I imported a Mega Drive M1 from the UK so I can mod it to run on 60hz with the correct crystal, also because I wanted a VA4 PAL revision. I noticed the composite quality is much superb over all the NTSC units I came across. Almost no rainbow banding.

Interesting 🤔 sounding like the pal version is the better choice this time around

Just ordered a switchless region and IGR modded megadrive to go with my OSSC, looking forward to some fun gaming but mostly got it as I intend to code a megadrive game.

Great video! This was something ignored in the beginning when I first started collecting. Oh boy, was I wrong. Once you play in 60hz there's no going back.
I'm glad you showed off Sonic in 50 vs 60hz. Because the difference is really apparent there.

There is actually (though really not many) a few 50hz games that are better than their 60hz counterparts. But these are generally exclusively Europe centric titles where they were designed to run at 50hz and took advantage of the increased resolution. I think Dreamcast Rayman 2 in 50hz with anamorphic wide screen was probably the best example.
I'll never forget the first time I played my Dreamcast after treating myself to an RGB SCART cable and my TV suddenly displaying the 60hz test in full colour. I couldn't actually put my finger on what it was, but I knew Sonic Adventure was running better :D

Surprised you didn’t mention pal optimization on certain games, or the lack of ntsc optimization on games like shadow of the beast, which actually runs too fast in america. Good vid for the rest 👍

Yeah that is right. There is a lot to the subject I thought to just cover the basic, but thanks for adding to this feller

Yes I'm pretty sure the music in Sonic 2 is optimised for pal consoles so it should run too fast on a modded console at 60hz, though that may not be the best example of music running to fast on a modded Mega Drive with pal optimised games. A lot of releases after that original Sonic game had optimised music at the very least. Pal Earthworm Jim's gameplay is also sped up to match the NTSC version so that would play and sound faster than intended.

Super sloppy of game devs and publishers not bothering to develop titles correctly for multiple regions. The copy-paste of 60Hz optimised titles into PAL regions was a slap in the face for customers to be honest.
Overall whilst we did miss out a little due to the 60Hz/50Hz stuff anyone who visited America in the 80s was glad we had PAL over here - the picture quality on their NTSC TVs was awful compared to PAL. PAL had 625 scan lines in comparison to NTSC at 525 and the saying back then about NTSC was that it stood for "Never Twice the Same Colour" due to some awful compromises and design decision made when the US was first trying to come up with a standard to support black & white TVs alongside newer colour TVs.
In Europe we also had almost universal support for RGB in our TVs (typically over a SCART connection) and this is something our US cousins also missed out on. Over here we had many of our consoles connected via wonderful crisp RGB SCART cables and our US cousins usually had to put up with fuzzy composite or RF.

I was getting confused by the explination of reason for 60Hz but you explained it. It's got nothing to do with TVs that can handle 60hz, it's as you say, it's lazy developers. Play a pal optimized mega drive game and most won't be able to tell the difference. Play it on an era specific TV and you'll prefer the Euro RGB over US composite or RF.

Composite is actually preferred for a lot of Mega drive games due to the smaller colour palette. RGB scart is still good but certain games like Sonic look blown out.

  • @KrzysztofK1982

NTSC has a faster refresh rate so it appears faster, but PAL has 625 lines of resolution as opposed to 525 for NTSC so PAL image is better quality. These extra lines of resolution on PAL is why PAL can play NTSC but not vice versa

What you didnt mention is alot of pal games (SNES, not sure about MD) will not run correctly when switched to 60hz. Clock speeds are out or in some cases, the game glitches.

    Is the software-based switchless mod for Genesis possible by detecting the region codes like 4A 20 20 (J), 45 20 20 (E), 55 20 20 (U), 4A 55 20 (JU), 4A 45 20 (JE), 55 4A 20 (UJ), 55 45 20 (UE), 45 55 20 (EU), or 45 4A 20 (EJ) for region-locked games but not 4A 55 45 (JUE), 4A 45 55 (JEU), 55 4A 45 (UJE), 55 45 4A (UEJ), 45 55 4A (EUJ) or 45 4A 55 (EJU) for region-free games at 0x1F0 address in the ROM header similar to how SNES' SuperCIC works in hardware by detecting the cartridge's CIC?

    Heyo,
    I recently got a PS3 slim.
I play games such as GTAiv, Max Payne 3, Call of Duty World at War, Medal of Honor Airborne, Dead Red Redemption, LA Noire...
Which portable monitor should I be looking for under 175 euros +-?
    Should it be above 60hz?
    Something like 75 or 120hz?
Cheers, and thanks for any tip.

since you have a ps3 60hz will be just fine above that you either need a PS5, XSX/S or a PC since like the PS4 it wont support anything above that
also portable monitors are pretty expensive is it your only option?

I'm thinking of modding my Mega Drive. The console power supply says 50hz on it, so will a third party 50/60hz power supply be needed, or can games run at 60hz regardless?

    • @Daz5Daz

It was quite short lived - crushed by the steam rollers of the Speccy and C64. It was on sale in the UK for less than 2 years and gone by 1984 so its games are of that 1982 to 84 era - Joust, Chuckie Egg, Moon Cresta, Jet Set Willy etc. but like all systems back then it had some wonderfully quirky games from bedroom coders.
The abiding memory of seeing the Dragon in the shops was that many of the games we loved ended up in monochrome on the Dragon and that the colour games were often bathed in shades of green - The Dragon could not display black characters, instead opting for a dark shade of green.
