I finally got it!!! Thanks so much! I just wasn't trusting my lead foot at all, so I wasn't shifting my weight when it was time. Once I just let go and let it do its thing next thing I knew I was going backwards. Thanks for posting 😊
I'm glad you mentioned that you're not totally picking up your feet. I was taught at a derby practice with completely picking up your feet and I do not feel comfortable doing it that way. I transition fine without completely picking up my feet and so I'm glad that you mentioned it's okay not to do so. Thank you. Great vid.
This came out really good 👍 Transitions/tomahawks and crossovers are keeping my ability and speed down and I think this will help me pass the dreaded skills test. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
I feel like I could actually do this now. Unfortunately I'm at a computer and not on the track. Thank you so much. You should post more videos like this! I like the way you make it so simple.
Wow I've been really bad at these but this video really cleared my mind on what I might be doing wrong! Cant wait to get on my skates again and try again, thank you!!
Very helpful! I'm in the middle of learning this skill in my fresh meat orientation...I find that my foot turns wide and iLife you mentioned in the video, I think my stability isn't quite there...so, I will practice the weight shift more...also, I'm afraid to transition on both sides...we have to pass this skill by transitioning on both feet....
I literally tried this for hours today and I still can't do it. As soon as I pick on foot up and turn it, it's like the other one doesn't know what to do lol and star stumbling. 😔😤
D_Lambily It sounds like you have two possible issues, one potentially caused by the other. The stumbling is generally because you don't really trust/know how to get to that first turning foot, so you have to put the second one down too soon. That lack of trust can be caused either by just being uncomfortable, or because you are leaving the top of your body behind as you turn.
I do think its a trust issue lol. I'm practicing on concrete with no pads lol, so I am terrified of falling. If I were in a rink I would be more willing to risk falling to get it right. But my pride keeps me from going to a rink until I have mastered as skill lmao. Is there an exercise that will help me become more comfortable with turning my first foot?
They are actually both heartless. I recently switched off of poisons, and I've got so much more control now. The poisons were just too sticky and were keeping me from plowing correctly, among other things. Skate on what feels right for you though.
of all the videos I have studied ,being fresh meat n all...THANK YOU!! I like the way you teach..i am having trouble just plain skating backwards though...do u have a video for that?
Un poco chapucera la transición .. pie delante pie atras y giro de cadera rápido .. sin pasar por posición de águila ... de atrás hacia adelante apoyando talones, de adelante hacia atrás apoyando puntas ... muy de principiantes y poco efectiva .
Sorry you feel that way, but it is understandable as the video is aimed at beginners. There are definitely ways to speed up the standard transition, but I was trying to demonstrate the basics of a mohawk/side surf transition. Anyway, feel free to film a response, I'd love to see it. Had to run the comment through translate, so if I got some of the details wrong my apologies ;)

IN A SINGLE SENTENCE! I HAVE TO TRUST IT!!!! WOOOO!! Thanks you for that clarity. I had the best skate EVER. Thank you! Thank You!!!!!!!

Thank you for this, I never thought of working on shifting my weight off skate and on skate before actually applying this skill to transitions.

This is such an excellent video demonstrating the technique. Thanks for creating it.

Now it's clicking (at least, mentally)! Super excited for practice, now.

you make it look easy!
this was very helpful, this video is the reason why I can transition thank you :)

Great advice! I cant wait to give this a go! :)
Ugh okay it makes so much more sense now!
Thank you for the video!
Also, which wheels do you skate one? One set looks like Poisons but I can't identify the other set. :)
This was SUPER helpful! THANK YOU! :)
My roller derby team is hard and thank you for this video I'm much better at this now
excellent video
Nice. I just really hope you’ve gotten a separate mike so we don’t have to hear the wheels over your voice.
