One of my favourite Christmas reads is The Twelve Clues of Christmas by Rhys Bowen. It’s set in the early 1900s (perhaps during the war?) in a tiny village in England and is a stand-alone book in the “Her Royal Spyness” series. If you like a cosy, quintessential English Christmas, this book has it all!
The Book Charmer by Karen Hawkins is a book I just finished. It's a book about a place called Dove Pond, NC, and the town was founded by a family with the last name Dove and every couple of generations there are 7 sisters born in this family with a magical gift. This is the first book and it's about one of the sisters named Sarah and books talk to her...they really TALK to her! Lol. She has a way of giving the right book to the right person at certain times and this book centers around a woman named Grace that moves very reluctantly to Dove Pond with her niece and her adoptive mother who's family was from Dove Pond originally.
My favourite winter book this year was The Winterhouse Series. It is a middle Grade Trilogy and takes place in a Castlelike Hotel around Christmas. And there is reading and skiing and ice skating involved and I just loved the books. My alltime favourite childrens book is the Winter Book out of the seasons of The Mice Of Brambly Hedge. These books are the most cosy, cute, quaint childrens books I ever read.... love your videos BTW!!!!!!!!!!!
I just looked to see and couldn’t believe it, a set of 14 LM Montgomery books (all the Anne books, The Story girl and The golden Road, ) all for 49 pence , kindle edition on Amazon uk , I’m going to have so many happy hours of reading.
Normally i don’t watch youtube video’s till the end but with your vids, i could watch 50 in one day haha. You are so down to earth, exciting and im a book wurm like you. Im 14 so im still really young but still LOOOVE your video’s.
Oh Desi..I just can’t describe how much i love what you’re doing.❤️ This year is literally you and your magical videos what makes my Christmas and gets me into Christmas spirit. I just can’t thank you enough for you being you, and working so hard to make magic like this. After a year and a half subscribing and being literally obsessed with your videos, you are getting better and better, and still brightening our days! You are literal angel, and the queen of the most atmospheric, aesthetic, and fairytale like videos. Much love❤️
It’s March while I’m watching this and you inspire me to want to read. I haven’t read a novel or any books in a very long time. Thank you for your enthusiasm and all your videos brings me joy. 🌻🌻🌻
What a wonderful video. I just added a lot of books to my wishlist, future TBR. I too love books set in snowy winter. Right now, we are in the middle of a snowstorm! I also downloaded Likewise. Thanks for your recommendations.🌲❄️⛄
I just finished reading The Snow Child and wow. So magical and beautiful. The winter vibes are top notch. I also really enjoyed the winter night trilogy, which starts with The Bear and the Nightingale. Both books are based on Russian folklore, but they're very different kinds of books.
I loved all the book recommendations. Holiday By Gaslight sounds amazing! I just picked up a couple of good books today, one is a holiday read called A Very Murderous Christmas. It contains 10 classic crime stories by authors such as Ruth Rendell, John Mortimer, , Margery Allingham as well as others. The synopsis says it all and I can't wait to read it!
Just one word *"I love you"* 💜 I lost all my Christmas happy vibes a long ago and suffering from reading slum..and the minute I saw this video and wonderful Christmassy recommendation my vibes came fast as ussain bolt🦄
If you like illustrated books based around Christmas in the countryside, I'd recommend Winter Story by Jill Barklem & Little Grey Rabbit's Christmas by Alison Uttley. I like all the vintage details, they always take me back & make me feel cosy & festive.
Just found out ur channel and I can't explain how much I looooooooove you!!! Please please please never stop these amazing videos! I feel like I wanna watch them all my life!!!
