After many years on rhythm guitar I am just coming over to bass for the first time and so far I love it. You are the first player I have seen who points out chords as an avenue for a good sound and I think I noticed the use of traditional triads there, which is a boon for me because I already use them all over the guitar neck.
Hey Charlie! Yea man all about the triads all over the neck. Really appreciate your attention to detail and I’m so glad you’re enjoying rocking on the bass! Hope you continue to follow the channel
I think another great thing about these basses is they get packaged with a rumble 15, a gig bag, and I think a cable as well for under 400. You could probably shop around used and get everything closer to 250-300 if you're lucky (maybe even get a 40 instead) but its still an awesome deal for the beginner bassist.
Yes I got the kit from GC just a touch under 300. I finally sold the little rumble and got a powered speaker. Going okay so far may still get a bass amp in future..not sure
I've been playing bass for 24 years and never personally had any issues with Squire. I've taken them on tour all over the UK and played maybe 100 gigs with one. I really do rate them for the price they retail at. I just got the exact white Affinity PJ you feature. So far very happy.
I used to play bass decades back. I had a Music Man fretted and a custom made fretless from Jim Cairns. I was never very good and sold them to make room. When I was buying an acoustic one day at Ivor Mairant's off Oxford Street (late 80s?), they offered me a discount. For fun, I took it in the form of the early version of the Squier Precision bass. For years, it has sat with my other guitars pretty much unplayed. A couple of weeks ago, I had a mad moment. The action on it has always been stupidly high, so I lowered it right down, reset the neck, cleaned it up, replaced the original strings with some really good flat wounds, and basically gave it a lot of love. I haven't replaced anything, just set it up carefully. Wow! It plays beautifully. With the addition of some foam under the strings (I use a strip cut from Magic Foam Eraser cleaning sponges - the density is perfect), I get a gorgeous sound, even just plugging straight into an interface without any processing at all. With the foam, it is instant Motown. Why didn't I do this years ago? I play it every day, at the moment (badly because I am 30 years out of practice), and am loving it. (PS - my biggest regret was selling that Cairns - it was a beautiful instrument, and I hadn't realised how rare it was.)
Thanks so much!! Everyone seems to love the tone of this bass but after a year i am still clueless about the knobs! This video helps --not sure why fender doesnt make this more clear on Fender Play
No problem! Glad you found it helpful. Essentially there are three knobs. One controls the tone output of the P (neck) pickup , one controls the tone output of the J (bridge) pickup, and one controls the overall volume output of the instrument
Hey Dylan! This is a great review! I'm about to go to my music shop to buy an affordable bass for recording and your review really helped me out in my decision making! I also left a like and subscription! Keep up the good work!
I sold my '83 Precision (at a $500 profit) to buy a new Affinity Jazz, and I think anything priced higher is a waste of money, unless perhaps, you're a studio musician. It sounded great, felt good, had high quality workmanship. I only eventually sold the Affinity because I changed to short scale (Squier Jaguar SS). By the way, I had the sunburst J-Bass, and it had a two-color, not three-color burst.
Nice job young man! I own both an Affinity Jazz and PJ that I upgraded with new Fender tuners and used Fender pickups and they're really nice. No, not quite as good as an MIM Fender, but hey I got two Squiers for the same money!
This is the bass i bought, without knowing its a PJ bass and stuck a sticker of my yt dp on the bass and its the best purchase ive made... it sounds incredible and stepped up my bass playing
AMAZING review and demo. Just what I wanted to see. I’m a long time guitar player but I really want an affordable bass to test the waters but don’t want to compromise on quality. This seems like it fits the bill in both looks and sound, it just moved to number one on my list. Liked and subscribed!
Hey man this comment means a lot to me I’m so glad you found the video helpful and that you subbed. Appreciate it bro! No doubt the bass is Bigtime class for the price
just bought one of these because I liked the sound, replaced my old Crate Electra knockoff P-Bass, and thankfully the reviews are glowing too so I know I didn't make a bad decision!
