  • We're back with Dr. Richard Campbell to find out more about the cousins of mangos. Mangifera, the genus that mango belongs to, has other fruiting plants that Dr. Campbell has collected from around the world. These 'wangos' may be the future of mangos!
Dr. Richard Campbell is a Mango Expert who runs Mango Men Homestead.

A tasting table with a Wango, a oderatta, a maprang, a white mango, a castori and any other relatives would be very interesting.

Exciting! I can hardly wait to see what's next! Florida mangoes are tantalisingly frustrating to grow where I live.

It will be very interesting to see what comes from this. I tried to grow two maprangs in Palm Bay florida, and both died. I just ordered a mangifera oderatta from tropical acres. Well, see... i have 2 cashews that I grew from seeds from India. Distant mango relatives. I would love to try a white mango as well.

I wonder why he did not put identity tags on those variety of plants. I hope he has some kind of layout map of all those plants with proper identification marked. Trusting that kind of important information solely on one's memory is not optimal.

I'd love to know what dwarfing rootstock works. Which varieties respond to the Piva rootstock?

When this new fruit hits the streets of Mexico
it will likely get a good laugh. Maybe even referring to it as Mango-Wango.
And initially that would probably be okay. Except that Wango is generally a slang word used in mocking and to point out that a person or some thing is of low performance, sub-par or useless.
Nevertheless, I pray this Chimera of a fruit might ultimately be crowned a more unique and robust sounding name. And perhaps even a name that is a bit more mysterious, just in case it does become the new king of fruits.
I'll still try it though. But since I don't live in Florida I might never get to😅