The Blue Castle!!! Haha Sorry for all of my comments. I am obsessed with that book hahaha Loved the Golden Road and Story Girl! So glad you are recommending them! Yay! I keep discovering more as I watch more of your videos haha
I loved "A Holiday By Gaslight". It was the perfect read for a long wintery weekend in a beautiful Victorian B&B on The Cape. I felt like I stepped back in time. Thank you for all wonderful recommendations. I want them all. :)
I've read the castle in the clouds multiple times in the last years (in german thogh) and I adore it with my whole heart. I hope you will enjoy it too!
In the mystery genre, you might like Ragnor Jonasson's Snowblind which takes place in northern Iceland. Also, William Kent Krueger's Cork O'connor series, which takes place in Minnesota, is very atmospheric. It also deals with the relations between Native Americans and the non native population. Delves into what it means to be Native American, or part Native Amey. Start with Iron Lake.
If you like "A Holiday by Gaslight" I would recommend "In Pursuit of a Gentleman" by Arlem Hawks AND "The Captain and Miss Winter" by Sally Britton. They're both a part of the Regency Fairy Tale Retelling series which I adore all of but these are particularly wintery settings perfect for winter and Christmas time. They're sweet short reads so if you're looking for something to pick up and devour these are for you. Also, IPoaG will make you crave gingerbread cookies.
my brother sat down next to me when I started watching this and he said, "is that taylor swift?" and I said "uh no" and he thought I was lying!!! anyways such a cozy video as always!!!
You should try Yrsa Sigurdardottir. She’s an Icelandic mystery/suspense writer. They’re extremely atmospheric and eerie, especially her more recent ones. They’re perfect for curling up with cozy blankets and hot chocolate.
Coming back here after reading A Holiday by Gaslight by Mimi Matthews! I love, love the book! Sophie and Ned's chemistry is unmatched. I was swooning over them from start to finish. I can't stress enough how I adore the book. Thank you for recommending it! I love your recommendations. I know it's June and I'm supposed to be reading summer books of some sort, but...I'm reading Christmas On The Island next.💖 P.S. I've read the first three books in the Anne of Green Gables series which I enjoyed very much as well. And I read Persuasion, my second Jane Austen Book. And I liked it, too. All thanks to you, you inspired me to read them. Love you and your contents!💖😘
I highly, highly recommend the Winter Night trilogy (The Bear and the Nightingale, The Girl in the Tower, The Winter of the Witch) by Katherine Arden! The story is set in medieval (I think) Russia and basically revolves around old Russian fairytales. While people are starting to forget them due to the strong influence of Christianity, the girl Wasja has the second sight: She can see all the creatures from the fairytales for they are actually real. We follow Wasja all through her childhood and youth where she faces big problems for being different and not conforming to the then existing gender rules. She is deemed a witch, outcast and struggling to find her place in the world. There is a lot of adventure, mystery and magic, but also a lot of depth, struggle and tragedy. The language of the books is very vivid and simply beautiful. There are no books which will make you feel the winter atmosphere stronger!
Another amazing wintery book is The Wolf Princess by Cathryn Constable. Please don't roll your eyes at the title; it's a novel about orphan Sophie who is very excited to go on a school trip to Russia with her two best friends, but the trio is separated from their schoolmates and lost in the harsh Russian winter storms. They get rescued by a very beautiful princess who seems to be keeping many, many secrets ... I won't say anything more to avoid spoilers but believe me, this is one of my all time favourite books, it is elegantly written and the setting is just magical, and I think a lot of us will relate with Sophie. It's full of suspense and cosiness and I loved it so, so much. ❄️💙
Hi Desi, thank you for the book recommendations. I would like to recommend Sky Song too, by Abi Elphinstone. It's middle grade, along the vibes of Way Past Winter, with gorgeous, snowy landscapes. I also like The Christmasaurus by Tom Fletcher. It's very cosy and you can't help but feel lots of Christmas vibes.
I like "the bear and the nightingale"by Katherine Arden. Its the first book in the winter night trilogy and is based in medieval Russia. It has winter, mythology and witchy vibes. I read it this year and feel in love with it and read the rest of the series.