Getting my Bass soon. I love how flush the strings are to the neck. I had a beginner Ibanez bass but the strings seemed too high and my fingers got sore very soon
I just git one earlier this week. I have a Squire Classic Vibe P, and got this mainly for the J. Anyway I love the versitility and it sounds great. Surprised at the good quality in this price range
I'm a guitar player and want a bass. I was reaching higher to a used MIM but I think this will work for me. It looks like these newer affinities have the same bridge and tuners as the classic vibes. I really want the pj configuration and this looks like it will do me well to learn bass techniques.
Hey! Thanks for commenting. Personally i'm a huge fan and i think this offers just as much as a MIM at a way better price so I'd say go for it. Ive had a couple engineers tell me they couldn't believe how good this bass sounded during sessions where i brought it in. Definitely good for practice and getting more comfortable.
Hey, excellent review thanks. I only have a 6 string fretless, which I love with all my heart & soul, but I really want a bog standard fretted 4 too. Just seen one online for 100GBP (slightly more than a good bar of chocolate 😂) so thanks to you I know it’s a good deal 👍
Maybe its because im inexperienced, but I cant tell hardly any difference between the sound of these Squier basses versus American Fender basses, like I can hear the difference in tone between an Epiphone Les Paul and Gibson. I have the money for a high end bass, but I just don't feel the need. I'm happy with this bass and I love the PJ pickup config.
Agreed I can only tell the difference in the feeling in my hands. When I have a great p bass it’s certainly nicer feel and fingerboard touch wise but as far as tone not a massive difference
Great review. You got yours used, so no comment on how the setup is from the factory...what about strings? Any preference? I have one of these and I agree...it punches WAY above its weight. Good second bass for an intermediate player, or starter bass for someone who wants to get real good before they lay out real cash for something expensive.
Hey Myron! Thanks so much for watching, and your kind words on the review. Agree i think it's a great backup bass if you're a serious player who doesn't always want to tote and instrument worth 1k+ to local gigs. These are DR's medium Gauge round wound Stainless strings, pretty standard set. I've never put flats on in but i could see it potentially sounding good. Personally aside from on a classic P Bass i'm not that into flats. Glad you're enjoying yours too!
Hi i'm planning to get this bass as my very first one and i wondered if you think its great for begginers? Also, do you know where these basses are made? Your demo is so cool !
Hey Emma thanks so much for your kind words, I hope you'll subscribe! I think it's a wonderful beginner bass. Unless you're looking for something short scale. As far as full size basses go its awesome! Mine was made in indonesia
Hey man, I'm a piano player but am looking to start learning the bass this year. Would you recommend this for beginners or do you have any others in mind?
I got this model a few months ago. I am just starting out but I was wondering if you could do some tabs for beginner bass lines. Either oldies or funk or whatever music really, just something to get the newbies playing. If you could, I would really appreciate it.
Hey Eric! Thanks so much for your sub. I have a lot planned for the next couple months on the channel and will 100% be doing some tab and beginner lessons so keep a look out for them :)
I am confuse between this bass or ephiphone eb-3. Which is better and worth it? I am still a beginner but i want the first bass to be relevant for longer time. Or any recommendation? I love to play jazz/indie and sometime rock/metal
Hey Mimi! Thanks for watching. Personally as an owner of both I prefer the Squier. However...The EB-0 is a smaller scale bass so it is a little easier to move around the fretboard. In my opinion the variety and quality of tones you can get are a little better on the Fender Squier but the EB-0 does what it does well. Hope that helps! Good luck on your search :). For indie/ rock/metal....No question the squier is superior
personally i think this has way better tone and look but i think it could be based on feel. Havent played ibanez as much. But i think for low price this is better
The build is good for what you pay. Definitely still has a “Squier” feeling to it. The wood is a little cheaper and It’s a little bit of a beater but my feeling is that it still sounds incredible and you get a ton for what you pay for
@@dylandebiasemusic Thx for your quick answer mate, I may buy one but I don't really know because I want a new bass maybe with 6 chords I don't know. And I don't have a lot of money for it... too much guitar

They should get packaged with an hx stomp since most people have some kind of modeler that sounds bette than a rumble 15 already 😅

Couldn’t agree more man. It’s pretty rare that I find myself in a situation where I need anything more than what the Squier can do. Enjoy!!!
