium over automatics in the used market.
    I am also interested in exactly what this guy did to his suspension to get rid of the dead spot. Can this be done without an auto-X alignment (IE an alignment that doesn't consume tires on the highway).

      The manuals from what ive gathered are moving: the autos, not as well.
      I maxed the front camber adjustment (set screw between knuckle and strut), and a touch of toe out in front. Also added some -camber in the rear and rolled the rear fenders (mostly for future fitments. I.e c5z wheel set).
      Its nothing extreme. 10k miles altered between 2 sets neither set is showing any wear to be concerned over.
      The wheels mounted when filmed had a signifigant amount of outside shoulder wear from autox on c5 when it didnt have enough -camber.
      The ss hasnt seen an autox day since june. But the forecast for the weekend when the filming took place was rainy and cold. I dont fit with a helmet in our miata or c5 with roof on/up.

    Funny to see the slight changes that happens from the time it lands stateside.Just from my quick view the seats are different (possibly hybrid hsv/chevy uprights) and down in Australsia (the region not misspelt Australia) the MRC/Driving modes is reserved for HSV (Holdens version of say AMG).
    And for 2015 they've bumped the power we get from the 6.0L to 408hp from 362hp.

    For reasons unknown, GXP's seem to have appreciated since the introduction of the SS. Resale of GXP's in great condition and low miles are in the mid 30's, up from the low 30's.

    Great video as always Matt! Seriously though, how can you say that the SS is a better car than the E39 M5 😝? Sure it may be newer and faster but the build quality is no comparison and the S62 is a far more complex engine with individual throttle bodies, g-sensitive oil pump system, etc. it would be cool if you could review an E39 M5 soon!

    Out of curiosity, does North America get the bi-modal exhaust? The Commodores give you the choice of a quiet or loud setting that is controlled through the media interface.

    • @Croak1
      @Croak1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +15sixmedia Bi-modal wasn't offered in Australia until 2016 model year, same as the US (and Australia got the LS3 in a base Holden finally). If you wanted bi-modal or LS3 before that, you had to buy a much more expensive HSV.

    you ask what other rwd sedan you could get for $45K new with a manual? I can't think of any other model, BUT the SS isnt sold in Canada! Every time I see a G8 I wonder why the SS never replaced it here. There certainly are plenty of chargers and 300s driving around so the market for "American" rwd sedans is still strong.

      BMW 335i though that's base price and base in BMW means very base. They make a lot of money on options that are standard on a $20k Kia.

      +Russell Robinson wondering the same thing. pretty much every vehicle that isn't a truck or a honda in my town is either a new camaro, mustang, challenger, charger or cadillac.
      and we don't get the SS. never even knew it existed.

    What is an alternative to this car is a Hyundai Genesis sedan 5.0 R-Spec or a Lexus ISF with the 5 liter engine as well both cars making well over 400 horsepower and are probably more than likely more reliable