I absolutely LOVE your channel. I just found you last week. I do wish you would list all the book you have on the video in the description. I can’t always stop and write them down when I’m watching ( sometimes I’m taking a bath or listening when driving) I know this would make extra work for you but it would be wonderful to have them listed. ❤️❤️
Ok..You convinced me! I picked up "A Holiday by Gaslight" and I also joined The Book of the Month. I selected "In A Holidaze" & "These Violent Delights" for my first box.
Such great recommendations! I'm personal on Miss Marple's side as far as Agatha's detectives, just last night I finished A Murder Announced and it's going down as one of my favorite Agatha Christie books, if you haven't read that one yet, I'd recommend it!
Save Me the Plums by Ruth Reichl - Not set during winter time, but her lush and vivid writing is perfect for cozy winter days. Then for a reflective night in, Quiet by Susan Cain :)

Hello Darling Desi! I don't know if you will read me or even answer me but we haven't seen you in a while. Hope everything is ok. I miss your videos especially the ones you used to do on books. Thanks to you I discovered so many great readings. Take care x Amélie from France Normandie.
Thank you ! I'm ordering A woman in the polar night and Early Riser :), hope you'll read more sci-fi books in the futur because I would love your recommendations !
Aww yay! I hope you enjoy them!! Haha, I probably won’t be reading too much sci-fi, sorry! I used to read it more often, but I’ve just found myself in classics, mysteries and historical fiction. But my favorite sci-fi books are Skyward (Brandon Sanderson), Dune and The Martian ✨
I'm curious to know your thoughts on The Bear and the Nightangle series. If you haven't done it already. I just recently subscribed to your channel and have a lot of catching up to do lol
i read something on goodreads that you have to read the previous books to read a christmas on the island. do you agree with that or could I jump right in?
I love Agatha Christie’s novels but for the life of me, I can’t pronounce Hercule Poirot’s name! 😆 Every time I’m trying to talk about one of her stories and I need to say it, I point at my husband and he says it flawlessly! I don’t think I’ll ever get there.
Hi, I just wanted to tell you that Colgan just released one more Christmas book in the Mure series. So you don't have to leave them yet :D I believe it's called The Christmas Hotel or something like that. I haven't read it yet. And thanks for some great middlegrade recommendations!
I totally get that! I prefer to buy books from my local stores as well. Especially my local used book store. I shop there probably more than anywhere else. But I do often discover books online, and then find that my small local bookstores don’t carry them. For example, none of my local bookstores carried “A Holiday by Gaslight” and they can usually order it, but it often takes a long time to arrive, so I ordered that one on Amazon 🙈 or a lot of books that I want that are published in the UK, are also difficult to find here. So I do like having the option of Amazon ☺️
I was at the bookstore YESTERDAY going through your Goodreads recs, now I have to go back! Also wondering if you or anyone here knows any great sapphic winter/holidays books? I recently found Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur but looking for more!
Desi's taste in books is IMMACULATE **mwah** ❤❤
Literally placed two separate book orders in the middle of watching this 😂. I need books like these, this year especially.
Haha I do that ALL the time while watching other book recommendation videos 🙈 And I totally agree! I’ve needed books more than ever this year.
I love that you recommend books outside of new releases! I love finding great books that are available at my library!
Yes!
I agree! :)
aah yes the aesthetics are so beautiful! thank you for those wintery book recommendations 💕
Thank YOU for watching! 🥰 I hope you have an amazing day!!
I too love L.M. Montgomery's stories. Her books are so wholesome and enjoyable. Thanks for your great videos!
I always end up putting down so many books to buy or borrow when I watch your videos. You make them all sound so good.
Jenny colgan books are always a satisfying read.
The Book Charmer by Karen Hawkins is a book I just finished. north child reminds me a lot of "White-Bear-King-Valemon" or the "soria moria slott" mostly bacsue of the girl riding on the white bear

Amazing video! Thanks!
